@@Borderman47 The question was "Why would anyone in their right mind waste money on the BBC?" The answer is "Because they like BBC programmes" or, as you say, like other live TV.
Maybe, maybe not. It represents a serious loss of income for the BBC and the government may decide to replace the licence with a settlement out of general taxation, whereupon the BBC may feel they have the licence (pun intended) to broadcast even more political bias and generally crap entertainment content. One things for sure; no government would ever allow the BBC to show adverts in the UK. So the BBC have a "Corrections and Clarifications" web site. On this evidence, I wonder if it says Jimmy Savile never did anything wrong and he never worked for the BBC.
I've always thought the second most disgusting thing about the tv license was charging blind people half price 'to watch live broadcast tv'. Even though all they can do is listen to the programs, and even though there is NO radio license required to listen to the radio, which is what a TV is to someone who can't see.
Being "legally blind" does not mean that you can't see a thing, they can still see to a degree, just not as well as a fully sighted person. A simple Google search says "If you're legally blind, your vision is 20/200 or less in your better eye or your field of vision is less than 20 degrees. That means if an object is 200 feet away, you have to stand 20 feet from it in order to see it clearly. But a person with normal vision can stand 200 feet away and see that object perfectly.
@@brianlopez8855 I go into my local knowing the tv will be on even if there are no other customers in there. If so, it should be an offence to demand money from people who are addicted and the government should issue health warnings against the evils of tv.
There is a genuine fear amongst the elderly that just having a TV, means you need a licence and no amount of showing them the current status of the licence will draw them away from what has been indoctrinated on them, for 70+ years.
@Thurgosh that may be true for younger folk as well. This old fart knows his rights, knows the TV license is a scam and knows a good many other old farts that think the same. Fear not, we are not all brainwashed. Signed, pushing 80 😂
Well, it's still bloody wrong on the corrections site. "People who are over 75 and not in receipt of Pension Credit have to pay for a TV licence", - um, not if they don't watch/record live TV programs or use iPlayer they don't, or if they live in someone else's household who has a licence. But they don't state that part, because, as you say, they like to keep it unclear and confusing - they sell more licenses that way.
I read something on a government website which basically said the difference between misinformation and disinformation is that misinformation is as the result of a mistake, while disinformation is intentional. I would argue what they are saying here is deliberately done to confuse people, therefore I question calling it 'mis'information. And as a lawyer channel i follow keeps saying, nine tenths of the law is about proving _intent._

