    I'm 25 and reviewing this! At first my ego said no, but after realizing I couldn't solve the SECOND problem...
    always gotta go back to the FUNDAMENTALS

  • @visionmath

    The question which explains these two problems is, "what is being raised to the power of 2". When you write -2^2, that means you are raising 2 to the power of 2. The negative sign in front of the 2 has nothing to do with the exponent. Therefore it will remain in front of the expression after 2 has been raised to the power of 2.
    When you take (-2)^2 you are raising -2 to the power of 2. The parentheses indicates that the negative sign in front of the 2 is part of what is being raised.

    I am confused. How did you know to plug 3 where the X is and -2 where the Y is? I see a -2 next to the Y that makes sense, I think, but I see a 5 next to the X not a 3. I was never taught algebra in school, so I’ve been trying to learn it. Thank you.

    I am not sure which example you are talking about. If you are looking at the second example, parts of the equation reads -2 x (-3)^2. Remember (-3)^2 = 9

  • @MrEricLieber

    Can you please explain how -2^2 is different from (-2)^2, how are they operated on differently?

  • @NastyNay000

    My question was:
    In reference to the portion of the last equation: When you -2y^2 x^2 + 1x^2 y^2 and it = x^2y^2 how did you know to apply the 2y to the 1x but then I realized you were applying it to both variables no matter the order due to the answer. Even tho you explained in detail earlier about that, it didn't sink till I saw the answer the 4th time. Thanks for the vid. I'm in the process of self teaching elem algebra to test out of the remedial math class via the elem. alg. accuplacer.

    (-3)2=9. The reason is the 2 is stating to multiply the number in parenthesis by itself. -3 x -3=9 not -3x2=6
    Another example (-5)2 means -5*-5=25
    Hope this helps you

    PEMDAS (the order of operation). Since you cannot simplify the inside of the parentheses, we move to the next letter which is E (exponents). There are no exponents so we move to M and D (multiplication and division). Multiply 6 x 3K = 18K. Then we do -5 x K = -5K. Then we do -5 x 2=-10. We now end up with 18K - 5K - 10 = 13K - 10

    The video is a review of some basic elements and operations used in algebra 2. Therefore the title "a review of elementary algebra"

  • @visionmath
    @visionmath  11 років тому

    Parts of the algebra course teaches you how to work with variables. Variables are the unknown numbers in an equation, usually x and y. My example in the video covers an equation in which it is assumed that x=3 and y= -2. Knowing the value of x and y, I replace my x and y with the given values. That is why x turns into 3 and y turns into -2. The fact that there is already a -2 in front of the y does not have anything to do with me replacing the y with -2. Hope it helps.

    In the first equation example, -2•2=4? I thought a negative multiplied by a positive is going to be a negative #?

    on the 4x^2-2y^2+5 why is the answer positive 3? it seems like on the last line you ignored order of operations. could you please explain?

    • @visionmath
      @visionmath  11 років тому +2

      The last line is only composed of addition and subtraction. Therefore the math is pretty straight forward. That is why I jumped to the answer right away. 16 - 18 = -2. Then -2 + 5 = 3. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions

  • @visionmath
    @visionmath  11 років тому

    It is easy to forget the steps. So don't sweat it! The important thing to remember is PEMDAS (the order of operation).
    The way to solve your problem is the following:
    1) Distribute the 8 onto both terms in the parentheses. 8*7X + 8*18
    2) Your new equation is now 56X + 144 = 368
    3) Subtract 144 from both sides which now leaves you with 56X = 224
    4) Divide both sides by 56 which now leaves you with X = 4
    I hope that helped. Let me know if you run into any more problems. I'm happy to help.

    WHY DID YOU TURN -12 TO +12 IN THE FIRST PROBLEM?

  • @visionmath
    @visionmath  11 років тому

    I am glad you partially agree with you. You do make an important point. The point is that you can break down this aglebraic expression in a few ways. Depending on how far along in the math studies you are, there are different ways of approaching this problem.
    What I did was, I jumped a step while explaining (verbally) what I did. What I should have done instead (to make it clearer), was to say: - 2 x (-2) x 3 = - (-12), which is equal to 12. Thank you for the input and feedback

    Don't forget the rule of multiplying positive and negative numbers. Negative times another negative number = Positive. -2*(-2)*(3) = Positive 12 because you are multiplying two negatives.
    I am glad you enjoyed the video. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Well if you think about it , the subtraction sign was already there , now positive or negative number it doesn't effect adding or subtraction example : 5(3) + 3 - 2(-2)3 = what set these 2 equations apart is the subtraction sign , regardless what happens on eiither sides at the end it is a Y - Z = ? , but if it were to be this problem I will agree with you : 9x + 4 and -5x + 27 ; what is X and the absolute value , then ill agree with you
