    I knew Mark Halfkenny. I didn't know his older brother George very well and I didn't know Billy at all. Mark was one year younger than I, he was 12 and I was 13, was but we still hung out in the summers a fair bit. Needless to say this shocked the hell out of everyone in the region. To this very day, 45 years later, it crosses my mind very often, especially when I venture into Algonquin Park where it happened. In 2015 I visited the site where I believe the attack occurred. Algonquin Park is known for its wildlife and wilderness and I venture there a few times a year for some backcountry camping. It's so peaceful and tranquil.... buts there's always this memory in the back of my mind.
    In 1991 while canoeing I stopped for a break on Bates Island in Lake Opeongo. A few months later in October, there was another fatal attack in the same park which killed two people on that very island. Creeps me out every time I go by that island now.
    As a side-note, you have the ages of Mark and George mixed up. Mark was the younger one at 12 yrs and George was 16.

      @@kimfitzgerald8225yes 3days from what I remember. We lived in petawawa and my dad was one of the many searchers from our base where the boys lived. I was 8yrs old when the horrific attack happened and has always given me a knowledgeable fear of what a bear can do. I recall my father finally coming back home crying and squeezing us kids for a long time

    One of the crazy parts of this story is that none of the boys knew what was attacking them they were all killed out of view of each other

    This was not the Only attack at this park.

    It's such a shame about those 3 kiddos. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially near bodies of water. That goes double if there are kids involved, even more so if there are known predators in the area.

    Being attacked by a starving animal seems more horrific bc they are desperate and hungry so they are less likely to be scared off and more determined to make the kill.

    Why were they out there knowing that it's bear 🐻🐨 country without any weapons. Where were their parents. This mauling could have been prevented. I can't understand why when they should not have been there. The parents were in my opinion should be held accountable for their actions.

      I thought black bears didn't normally attack humans. And why would it be starving?

    • @Roymac01
      @Roymac01 Рік тому

      They were fishing in a Provincial Park. No Firearms allowed. Also it's in Canada where laws are different and not everybody and their dog is packing a weapon. Young kids carrying firearms are more apt to shoot themselves or someone else accidentally while patiently waiting for an unexpected bear attack. Also the odds of a bear attack are extremely slim. Odds of running into a psycho human are much greater. As for the parents....both families are military families. Billy's father was away on a 6 month tour in the Middle East and George and Mark's father was on military exercise down in Texas I believe.

    What kind of parents would allow 16 yr old boys into the wilderness alone??? I just don’t get it? My brother would have NEVER been allowed into the wild. He could fish on the dock or in the boat. Period! Our family cabin is in Northern MN the wilderness. This is shocking behavior from a Black Bear! Shocking!
    This telling is completely full of innuendo and speculation as to what the boys went through!
    Words to the wise! Keep your teenagers in sight!

    • @mbmochinski
      @mbmochinski Рік тому +1

      That bear must have been ill or rabid or something because black bears don't usually attack humans, I think. And why was it starving? That seems weird. I wonder if they did an autopsy on it?

    • @gxbrielwatches4088
      @gxbrielwatches4088 Рік тому

      This is a tragedy, an incredibly rare one tho, keeping your TEENAGERS always in sight will either make them useless adults who can't do anything for themselves or once they hit college and have their first bit of freedom, they will do things you couldn't even imagine all while thinking their your sweet baby's.
      Giving kids and teenagers independence and freedom is an incredibly necessary part of a child and young adults growth. Not to take away from this tragedy but it didn't matter if they were 16 year olds or fully grown athletic 30 year old men, you aren't doing anything against a starving black bear. It was starving they found a porcupine in the bears stomach after. ( Not something they eat unless very very desperate )

      @@mbmochinskiblack bear attacks are rare yeah, because they generally don’t see humans as potential prey and because they’re not as strong as brown bears and can often climb to escape, they may be less aggressive with cub defense. still, it happens sometimes. if you want to learn more i recommend the podcast tooth and claw talks about animal attacks, analyzing them and providing education about how to handle encounters and about the animals in general.

    What a Tragic Situation.....
    Where was one of the Dad's..??
    Black Bears have Killed More people than any other Bear. Mainly because people don't take them Seriously. This wasn't the Case here....
    Here's a Tip....have a couple of Real Dogs with you like German Imports. Most people over Estimate their dogs, Mainly for Alertness, Fluffy or a Mutt is Not going to give you an Alert like one of these dogs. ADRK Rottweilers or German Shepherds are the Breeds of the Pro's.
    This could have been avoided with a Couple of Dad's, Bear Spray, a Couple of Quality Dogs, and a couple of Firearms. I have done K9 Training with Metro and do Schutzhund Training. The Schutzhund Dogs will make the Police Dogs look Silly.
