  • My new custom designed hi hats from Red Cymbals came in the mail. So I did an unboxing, then I played them, and then I fell in love with them. These hats are brilliant, and are going to be a welcome addition to the team!
Now, I just need to go pay for them. Speaking of which, if you want a pair for yourself, reach out to either myself or Red Cymbals and say you want "Phil's Phifteens"!
Huge thanks and shoutout to Red Cymbals; love your work guys!
    The Deets:
*15” Hi-Hats; designed by me, handcrafted in Istanbul, and sold by Red.
    *Med Top/Med-Heavy Botton
    *Low profile top & Bottom
    *Smallest hammer pein-ing available.
    *Small Bell Top/ FLAT BOTTOM!!
*Fully lathed top of top, unlathed under the top, same for bottom cymbal.
So essentially, the cymbals are lathed on the outside, and unlathed on the inside.
Somewhere down the road I might vent the bottom and add rivets to it, but maybe not. That was the original plan and design, but I really like them as they are.
For the record, this is not an endorsement or a paid product placement, I bought these cymbals, and genuinely love them.
The drumset in the video is a modded out Taye GoKit; both toms are snare drums. The rest of the cymbals include my Custom Red 23" Phlat China, and a 16" Sabian HH Manhattan Bridge Ride. The sticks are Vater Smitty Smith's Power Fusions.
I filmed and recorded the playing on a Zoom Q8 using the two onboard mics, a single Shure SM-81(over the hats but fairly high), and an AKG D112. I used only the Q8's on-board compressor (Kick) and limiter (OH). However, I did add some limiting and level adjustments in FCPX to balance out the audio levels with the talking bits from the shed. I don't know why people get so uptight and upset about this end of things, but there you go...

Thanks Mark, by that point I was trying to think of distinctive hi-hat parts that weren't just straight 1/8's...

I think that is the first time I've actually seen you play for more than a few seconds.

It’s a tom conversion that I simply left in the RIMS mount rather than using a snare stand. This is my practice kit in my office so it’s pretty stripped down.