Matt Alwight was discussing the fact that 800000 pensioners aren't claiming pension credit,he failed to mention that over 75s claiming pension credit dont have to buy a TV licence.
That's my biggest problem with how the TV license is phrased. Sometimes its "if you have a TV", sometimes its specific types of services, sometimes its just for watching BBC. Hell, I remember looking at their OWN site that stated if you use "live services such as ... UA-cam". When you look at the Government's site it actively states that UA-cam does NOT count. My best guess here is they're talking about livestreaming from UA-cam but even then that sounds like absolute bullshit because that's users doing that not anything that the BBC might have agency over. I was almost going to give in and just get one when I saw them mention UA-cam because clearly they're overstepping their boundaries and trying to use everything as an excuse to need a license, hell I wouldn't be surprised if they said watching DVDs you bought required a license soon enough. Thankfully I don't have any sort of box attached to my TV nor any broadcasting services to my name, they can check my bills for all I care, so they have no way of proving I require it beyond some arrogant belief that anyone gives a shit enough about the BBC to watch them.
Reminds me of trying to apply for PIP.... They use weird definitions for things, vague and require reading through reams of documents to understand if you fall into a category or not. The purpose is to try and get as few people on their system as possible, or in the case of the BBC to confuse people into thinking they need to be on the system. I moved into my own flat recently, out from family. My sister was telling me I had to get a TV license, it wasn't an option. I don't watch any sort of TV, nor do I watch any sort of streaming service because there's frankly nothing good on and to my knowledge streaming services shouldn't even fall under the TV license's jurisdiction anyways. I applied for the opt-out thing and they mentioned "live services such as [...] UA-cam". That threw me off so hard because why in the god damn fuck does a video hosting site owned by an American company where almost all its content is uploaded by the users themselves fall under the BBC's control? Well Government website specifically states that UA-cam does NOT fall under it and closer looking at the phrasing makes it sound like it might potentially refer to UA-cam livestreaming? I mean that's still BS but sure, whatever... BBC overreaching as per usual. I don't believe they have any real way of checking if you need the license, my TV isn't smart so doesn't get streaming services and I have no boxes tied to it, so if they did break into my house to check they'd pretty quickly figure out I have no way of watching TV anyways.
How long is it going to be before the BBC announce That you can have a Free License if you are over the age of 75 and have both your Parents living with you, Damn it's hard enough to reach 75 with this cost of living crisis. The Licenses should be free to all OAPs its the only pleasure most of them have nowadays.
Not the BBC though .there’s no pleasure in the S### they trot out as entertainment ,and then crap they come out with on their news programmes ..F### the BBC .
As an OAP I question your definition of pleasure 😂 I’m actually eligible for a free one but wouldn’t want it if they paid me. And bear in mind there are many oaps who are extremely well off…if you do want to watch that stuff then I agree with it being means tested. The ones that will be penalised are those who are a very small amount over the pension credit criteria, they lose all the extra benefits which makes life very difficult. It should be a sliding scale imo.
I remember a tv licence man turning up at my door. He was really rude I said wait there a second I went back in the house I had a cheap black and white tv in my kitchen that didn’t work great, it was just background noise while I was cooking. Anyway I picked it up went back to the front door opened it and shouted “ here take the fking thing” and threw it on the ground. The look on his face kept me laughing for days 😂
So,they realise they have very little support,no real choice of content that people would actually want to watch en masse, send letters out that could intimidate the old and vulnerable and have grossly over paid the `big` names they have for years and think saying sorry will get people on side,,they are done for and know it unless they completely change the way they operate, there are so many choices out there now as far as providers and content go,they don`t have a hope in hell
Something else that might surprise people. You also need a TV license to watch live television that's broadcast from ANYWHERE outside of the UK. It doesn't matter what country the broadcast is from. If you're watching it in the UK whilst it's being shown live in any other country then you've gotta pay the BBC. Now if myself, Chili or anyone else said that you have to pay us to watch something we had ZERO connections to, we'd be hauled before the courts for breaking various copyright and broadcasting laws. Not the BBC though.
Then imagine sending the boys round to force people to pay to use your services even if they don't. You would be in prison for harassment, racketeering and extortion. What do they call it, rogue trading? The BBC are by definition rogue traders.
In the "antique" days when ancient valve TVs spat out spurious Radio Frequencies due to how they worked T.V. detector vans might just have worked. But today, not a chance, if a modern set was producing local radio waves like that it would not be able to be sold
@@skyline1skyline115 Possibly, but still with very slim evidence. If you think about it the old crt sets only had a tuner, they were only receivers and not transceivers. Also, consider that most people had sets even way back then. 99.9% of over 75s who watched it don't know how to get the website...... they should announce it on the program like they did in the first place and say they got it wrong
They're very crafty. I opted out years ago, but now and then they send a letter (without your name on it) which just says home owner and threaten you because you don't have a licence. I've got an email that say's I've opted out, it goes in the bin. It's just another way of them trying it on, I never reply.
Thank you for your video. I have stopped my licence as I do not watch live TV or anything from bias BBC. I sent three emails to the BBC asking for their clarification on why I should pay and each time I got an email back saying they are not responding to my email What!!! Why???
They do understand it....but like you said, the more confusion they can sow they better off they are....it doesn't take much to confuse the type of person who pays the licence because they are too scared not to.
I am currently under investigation by the BBC Goons department, the fact I don't even own a TV and have instructed them for the last 14 years via the NOTV online thing seems not to matter one jot, but I did go online recently followed their NOTV link "as written in their letter" but it now ends up at a no occupancy date screen, as they must assume my property is not occupied and that's the reason my address has no TV licence listed, so I file my letter away now in a bin.

