I am a retired nurse and retired civil attorney. I have been called for jury duty several times but never picked. I would have liked to be on a jury for the experience. I was once called for a criminal case on a case that I was handling a civil claim.

I got picked for jury duty, but was late because there was no parking ANYWHERE except paid street parking, which was also crowded, and I had to walk several blocks to try to find a nondescript building amongst other nondescript buildings with absolutely no sign or lettering save the small sign on the front entrance. I told the woman at the desk that if they want people to show, why do they make it so hard to get there? She shook her head and said "I know, I hear that all the time".

Blame America for car centric Infrastructure. I personally think we should be transitioning to walkable and bike-friendly cities and people SHOULD be paying for parking so that you can incentive walking and biking more. But in cities that you literally have to have a car to get anywhere, it just fu##s the working class for no reason.

@@Monke1312_ I do blame it, and I wish that city's development wasn't planned out by a toddler and a monkey using crayons. Making cities reliant on cars, and with no functional public transport, is a bane of the USA. But also, it would have helped this particular situation if the court just implemented their own parking garage or visitor lot, and at least put a large sign out by the street where people could actually see it. Of both types of problems, it's another scenario in life where stupidly obvious design flaws cause so many problems, and no one with the ability to is ever going to care to fix them.

The one and only time I got called up for jury duty, I was dismissed because the attending EMT was my best friends mom, went to high school with the first officer on scene, the case detective was a coworkers husband, and the DAs paralegal was my ex. When I got up to the mic, I asked the judge how I should order them...chronologically, proximity... He said "let's go with chronologically." After 5, he stopped me and said "have you ever committed a crime yourself?" "Outside of minor traffic violations and one traumatic but accidental shoplifting incident when I was 6, no." "Well, you don't seem to cause trouble, but you sure do attract it. Would either of the sides like to strike this juror?" Both said strike at the same time. "Thank you, ma'am, you can leave."

I've been selected for jury duty 9 times total. Never picked.
Now i spend about 90% of my time testifying in court in criminal neglect cases against people who include colleagues (i take medical malpractice and neglect very seriously)
Think the shittiest case i had to testify for, was a retired DA and his wife, charged with criminal child abuse. I did the autopsy on the toddler they were supposed to be fostering.
their lawyer argued that the kid got into something while they were distracted.
the child had about 2.5qts of chemical cleaner in her stomach and intestines. No way that kid drank that much, without 'help'.

I assure you that if the judge’s spouse had been on the jury, any verdict would have been tossed on appeal. If I were that judge, I would have recused myself, if it wasn’t too late in the process to do so - even the appearance of impropriety, even if somewhat accidental or inadvertent, is a violation of judicial ethics rules.
Edit: I realize that Mike doesn’t do criminal juries; in civil juries, unanimity is not required because there’s no deprivation of civil rights if a civil jury finds for the other side. Now, a CRIMINAL case guilty verdict should be reversed on appeal (and probably the judge disciplined) if the judge’s spouse were seated on a criminal jury.

Generally, jurors aren’t “picked” to be on the jury; they’re just the remaining folks who weren’t excluded and have the lowest juror number. It may sound like semantics, but it’s a little different.
It doesn’t work exactly the same everywhere, but I clerked for a judge and we had a bunch of jury trials, so I can say how we did it.
Potential jurors each had a number (1, 2, 3, etc.). After voir dire, the lawyers can “challenge” certain jurors to have them excluded. Usually, the judge start with any challenges “for cause” as there’s a reason they can’t be on the jury (they have a demonstrated bias or something). There’s no limit on how many jurors can be excluded “for cause,” but it was up to the judge. He or she could deny the strike if he/she didn’t agree. Then each side has a very limited number of strikes they can use on any potential juror for any reason that isn’t illegal (eg, race). In our case, we started in order with juror #1 (or whoever is lowest after the cause exclusions). And they’d go through one by one “anyone want to exclude this juror?” Once all exclusions were used or they’d gone through enough people to make a jury, it was done. The lowest numbered 12 people left were on the jury, maybe an extra 2-4 alternates if it’s a big criminal trial, and everyone else is sent home.
The jurors didn’t know what order we had them in (so alternates also didn’t know they were alternates). But whoever was the highest number very likely wasn’t going to be on the jury no matter how much anyone wanted him/her to be, unless there were enough “for cause” exclusions.
Edit for some clarifications: the striking of jurors was done up at the bench with everyone speaking very low so jurors couldn’t hear. We also had music playing. In civil cases, you didn’t need alternates because you could have a verdict with fewer than 12 jurors. But for criminal cases, if you lost a juror for some reason, you’d have a mistrial without an alternate. If you go through the whole trial without losing anyone, then the alternates are told they can go home and only the 12 main jurors deliberate. We had a huge capital case when I clerked and we had 4 alternates. We had to dismiss a juror during the trial, so it was a good thing we alternates. The dismissal was because she kept falling asleep. Normally, that would get her in trouble, so I don’t recommend that as a way to get out of jury duty. But she was spending all night in the hospital with a sick family member. Had she disclosed that during voir dire, she would’ve been excused. So the judge let her out of it without any punishment.

The trial was for some felony intent to distribute illicit narcotics or something. Eventually they asked me if there was anything urgent that would prevent me from showing up to future hearings and I said something like "Well I am a student at [the local college] and next week is exam week." The judge and both sets of lawyers just looked at me, then at each, then looked at me again, and then basically told me off for not bringing it up sooner. I was the youngest person in the room by at least 15 years I don't know how none of them realized. Back in the late 80s I was a young deputy county attorney who was actually picked to be a juror in a federal drug case! I knew both attorneys. The AUSA was actually a law school classmate! He chose me because I was a prosecutor; the defense attorney chose me because he thought I was fair. I and my fellow jurors acquitted the defendant. Of course, I never got a job with the U.S. Attorney after that!

    "Who are they?"
That was a lesson I learned a long time ago and find it no surprise a lawyer would question it and a teacher would use it.
Who are they is a non-specific cop-out actual data is not available or does not support the argument.
Always be specific and use specific data to support the premise.

What do you suggest I say to actually get ON jury duty? I want to be a juror so bad! I love hearing good arguments on both sides and weighing the evidence presented.

Um. Wait. The Judge in your case, his Wife gets selected for Juror Duty on that same case?? Ok. That's pretty clear Conflict of interest. Either the Judge Recluses himself - should his Wife serve as Juror, or Wife of Judge is disqualified from serving in a Case being presided over by her Judge Husband.

It is possible for a lawyer on the case to be called in for jury duty on that case? I would assume that he would never be picked to be on the jury but in theory if there is no checks but just a random lottery for those who are called in initially, there is a chance that a lawyer gets called in to serve jury duty when it's his own case..

I am a former prosecutor and current hearing officer. I've had a few attorneys on juries. A colleague of mine had a current judge on a jury. I also had a County Commissioner on a jury. All those verdicts were guilty. I've also had a former DUI defendant as the juror foreperson in a DUI trial, and the verdict was guilty. I also once had a biker on a DUI jury. Guilty verdict.

If you had the person who's the state judge's spouse on your jury, you wouldn't have to worry about them talking to their spouse about the trial at home- because their spouse is very aware of all the rules. So there's that...

I was once an alternate on a jury that also had a police officer in the jury. It was a criminal case, which according to the judge after the fact, was exceedingly rare. However, this case was very unusual because the defendant actually videoed himself committing the crime!
