I don’t know if you read the comments “long” after you have recorded these sessions. However, I want to let you know that I appreciate the historical and technical information relating to pigments. I am just getting started with watercolors, and being a somewhat technical and analytical person, this information series is very helpful when understanding color combinations and properties.... Thanks again...
Since beginning my watercolor journey a month back, I have been watching your videos nonstop! Thank you for everything you do to help us watercolor beginners. I have struggled with color theory in the past, but since starting watercolor and watching your videos I have felt more confident and have gained so much more knowledge. ❤️❤️
I did some research on this pigment. Apparently it'll make great skin tones when mixed with cool reds. Since I mainly do anime portraits with watercolor, this'll be useful to have. Thank you for making this video.
I just discovered your channel. Thanks for all the work you do with colour charts. Also i love to see you painting I own mostly Daniel Smith with a few other brands but really love the DS the best
I dont know where the poll is, but I just got my first real, lol set of water colors, a Van Gogh 18+2 tube box, and the most goregeous blood red I have ever seen is in it. It is Madder Lake. Please teach us more about this stunning color? My first thing to do was a background flow of Perm Red, Madder Lake, and Yellow Mid,(or something like that, the yellow...It came out so beutiful, even glossy in places with slight granulation from the Madder and the yellow/orange. Thanks, I love this series!
Denise your always so informative and a joy to watch and listen to. I was surprised that DaVinci was not represented until I saw the date of the video! Thank you for continuing to have these video's up as a resource for your viewers. Oh good luck on the move, Ca will be losing a great Artist to Az!
InLiquidColor yes, because both are strong colors, I think it should be interesting 😉 looking forward to the next color spotlight series from you! hope you have a great day 😊
Funny, I bought a tube of the M. Graham Quin Gold just a couple weeks ago, but haven't played with it much yet. I can't seem to understand a color until I see what it mixes with, and with the kind of snow we're getting up here in far northern California, I haven't had time to paint yet alone mix. (Shovel, shovel, shovel... repeat). Great series!
i love this. I am hoping to order the single pigment version before they run out! I toook the survey! thank you for the video today i badly needed this today!
I'm sorry if I'm wrong (I listened 3 times), but I think you said W&N's 3 pigment version of Quinacridone Gold is made with *PR206, PV19 and PY50* but the last one is *PY150* in mine. I love your video's and keep returning to them several times. I think it might be that I don't only learn a lot from them, but I also just like watch you do stuff and listen to you.
Angela Fehr has used a couple of colors that were quite awesome and she usually uses D. Smith's brand: I'd like to see perylene orange (or translucent orange?); cobalt turquoise; and perylene maroon.
I didn't know Daniel Smith still had the original quin gold in the 15ml tubes. Must get before it's gone -- thanks for that info! :) The quin burnt orange looks great too. Did you make the beginning slate with the splashes of watercolor? Beautiful.
In which way is the w+n quin gold different? I'm trying to decide between the w+n one and the sennelier one! But don't have much to go by! Love this series, its so helpful and informative, thank you so much!
oh no i just purchased the DS 5ml online not knowing it wasnt PO49 :( do they really say to replace sienna and ochre with it? to me it looks more like a dark indian yellow. beautiful colour. Ive just discovered this series.