another issue that surprises me is, when I have been out of the country for 6 months when my licence has been due for renewal, I have purchase a new 12 month licence on my return, only to receive a letter from licencing to say, they are amending my new licence so that it expires 6 months sooner to cover the 6 months that I did not have a licence whist I was out of the country, as "they are entitled to do so" !
Just phone them and explain that you did legally not require a licence for those 6 months and therefore legally, they cannot charge you for that period.
They're fully clear on the details, but it's their policy to keep the public's understanding vague. As for the free license for pensioners. That's just another betrayal, escused by a lie. As if they can't afford it, with their huge profits from commercial sales of their terrible period dramas.

As an American I find the concept of a TV license as absolutely ridiculous from a freedom standpoint. What good is free speech if your not allowed to listen to anyone without paying a TV Fee/Tax. It's beyond silly and worthy of ridicule. Isn't your BBC already payed for by your taxes? We Americans have tossed shiploads of tea into the harbor for less.
Free speech? The US is the perfect example of how democracy fails when the privileged few take control of the media. What's "absolutely ridiculous" is the ignorance of you muricans. We can listen and watch whatever we want to.
You're right, the BBC is paid for by our taxes. The intention there was to keep it free of advertisements, whereas other channels need ads to fund themselves. Not watched TV for a long time because frankly there's fuck all worth watching these days, but I seem to recall BBC channels having ads now as well. They're just greedy bastards trying to increase their revenue as much as possible. To my knowledge, they have no real means of checking if you need it, they use vague definitions to convince you to get the license or to win in court, threats to try and make you fold, and goons at your door though they rarely have an actual warrant. Lots of underhanded tactics. Shame we can't toss the BBC itself into the harbour. With all the privatized water companies now spewing waste into our seas, we might not have had to deal with the BBC anymore...
"Isn't your BBC already payed for by your taxes?" No, that's why there's a separate charge. What's silly and worthy of ridicule is how US democracy is in the state it is but hey, when private individuals own major media networks what do you expect?
the BBC likes to keep things as confusing as possible. if members of the general public are uncertain or not confident about where they stand legally, they may be less likely to ditch the licence fee. to quote a classic BBC production from a far better age, the Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy, we demand rigid areas of doubt and uncertainty.
Thanks for the interesting video! I lived in the UK from 2012 until 2018 and never paid for a TV licence. I just told them that I never watched or recorded live TV and refused access for them to check. Never heard any more from them . I now live in France where the TV licence has be abolished for all but I can access all UK with my excellent StreamLocator box connected to my ultra fast Orange fibre internet connection. France being way ahead of the UK in high speed broadband and at a much lower cost. Keep up the good work! Best wishes from Toulouse.
In France you are now paying more for National French television, than when you had a licence fee. The cost of the National French television was simply moved and added to VAT in France (VAT was increased to cover it). The TV channels still get the same amount each year but anything above that (and it's quite a large sum) goes into Macrons coffers. This is something we want to avoid over here.
@@Thurgosh_OG Unfortunately you do not understand the French tax system. TVA (VAT) has been overall at 20% with a few differences since 2014 and was not changed when the TV licence was abolished. Instead the percentage of revenue from TVA was increased in favour of the state television companies. This had no impact on the public who were paying for a licence within their Taxe d'Habitation.
If the government was funding the TV licence for the over 75s it wasn't free. The government shouldn't have used taxpayer's money to fund those over 75 licences as the BBC should've funded that in the first place.

