The good thing about radios like this, I hope, is that they push the bigger/Japanese manufactures to innovate, make HTs more affordable and adopt standards like USB-C. Thanks for the good review and test, Ape!
I agree. What’s surprising is that they can cram in the features but that can’t produce a clean signal 😳
Thanks for reviewing the TalkPOS.
Lol, thanks Randall 👍
Another great spectral purity test session. There seems to be a common thread with the low-cost HT's.
Hey SF. There are some that pass just fine but they are few and far between 👍
Excellent video! The one I tested is also a mess on 2m. But, unlike the TD-H8 at least I don't get an RF burn from the battery terminals.
Lol, right
Come on, Talkpod A36 Plus is 5W, how can you be burned by RF
Awesome Video Ape!! It's all just as I suspected, and the thing feels like it came from a box of Crunch Berries!
Thanks Freddie. I’m surprised that it’s even on the market considering all the issues.
My sister gifted me a Yaesu scanner years ago when she worked at an airline and just this year i got into ham radio (already got a license in my country) and i wanted to be able to transmit and talk to the other hams around, and this one is really catching my attention
I’m not trying to tell anyone what to do but this is one of the worst radios I’ve used. Look good on paper but it’s a terrible performer.
@@TheSmokinApe Here where I live they're about the same price as a UV-5R ($35-40) so it does make sense for that price point. I have an old Standard/Yaesu scanner as I mentioned before but I wanted to see what I could get in the double digits...any suggestion in the $100-200 range instead?
I'd look at the Yaesu FT70 or the 65.
That thing has more birds than the San Diego Zoo aviary. Great Video Ape!
It sure does, thanks for watching Jeff 👍
Talkpod contacted me actually yesterday to say they have a "Mk2" coming out to fix the issues in version 1. It will be interesting to see what changes are made.
Who they think they is TIDRadio?
@@TheSmokinApe To be fair, they probably are!
Ha Ape, I can see when you don't post a link to the radio under review, that the radio is "no bueno" LOL! Keep up the good work! K7KS
Right, thanks for checking it out Alan 👍
Thanks for clear method on setup. Curious how a direct comparison with something like an IC-V86 (i.o.w. from a company that has historically met our US/FCC regulations) would look for clear visual of what it should look like.
Thanks Brian, glad you liked it. Here is a link to a playlist of many radios I tested: ua-cam.com/play/PLm8ROkpFeqoqldSr14SvcqPd-LXXC4bkR.html
Talkpod and TID...a race to the bottom! I was hoping you would check this one out.
There's more coming 😳
Awesome video! I want to buy Baofeng F8HP recently, can you test it?
I don't currently have one but if I do get my hands on one I will test it.
Hello Ape. Anything new on the Libre VNA?
Does the software also work on 32-bit Windows 8.1?
Many greetings.
Hey Karl, I haven’t played with it too much but maybe I can break it out. I haven’t tried on win8 and don’t have a win8 machine to test in, sorry man
@@TheSmokinApe Thank you Ape for your answer and effort. I tried loading the Libre-PC program with my 32bit win8.1 to see if my machine is suitable for this VNA, but it didn't work. So I assumed that 64bit and a newer win version is necessary. Wish you a nice weekend.
Hmmm. It would be interesting to see it's performance on GMRS channels, since it looks better at about 30 MHz lower. Other than the spurious emissions, think of all the output power that doesn't end up on the fundamental...2 Watts, maybe.
I might do some more tests but don’t want to spend much time on radios like this. For some reason people tend to get upset when you actually show the performance of this cheaper radios. I agree, that power output is likely degraded 👍
Looking at 2M..I wonder if there is ANY Low pass filtering.. The 70cm band doesn't look to far behind. Is there any testing at the factory, I wonder?
I can’t see how it would have any filtering 😮
Hey, can you test the baofeng f8hp?
I will if I can get my hands on one 👍
Apparently the new iterations of this radio have fixed the spurious emissions. Have you tried the newer ones?
I have not
I’m glad I held off buying this radio thanks SmokinApe
Hey Ross, it’s got some other problems as well. Stay tuned!
@@TheSmokinApe ok SmokinApe I’ll be looking forward to more videos on this radio
@@Ross13ful 👍
@@TheSmokinApeI bet your brain has a few problems also.
I’m bummed, because I like this radio and I wanted to see the new “Plus” model do better than the last one.
It’s a same it was released in this condition 👍
Whacky!
At best
About as I expected honestly, a name I'd not heard of with a cheap price and some pretty neat fluff hardware features. I mean, I have one of course 😂 but certainly great information and great content, thanks ape!
Hey Spivey, it’s pretty much what I expected as well 👍
Look up how attenuators work mathematically in series.
I'm beginning to see a pattern here with the non-big three radios.....keep telling the truth Ape, and you won't need to worry about people getting upset about you reviewing freebies. Other than the manufacturers, that is. 😉
Lol right
No surprise
Right. Thanks for watching GJ 👍
I think affordable ham radios are great and help more folks participate in the hobby. I think dirty radios at any price should not be available for purchase and use. Thanks for making a video like this to help folks make an informed buying decision.
Thanks Edward, totally agree 👍
Plus, with that green color it would be hard to find on a Hi VIZ vest. Blend right in
Right
Where the flip is the FCC? Far too much garbage being sold to hams lately. Thank you Ape for testing and sharing your findings. 73
It does make you wonder, thanks for watching Hollywood 👍
Using a cheap Chinese spectrum analyser to test a cheap Chinese radio.
Right, the SA is the problem 👍
Lol, what filters.... 😀
Exactly
So basically you can manufacture AND SELL a radio that craps all over the place but it's on the operator to determine whether it is or is not clean and take that into consideration to determine the product's legality before actually using it? Yes, that was a rhetorical question that most of us know the answer to. But seriously, what a bunch of bull hockey. Freakin horse hockey too.
The FCC is just about worthless. I can't believe WE pay THEM.
Hey Norrin, it does seem like BS to me 👍
It should be called the Filthpod.😮
Something like that…