Aw I'm sorry! It'll still be lovely, just different. I've heard a lot of people often use one or the other, particularly on limited palettes, but I definitely use them for different things :)
Denise, is there a method you use when creating the swatches, as you work form right to left? I wonder how sometimes there's a very light mix next to a dark one. I love your videos and watching you paint. Very lovely owl.
I'm usually pretty meticulous for these kinds of things but I've taken a much looser approach for these videos. I take our main color then add little puddle of the other color next to it then mix them back and forth trying to get as many as I can. And of course, for the lighter ones, they're watered down versions, usually of the color next to them. Thanks for watching!
How do you make your color mixing swatches. I usually start with the light color and add bits of the darker to get graduated color combinations. You seem to get so many more variations than I do and I'd love to know your technique.
Hi Leah! I'm usually pretty meticulous for these kinds of things but I've taken a much looser approach for this video. I take our main color then add little puddle of the other color next to it then mix them back and forth trying to get as many as I can. I never used the old, supposedly superior Q. Gold, so I don’t miss it. However, I have the new version in both tube and pan form - and I see a difference between them. My tube one is duller, more sienna like, whereas the pan one is a more glowy and vivid gold. I wonder if anyone else has this issue?
I’m so lost when you do the swatches! You get so many colors in one row. How do you get so many colors? Do you do different ratios? Are you using all the different versions of the same color.
Can you do a quickie explanation (in a future video) as to what all those PO & PY numbers mean? (Jesus, I pray it's not too complicated either...or I may pass out like a High-Schooler. lol 😳 😬
Hi Sylvia! PY stands for "pigment yellow" so it belongs to the yellow color family. PO would be the orange color family and so on. I'm not sure who decides the numeric portion, but its a label for a given pigment. "PY3" is hansa yellow/lemon yellow. It serves as a universal identifier for when brands use differing common names :) Hope that helps?
Perhaps I misunderstood you, but are you saying (about the sample mixes) that with each swipe of your paint brush you are mixing only 2 colors together and yet can get 19+/- different colors?
So i ordered 2 15ml tubes of DS. OMG... the most beautiful color. I'm afraid it will run out so I'm ordering 2 more! lol Also purchased a 7ml tube of WN, which is also very beautiful, but cost the same as a 15ml tube of the DS :(
I'm not sure I understand your mixing color chart. For example, the first line you say if Quin Gold mixed with Phthalo Blue shows 20 different examples of color; did you get all of those colors just by mixing the 2 colors?
HI Bev, yes, it's just the two colors. I made a separate video showing how I do these mixes, per viewer request. Its called Mixing Two-Color Graded Swatches ua-cam.com/video/NSwOiNecUH4/v-deo.html
Denise, I will put my schmincke quingold and white nights quingold online... if you want a swatch you can touch by hand and judge in person from those, just say the word, I can mail them to you incl pigment and lightfast info. These are budget friendly artist paints in the eu,so you can compare for your eu viewers.
I will mail them this week and just because I know you have a thing with paper quality I will put them on arches cold press. keep in mind that the current shopping frenzy can slow the mail down :) if you are in luck there may be a chance i accidently order my quingold double.. depending on that mailing might be later 😇 i was suprised to see eve her schmincke swatch compared to the classic ds one, they look quite similar, wich I didn't expect,I thought the schmincke one would be lighter and less pigmented. ps, i copied the po box mailing adress. will you remove it, you almost gave me a heartattack.