I believe that the government came to an.agreement with the BBC concerning the free over 75s licences, the government allowed the BBC to raise the license fee at above inflation on.condition that the BBC kept the free over 75s licences. Unfortunately for the BBC so many people have stopped paying the telly tax they decided to reneague on.the agreement,to make up the financial shortfall caused by people not paying the telly tax.
No. The BBC wanted to put a no-licence-no-view restriction on all catch-up streaming services run by other broadcasters. This would have covered the likes of All4, ITV-Hub, My5, and UKTV. The independents told the BBC to take a hike, and there was nothing it could do about it. That's why the Player is the only one behind a (virtual) paywall. Parliament was unwilling to upset its commercial friends by making it a law, so it never happened and the BBC had to retreat with it tail between its legs. I think the reneging on the over-75s was a petulant revenge move.

The best things in life are free.
That's why we stopped paying for the tv license.
Had you added "fee" behind "license", you would have had a catchy little slogan. (One that I agree with, btw)
Matt Alwight was discussing the fact that 800000 pensioners aren't claiming pension credit,he failed to mention that over 75s claiming pension credit dont have to buy a TV licence.
The fact there's people that contact you to say that if you have a TV you need a license is shocking
@@cyqry You pretty much just have to ignore them and hope they don't randomly decide to get a warrant for your property
@@SGz_Eliminated Fuck it, they can check all they like. I have nothing that would give them evidence.
They deliberately make the rules difficult, I think.
yes
Not the BBC though .there’s no pleasure in the S### they trot out as entertainment ,and then crap they come out with on their news programmes ..F### the BBC .
quite so i agree
Fucking legend mate!
Trust me, you don't, in fact you just do not need one at all 🙃

I saw that, I was confused. What utter lies 😁
So they still would of had great difficulty pinpointing which household the signals were coming from throughout a long street of joined houses.
The reasons why as long ago as the early 70's the bbc were pumping out their tv licence propaganda to put the wind up those who didn't pay. All scare tactics!!!
@@Psychedelicxylophone Absolutely pinpointing the exact location of an I.F signal amid that forest of Random Radio frequencies would be nearly impossible, that's why I said "might" have worked.
Even the military in those days didn't have equipment sensitive enough to do it
Quite right just scare tactics
they used to park up on council estates just to scare people into paying
99.9% of over 75s who watched it don't know how to get the website...... they should announce it on the program like they did in the first place and say they got it wrong
They should have a brief announcement at the end of each news programme but they won't.
Why???
I too followed Chilli's excellent advice, but didn't tell them. I merely stopped the standing order. They've got the message, "it's a big number"!
They do understand it....but like you said, the more confusion they can sow they better off they are....it doesn't take much to confuse the type of person who pays the licence because they are too scared not to.
I'd like to know how they can prove you are watching live TV.
It is simple, when charged you plead guilty and you are duly found guilty as charged on your own admission
They can't.
People just admit to it so end up with a fine.
My declaration is due to expire soon so I'm looking forward to getting plenty of threatening letters. If I'm lucky I might get threatened in person!
@@bernardm2312 I would not hold your breath for one that one happening, I have had lots of letters with dates they are going to call and never turn up.

