As someone who worked in the Flavor and Fragrance industry under a Master Perfumer, the ingredient cost matters very little because the manufacturers who will make the colognes based in the recipes by the raw ingredientsin such bulk they can get it for lower prices than regular consumers. Here is the process these colognes will go through.
    1. New Fragrance Planning
    2. R&D
    3. Product Marketing Planning, includes bottle, logo, packaging design
    4. Cost Analysis
    5. Outsourcing Fragrance manufacturing
    6. Outsourcing Bottle manufacturing
    7. Outsourcing packaging manufacturing
    8. Licensing and Trademarking
    9. Bottling and Final Packaging
    10. Global Marketing, commercials and ads
    11. Distribution to Store shelves for retail purchase.
There are of course other steps in there and these aren't the exact order it will go through. But most fragrances are made in 25 lbs or 11 kg drums at Fragrance manufacturers like Gividuan, IFF, Symrise, Cosmo International to name a few.
It really is a interesting industry.

I was lucky to obtain a few large high end fragrance tester bottle remanants from a department store for free.
I compared a couple to what was offered for sale.
    No difference at all.
I still use them once in a while.
I also have some Givenchy that is no longer made.
    Used sparingly for special occasions.
Older women who were children in the 70s and 80s seem to have an affinity for run of the mill like Old Spice, Polo, Drakkar Noir and Brut.
Probably because their Dad used it.

Great video Antonio. I've been buying fragrances from Phoenix Shaving and he makes a lot of good stuff the old fashioned way and it's very reasonable. He makes a lot of bay rums and re invents classics with essential oils, specific aging and such. It's also great marketing and stories to go with the products.

If you put away all those factors, you are left with a very cheap liquid. And I when I say cheap, I mean a ridiculous low price.
(Unless you are buying from an artist/artisan which are not so many and that still uses some rarities in their compositions.
So bottom line is that we are paying for glass, boxes and a nice story.
Nice video sir and very nice to show different scents...love the dynamic vibe.

while you are correct, as mentioned in this video, the person who formulates the exact smells we enjoy are also very well compensated and if its a niche smell where they arent producing a lot, that paycheck has to be distributed between each of the bottles

My recommendation when I'm not buying something for it's exclusivity or popularity and I'm really not (unfortunately) endorsed by them it's the "Cuba" brand.
It's made by Parfums Des Champs from France.
Not very common in my country so I buy it online, use myself and get lots of compliments on the different types plus their Cigar packaging makes them excellent gifts for friends.
My strongest recommend scents are Cuba Royal and Cuba Miami.

Plus niche labels aren't making a profit from other goods, so with all the other additional costs involved forces the price to go up. If that fragrance goes bust after reviewing sales charts from month to month then it's discontinued. So a lot of pressure to get it right. I've had to scratch some of my creations, some I've reformulated some I've just abonaded since they all need to reach a standard in every way prior to selling especially if it's going to exceed a hundred dollars or more, most brands don't want to do this but unfortunately have too.

Because of marketing, it’s like with ad agency’s. The only customer value is the price the you set. Expensive packaging of course helps the experienced value. Look at the drywall firm Schwarzenegger owned. First he was cheap and didn’t get any jobs, then he charged the most, and got more work then they could handle.

I love how prominently you are holding Creed fragrances at the beginning. I saw a breakdown of the bottle and sprayer that came up to about $3 for box and bottle because they are such low quality. I like my Royal Oud, but their only cost is marketing. There may not be a more over-hyped brand.
I grudgingly admit that Maui Jims are great sunglasses even though they are crazy expensive.

I would have liked to see more info regarding the cost of using natural vs. synthetic ingredients. I read somewhere that 85% of a fragrance is comprised of synthetic ingredients. Second, having extravagant advertising / marketing budgets (and celebrity faces !) really jack up the prices. Ridiculous to me, but evidently it works.
I used to like when they put "samples" in magazines. To, me, that was the best form of advertising. I guess they stopped using that method because some individuals were sensitive to them. Must suck to be them!

Another cost that you must mention is Taxes, being very superfluous products, fragrance get a LOT of taxes from most Governments, in my country, when you buy fragrances, up to 80% of it's price is taxes only, and fragrances are not a lot more expensive here than in other countries, 30% more at best, so I believe everywhere it's this way too

These fragrances require multiple applications during the day to reactivate the scent, but I can afford it. I like this more.

Most people have no idea the amount of work, machinery and automation that it takes just to make the fragrance container and functional spray pump. All the automation assembly equipment is custom made. Even that opening chrome cap that we all take from granted is plastic with a custom metalizing process which it self is very complex. the presentation packaging if any one have ever seen those massive printing presses and the amount of related work that takes to keep refilling the paper, ink etc. Then you know that you're getting what you paid for. A lot of cologne for a low $ means it's most likely awful. But like any good cologne must try a sample first because every body chemistry is different.