What a nice presentation. Thank you.

Should add that I really appreciate you doing this series!
Thanks so much Bev!

Hi Denise! Thanks for all your colour and palette review videos; they help me a lot :)
I have Sennelier Quin Gold that I love and use a lot. It is PR101, PY150, PR206.
Excellent series! I appreciate all the work you put into this
Cuddlebloom thanks so much :)
Denise your always so informative and a joy to watch and listen to. I was surprised that DaVinci was not represented until I saw the date of the video! Thank you for continuing to have these video's up as a resource for your viewers. Oh good luck on the move, Ca will be losing a great Artist to Az!
Beautiful painting and I love the color spotlight series!! I suggest Vermillion or Indigo 😉🤗
Elga, thank you so much! I thought about indigo!
InLiquidColor yes, because both are strong colors, I think it should be interesting 😉 looking forward to the next color spotlight series from you! hope you have a great day 😊
Nice colour. I have both PO48 and PY150 (as well as PY154 and PY110). I will have to try some mixes with these.
I use quin gold quite a bit. I think I'll get another tube as daniel smith is changing the formula, which I didn't know. Thanks for the info.
oooh! your colour mixes are beautiful! (haven't finished the video yet, but had to comment!)

Thanks Tom - stay warm in all the snow! We're getting a much needed pelting of rain here in the Bay Area :)
i love this. I am hoping to order the single pigment version before they run out! I toook the survey! thank you for the video today i badly needed this today!
I bought up a couple of tubes my self a little while back, haha. Thanks for watching and voting! HUGS for today :)
Beautiful painting! I love all Quin Golds, it's such a nice shade :)
Thanks Eve!
I already filled out the survey but forgot to note that I'd like to see you do indigo. Thanks.
Thanks Sharon!
Beautiful owl!
Thank you! I actually ended up replanting it so I have an even better version as prints available now :)
I'm sorry if I'm wrong (I listened 3 times), but I think you said W&N's 3 pigment version of Quinacridone Gold is made with *PR206, PV19 and PY50* but the last one is *PY150* in mine.

You're right, I did misspeak. I'm glad you enjoy the content!
Angela Fehr has used a couple of colors that were quite awesome and she usually uses D. Smith's brand: I'd like to see perylene orange (or translucent orange?); cobalt turquoise; and perylene maroon.
Oh no! I'm sorry, I don't really have any of those colors :( One colbalt teal but not enough to do comparisons, and none of the other two.
I didn't know Daniel Smith still had the original quin gold in the 15ml tubes. Must get before it's gone -- thanks for that info! :) The quin burnt orange looks great too. Did you make the beginning slate with the splashes of watercolor? Beautiful.
Evangeline Poe happy to share the information! The slide with "Color Spotlight" on it? Yes I made that for the series :) thanks!
I bought 4 (too many - lol) colours in that hue range. QOR PO71, WN PR101 burnt sienna, MG PO48, and MG PBr7 burnt umber.
Stephen Turner do you know Daniel smiths quinacridone gold does no longer exist?
Love these single pigment looks. Suggest perylene maroon or cerulean blue.
Oh no! I'm sorry, I don't really have either of those colors :( One cerulean but no perylene maroon, though it is a gorgeous color!
In which way is the w+n quin gold different? I'm trying to decide between the w+n one and the sennelier one! But don't have much to go by! Love this series, its so helpful and informative, thank you so much!
Oh and is this a granulating colour? I read conflicting info online.
oh no i just purchased the DS 5ml online not knowing it wasnt PO49 :( do they really say to replace sienna and ochre with it? to me it looks more like a dark indian yellow. beautiful colour. Ive just discovered this series.

I think i found a perfect mix for quin gold, did anyone try titan red po36 and indian yellow py150 from white nights?
Try mixing Indian Yellow (PY150) and English Red (PR101) from White Nights.
I’m so lost when you do the swatches! You get so many colors in one row. How do you get so many colors? Do you do different ratios? Are you using all the different versions of the same color.

excellent i love quin gold i suggest green gold
I have one tube of this and bought it because I thought I'd use it. Sadly I never do though and finally took it out of my palette :( Any suggestions?
green gold burnt ochre
Perhaps I misunderstood you, but are you saying (about the sample mixes) that with each swipe of your paint brush you are mixing only 2 colors together and yet can get 19+/- different colors?
Bev Roberts yep! I have another video showing how I do these specific two colored mixes since so many people asked.
Don't mind me; it looks like I asked you that question before (boy do I feel dumb!)! What is the name of the other video?
ua-cam.com/video/NSwOiNecUH4/v-deo.html

Thanks, Ill take a look at that. In the meantime I think it is amazing to get so many colors by mixing just 2!
Isn't it great? :)
What about the Golden Qor Quinacridone Gold??
As with all my videos, I can only show what I own. Sadly, I don't know all the colors ;)
Denise, I will put my schmincke quingold and white nights quingold online... if you want a swatch you can touch by hand and judge in person from those, just say the word, I can mail them to you incl pigment and lightfast info. That's so kind of you! I'd love to see them. My mailing address is PO Box 5055 / San Jose, CA 95150 / United States :)

Which brand of Quinacridone Gold did you use when mixing the colors?
I wish I could see how you are mixing these then it would make more sense to me lol
I have a video on how I mix two colors together :) ua-cam.com/video/NSwOiNecUH4/v-deo.html
The audio keeps fading in and out.