Age 75, haha, who wants to wait that long? I ditched the BBC, tv sets, and their licence fee at age 55, and never looked back. Don't want it, don't miss I!
another issue that surprises me is, when I have been out of the country for 6 months when my licence has been due for renewal, I have purchase a new 12 month licence on my return, only to receive a letter from licencing to say, they are amending my new licence so that it expires 6 months sooner to cover the 6 months that I did not have a licence whist I was out of the country, as "they are entitled to do so" !
Just stop paying them and they will eventually get the message.
My mother is 90 and she is forced to pay for a TV licence because she can't get the pension credit because she has looked after her money. Having worked all of her working life and as a result has paid her mortgage off hence NO PENSION CREDIT. Disgusting.....
I posted on a few videos about this, I recently turned 75 so applied but was asked if I was on Pension Credit, I said no so had to pay, I didn't go any further I gave my TV to my daughter.
I got rid of Netflix as well, I now use a VPN and watch streaming channels abroad for free.
I'm 75 in two weeks time, I'm also on pension credits! I don't watch TV, BUT once I'm 75 I can legally watch TV. I'm tempted to then(when I'm 75) to start watching live TV and then hope that I get a visit and get prosecuted. I will of course plead NOT GUILTY and say "but I'm over 75 your Honour and I'm on pension credits so I thought that at last I could watch TV". I would probably get found guilty but only get a slap on the wrist and I would of course get the local newspapers involved to highlight the total injustice of the BBC TV licence scam. What do you think?🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔😎😎
I have not had a TV for a long time but keep getting letters asking me to get a licence, i have stopped phoning them to tell them i no longer need a licence because why should i pay for the phone call!! I have now received a letter saying "investigation opened " ,what should I do? Ignore as usual?
Oi, mayte - u go' a loysence fer that opinion?
"Isn't your BBC already payed for by your taxes?" No, that's why there's a separate charge. What's silly and worthy of ridicule is how US democracy is in the state it is but hey, when private individuals own major media networks what do you expect?
the BBC likes to keep things as confusing as possible. if members of the general public are uncertain or not confident about where they stand legally, they may be less likely to ditch the licence fee. to quote a classic BBC production from a far better age, the Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy, we demand rigid areas of doubt and uncertainty.
The BBC's event horizon beckons. As Hig Hurtenflurst might have said, "I've decided to like them; I'd like them on my wall!".
Why do people just not pay, I sure don't, its so easy I am 78 and NEVER had a T V licence,,
BBC.... BIGGEST BRITISH CON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have not paid the licence for 3 years now and I don't miss it one little bit
£159 a year to the BBC (that's one troy ounce of gold in ten years). Not happening.
If the government was funding the TV licence for the over 75s it wasn't free. The government shouldn't have used taxpayer's money to fund those over 75 licences as the BBC should've funded that in the first place.
But the bias bullshitting cult is the state propaganda tool..
The BBC are Laughable ... to think years ago they were revered as the best in the business! I think its sad, just really sad how bad they have gone.
I agree. My take on it is that from top to bottom it got infiltrated and in the last 20yrs it has become the haven for what we call today, 'woke folk', so no confusion as to the cause of it's decline. But I get satisfaction from not paying their wages.
So let me get this straight,if you live with your parents and your over 75 you don't need a license, god bless the BBC...

@@byteme9718 The 'license fee model' does NOT allow you not to pay, not watching live TV and catch up etc allows you NOT to pay otherwise you are breaking the law, when we reach the point where enough people are not paying [which we are approaching] they will choose another option, possibly through advertising or as you say some sort of taxation, you do have to factor in though that BBC viewing numbers are greatly in decline, not just because the BBC has become so disliked but because of online streaming and Netflix etc etc etc etc, we may well see the BBC become self funding.

Gary linekers pay not license fee
I thought the BBC were allowed to include iPlayer in the licencing fee in exchange for free licence for over 75s.
And they'll be using your money to repair a peedo/dog botherer's statue.

Of course they know the exact rules but they deliberately make jt confusing so that people think that they MIGHT need a TV license so they get one anyway just so they don't fall foul of the law
This. I moved into my own flat recently after living with family and saw that the opt-out thing mentions you still need a license for using a live service like UA-cam.
UA-cam is a video hosting site, most people don't touch the "live" aspect of it. Also its owned by an American company and almost all of its content is user-created. BBC would have no jurisdiction over it whatsoever. But I very nearly folded and just got the license because of that.
Then I realised my TV isn't smart so I can't use live services on it and I don't have any TV box nor would any services be tied to my flat except for broadband (to which my contract states its ONLY broadband, no phone or TV) so if they did try to force their way into my home they'd find no evidence whatsoever to justify their actions.
