I remember listening to this episode coming home from work. Great stress relief for this veteran nurse, following a 12 hour shift. Thank you.

I recently heard this one on the podcast feed so it’s great to see all three of these beautiful big bore lever guns laid out.
I recently moved to a straight wall state in the state of Ohio so that Ruger/Marlin in 45-70 is high on my wish list for sure.
Thanks 🙏 for sharing good Sir.

I would have said Winchester Model 71 348 Winchester which is was an improved 1886 or the Browning/Miroku copy, but I suppose those would be considered medium bores. Of course only available on the used market. So how about an episode on medium bore lever guns? Savage 99, Winchester 88, Browning BLR in 358 Winchester, Winchester 71 or the Browning copy in 348. I think the BLR in 358 Winchester is still made but probably hard to find as a new gun. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

@davewinter2688 the .348 Win is a terrific choice as well! Harder to find but likely more versatile than the true big-bores. I'm hoping to take one of the Browning copies to Alaska for black bear this spring. And thanks of the suggestion! I'll try and address medium-bore lever-actions soon.

@@BackcountryHuntingPodcastare you going to video tape the black bear hunt? Would love to see a hunt with the 348. I have hunted with the 348, 405, and 45-70, and would love to do more, but age and health issues are putting a dampner on that.

45-90 uses a 2.4 inch case, where as the 45-70 uses a 2.1 inch case.

I've always liked the Winchester locking block as opposed to the Marlin locking lug. The locking block is superior to the Marlin in handling higher pressure loads. On the other hand, Marlin has the side ejection which makes scope mounting easy. I have a Model 94 Big Bore, AE in .444 Marlin with a 20" barrel. Quick, handy and accurate and I can load heavier charges because the Big Bore can handle 10% higher load pressures than the Marlins. She's my Blackie the Beast. Always great to watch you and Spomer together.

I have a 450 marlin. Although a 45 90 would be cool except for the recoil. I have a friend who calls me a masochist for having a 450 marlin.

Very cool... Great cartridge! In terms of recoil and ballistics the .450 Marlin and .45-90 with stout loads are basically identical.

1895 in .405, Model 71 in .348, Model 88 Win .284, Savage 99 in .308, BLR in SS 7mm-08, Model 99 takedown in .250-3000. What’d I miss? Great for scabbards on my saddle horses and fer quick shots.
You can keep your AR’s, ATV’s, 25X clickety scopes, and laser range finders.
Tain’t no better way to hunt.

One thing about the new Ruger made Marlin lever guns is the trigger pull is crazy heavy!! Remington made 1895’s had a trigger pull of 4.50 lb. Trigger pull. The new Ruger made 1895’s have a ridiculously heavy trigger pull of 6.50 lbs. This would to me say it’s a no go Joe!! By the way there were no “ Remlin” Marlin lever guns. They were actually J.M. Marlin lever guns assembled by former J.M. Marlin workers after Remington purchased Marlin Company. Remington did not start making their own Marlin lever guns until 2016. This means between the years 2010 and 2015 even though Remington owned Marlin Company the ones sold between 2010 and 2015 were genuine J.M. Marlin Company lever guns. Remington sold what J.M. lever guns they believed were acceptable from J.M. before they moved what they wanted to Illion N.Y. Where they re engineered all the parts and made them on high precision close tolerance CNC machines. Starting in 2016 Remington produced the best Marlin lever guns ever made. So if you want a new Remington Marlin 1895 lever gun look up one online starting with those made in 2016;and you will have a much better lever gun than the new one’s that Ruger is making with the super heavy trigger pulls. The new Ruger 336’s chambered in 30-30 win. Have a trigger pull of 7. 25 lbs. Really ridiculous for the price they are asking.

Thank you for the info… However, the samples that I’ve handled haven’t had trigger pulls that heavy… Are you basing that off of one example each, or a wide variety of them?

@@BackcountryHuntingPodcast Shooting Times Magazine August 2023 issue page 64. The author is Layne Simpson. He said the Ruger built Marlin 336 30-30 was 7.25 trigger pull and the 1895 Ruger Marlin has a trigger pull of 6.25. Other comparisons done he said that the Remington barrels were the best of either Ruger or J.M. Marlin. The J.M. Marlin barrels were some of the worst inside the bores.Deep tool marks across the lands. Not that they may not still shoot well. This was in 1980. He said the blueing on the barrels of the Remington Marlins were as good as any on the new Ruger made one’s and better than J.M. Marlin. Although the blueing on the sides of the Remington Marlins were not quite as good as Ruger. Layne said the most accurate was a Remington made 30-30 and Marlin J.M. 1895. But he remarked that the new Ruger made 30-30 was one of the most smooth actions he has ever shot. Just that the heavy trigger pull had to be improved. Also the wood to metal fit was better on the Ruger Marlins than J.M. Or Remington. In 2018 he tried out various models from both J.M. And Remington.
Then most recently tried the Ruger made one’s to compare.