Hey Antonio! I'm a teenager from Albaina and bought Dior Sauvage EDT about one month ago. I made a blind buy according to all the good reviews. According to all the reviews(including yours) it was going to last for about 8-12 hours, but for me it's lasting for only 3 hours. Applying points: 1 spray behind each ear, 1 or 2 sprays on the collar bones, 1 spray on the neck and in the pulse points of my arms. As the perfumer for my own niche house, i have to say that:
1: Niche is extremely overpriced and overhyped. Why? People expect their 400 bucks wasted to be decent, it's harder to accept it's bullshit since you paid a good price for it. There is a very low amount (TRULY a very low percentage of the niches out there) that are worth what they're asked. Even TF's and Creeds should cost 50 bucks, since, that's what they cost at the end of the day.
2: The ingredient quality is overrated as well. One of my briefs can cost 5 USD for a 50ml bottle and that's already double the profit. Selling it for 30 bucks would be perfectly acceptable, depending on the market.
There is no great difference between the cost of ingredients, unless you are using really expensive stuff (IE, Rose, jasmine, neroli absolutes and EO's, Natural Oud and such) in a HUGE amount, you're not going to obtain a great price discrepancy between two briefs, nor if one is fully synthetic and the other is fully natural, it's actually quite probable that the synthetic one will smell better, reach IFRA compliance much easier and overall be a more enjoyable and complex composition than a fully natural one. At the end of the day, pretty much any juice from the market will cost less than 10 - 15 or maybe even 20 USD, and i'm talking on the most luxurious things you can buy, Creed, Tom Ford (Which costs exactly the same as a proper designer brief) or even stuff like Amouage, Mancera or Parfums de Marly, you name it. Ingredients are not particularly costly and they're just an excuse to charge more. Proof of thy, Agua Brava by Puig has some ingredients that could perfectly be used in a Chanel composition, but they're not charging randomly on the idea of false exclusivity as Chanel does. Hence, a 200ml bottle of Agua Brava with almost all natural ingredients costs less than 20 bucks. So, no point at all in assuming a natural origin fragrance will be better by any means.

All you say is true but you left out that the more profit that a company makes on each bottle than the more likely they are to take a risk to make a fragrance unique. If designers want to make a profit on a cheap fragrance they have to sell a lot of them & not always but usually have to make them appeal to the widest amount of people possible. That comes at a cost to uniqueness usually

IMO , the whole fragrance industry is a huge con...I have tried literally hundreds of niche frags over the last few years, and only a few have performed even close to the hype. There's no way , as long as my arse has a whole in it, that they pick all those flowers, or comb the beach looking for whale snot ,, to make all those millions of bottles every year?? With the amount of juice produced in a year, the only way to keep up the volume is to use artificial ingredients...just look at the bottle and see what's in it! While I love my Frag's I'm way over the hype and refuse to pay full price for a fragrance.
    Thanks for the video Sir.
    Cheers Gregg.

So basically the bulk of the pricing on these >£100 products comes from fancy marketing, artificial scarcity and other psychological tricks? Things largely detached from costs of raw materials, their processing, the final day to day end use of the product, or even the skills of craftspeople like the perfumer or people designing packaging.
Man I thought car salespeople, videogame scalpers, and ticket scalpers were scummy. And the higher ends have the nerve to literally use the scalper's favourite tactic of "market based pricing", ie the art of pushing the envelope and seeing who's desperate enough to buy in at the artificially inflated price. Man I'll just stick to traditional Ouds.
There has to be more feeding into the pricing surely?

Coach contains ambergris and it costs $45, Explorer and Oud Noir contain oud and they cost around the same price. 🤣🤣💯

When they say it has oud or other ingredients, it doesn't always mean they are natural. There are definitely synthetic versions of oud.
That said, they will definitely charge whatever they think people will pay for them, so you're not paying just for the quality of the product.

I cannot stand the smell of Geranium oil. I don't know why anyone would want to walk around smelling like a garden centre. Terre D'Hermes, Versace Eros, even Bleu De Chanel has Geranium in it. I also wouldn't wear anything just because women like the smell. I have to enjoy the fragrance myself in order to wear it.

Not good enough of an explanation,70% of the price comes from the name brand ,for instance it costs $16 to manufacture a pair of Jordan’s in china and they sell them for over $200,why? Cause they know they can get away with it,same with all luxury brand, balenciaga just came out with a garbage bag for $1700 why? Cause they can get away with it,Do you really think any car is worth a million $? No you’re paying for the name brand ,it cost less then 10% to manufacture those cars and they sell them for an leg and an arm..don’t be fooled people

Because a fool and his money are soon parted. People think something expensive makes it better and this is why cooperations are making record profits. We are sold false promises of getting laid if we wear this or that. It is just aftershave not the tears of Christ.
