  • Joseph von Benedikt is an accomplished writer, host of the Backcountry Hunting Podcast, and big game hunting veteran. He is a class act and is especially knowledgeable about firearms, cartridges and ballistics. In this episode we talk about starting to put together a good backcountry elk rifle and his experience with answered prayer in the Alaskan wilderness among other things. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it!

    JOSEPH YOU DO A AWESOME JOB.

    This may be your best one yet. Joseph has a great podcast with a ton of information and this was a great interview as a rifle nerd. Expect a good write up once you decide on a rifle. I’m on a list for one of the new Mark V hunters, not as light as your back country but a little cheaper and that same weatherby action!

      Thanks for listening! Yea this conversation flew by and I didn’t even hit everything I wanted to! I saw some sweet rifles at the expo this weekend. I got an eye on a seekins and of course another weatherby potentially. Have you heard of seekins precision?

      @@thehuntersquestwhuntermcwa3475 Seekins makes some super nice stuff. Probably some of the best scope rings/bases you can get. I don’t have one of their rifles but have shot a Havak (7 mag). It was well balanced and more accurate than me. My only complaint is the vertical grip stocks haven’t grown on me yet but I understand their usefulness, especially as you start to walk out that range and I also prefer a floor plate to a detachable magazine.

      @@joshh5853 yea man, the stock seemed weird to me at first too but over the course of the weekend it started to grow on me a lot…

      So , I am one that has a 300 Weatherby Mag Vanguard High country topped off with a Leopold VX 5HD 3x15x44. This is a brand new set up. I also added a Terminator T2 muzzle brake. So, my question is what’s the best ammo going to be for this set up? I’ll be hunting Elk, mule deer , wolves and Black bear.
      Thanks, love your podcast.

      @@aqua.scape69 sounds like a sweet setup! TBH man, I’m not too familiar with weatherby ammo. I’m sure it’s all pretty good. Personally I like a copper mono bullet over a lead core. Will retain more weight and not put lead fragments in your food!

    One of my favorite podcasters to listen to. What a great podcast from 10 months ago in your old studio.
    I can tell that this conversation was a big influence on your decision making process on that beautiful Seekins Precision Havok Element in 300 Win Mag. Probably handled it the next week at the Western Hunting Expo.
    I actually had the same thought about Joseph 3 years ago when I started listening to his podcast. I thought he was 55-65 not 46. Very distinguished and deep voice and cadence to how he speaks.

      @@thehuntersquestwhuntermcwa3475 there is so little that comes off a bonded bullet,I'm not worried about it. They have like 90 percent weight retention . I couldn't get copper of any brand or weight to shoot better then 1.5moa . That's doable on whitetail,. But not for me . I need half moa or I'm not happy 😊

    Why do people think they need the biggest caliber possible to hunt with?
    You’re questioning a 6.5cm for deer hunting?
    That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard, 6.5 grendel is more than enough for any white tail people are also using the grendel for elk and moose and every other North American game animal but you’re questioning the 6.5cm lol
    That’s just insane to me

    • @thehuntersquestwhuntermcwa3475
      @thehuntersquestwhuntermcwa3475  2 роки тому +4

      Well, if you actually listen to what I said, I feel that the 6.5 cm is “ideal” for deer size game and that’s what I use. I was talking about an ELK TAG …personally, I don’t want to hunt ELK with 6.5 cm for a variety of reasons, but I’m not saying you can’t. Thanks.
