    I know a comment pointed this out already, but I wanna add more:
    A Devil Summoner is a human who makes contracts with actual demons and utilizes them in combat, some even finding ways to get themselves demonic essences in order to use real magic. I specify it like that because Persona powers are mental energy, psychic powers tied to spirituality, nothing to do with demons. The Personas the characters use are mental interpretations of those beings made by the Collective Unconscious, basically psychic projections with powers attached to their mental associations. Demons are just the real thing, but often their form is based on the mental associations when they physically manifest, as very few demons can exist physically in the human world all on their own. They require magnetite in order to take shape, hence that's a resource in SMT games. Demons, for the most part, exist in the Expanse, which does take shape depending on human desires, but this has nothing to do with the mental energy system of the Collective Unconscious and its.. metaverses/mandalas/shadow expanses/what ever you wanna call these purely mental spaces as. There's similarities, but they're not the same.
    The scale of power between the two ideas is also pretty massive, seeing as SMT at times just casually drops the idea of destroying or remaking the whole universe at you. That Tamaki gal? She met Stephen at the end of SMT If, and that dude has casually fought against all of the SMT main characters all at once while throwing singularities at them.

    • @fatefullydead5585
      @fatefullydead5585 Рік тому

      That's a really interesting way to look at it. So you're basically saying the Abyss, and Persona's Sea of Souls are 2 different dimensions/plains of existence? I know most of the SMT & Persona games are to be taken as stand alone unless directly connected, and I get P3 was a reboot of sorts, but it still kept some of the same lore from older games, or at least a couple references, but I'll get to the point. How many dimensions do you believe exist in the If/Persona timeline? Like there's normal reality, the metaverse/collective unconscious, the velvet room/in-between, and then the sea of souls, and actual smt Abyss? Or would you say those last 2 are somewhat the same? How do they co-exist, considering devil summoner is in the same timeline as persona? There's also the obvious difference in the persona born from your heart, and the ones you actively recruit, fuse and summon in games. Even in Persona 5 there's a clear difference between Arsene, and the other recruitible "personas". Like I have reason to believe that those recruitible personas are in fact demons from the Abyss that have been trapped on the unconscious plain, by distortions. I do agree through that Persona use psychic powers and are linked to cognition. Hence why in later games you can't summon them in the real world without particular circumstances permitting. In P1 & 2, you could, but also then you could argue that there was particular circumstances that allow it then, like the whole dreams becoming reality. But I still thing on some level Persona users are still forming contracts with demons. Like in the way in Nocturne and SMTV you can communicate to them directly without a comp. Granted for the Demifiend and Nahobino it's bc they are not completely human themselves, but since persona users are on the psychic plain, they can do the same or something similar. Like yes the main persona is unique to that character and manifests accordingly, but that character didn't create their Persona. The collective unconscious or humanity itself did, just as humanity itself creates all gods and demons through belief. Like Izanagi, for example. He's used as the Persona for P4 MC, but he's also a god all on his own in SMT lore, and exists apart from Yu as well. Like Yuu didn't invented Izanagi. Izanagi already existed, Yu just had an affinity for him on a spiritual level, so when the manifestation of his soul awaken it called out to Izanagi, or manifested as Izanagi. I mean I guess it's up to debate if you think he actually formed a real contract with the actual God Izanagi, or if it's just his own soul as a reflection of Izanagi. But SMT doesn't just include gods, and demons, it includes any random shit people believe in, like mothman. So you get character's with personas from folktales and such. But I'm just really interested to where the intersection between SMT and Persona actually lies, bc I don't think they're as separate as we initially might think. Like is it a hard rule you need comp to summon demons irl, and that a persona user really couldn't do that? Like did they differentiate that at all in SMT If or P1? Or is it really only under those special circumstances where realities are merging? Is it something that was possible before, but now is impossible due to changes in cognition? If creature like Morgana or Teddy can exist in reality why can't Persona, or shadows? We already know using a comp can summon abrasions into reality. I'm not saying any of that is or isn't possible, I'm just asking questions. I think you've played more of the older games than I have. I haven't played If or P1, and I just started the devil summoner series, and have not played all the content for that. I really have only played Mainline SMT, and Persona 2-forward. But it would be interesting to hear opinions on this.

    • @Arexion5293
      @Arexion5293 Рік тому

      @@fatefullydead5585 Sea of Souls is indeed a different concept, nowhere mentioned in SMT. It also makes me question the nature of the demons in P1 and P2, but I suppose that can be just excused with the fact that a demon can manifest in multiple different physical forms at once. These games have different writers, so some world building confusion is bound to happen. But basically SMT If/Persona/Devil Summoner universe has the Expanse, Collective Unconscious (Velvet Room is part of it) which has ties to Sea of Souls, and what ever realms exist in Devil Summoner games. They are the same universe, even if P3 onwards Persona seems to gloss over continuity a lot. I don't wanna think about the nonsense that is P3 Nyx's backstory from an art book...It doesn't really fit previous continuity, let alone the fact that this is an alternate SMT 1/Nine/2 timeline.
      The shadows in P5 are just that, shadows. They come from the Collective Unconscious, born from collective associations while I'd assume a persona born from heart is more closely tied to the persona user's mental associations. A psychic person's cognitions are comparable to the non-psychic collective's cognitions I guess. None of this is really explained in detail.
      "Like is it a hard rule you need comp to summon demons irl, and that a persona user really couldn't do that?"
      The whole idea is that the traditional demon summoning rituals could be translated into computer code, which lead to the creation of comps. So answer is anyone can do it, but a comp is far more usable, cost effective and safe. Megami Tensei basically established this idea. Hazama in SMT If does a more traditional demon summoning ritual but messes it up and pulls the whole school into the Expanse. This somehow leads into him becoming a highly powerful demon.
      "If creature like Morgana or Teddy can exist in reality why can't Persona, or shadows?"
      They are shadows. Personas and shadows can manifest in reality, but the rules for this seem to waver between games. I mean the rules are tied to the Collective Unconscious, which is the collective unconscious mind of humanity itself, so it's really no wonder it is ever changing. Great writing excuse to do what ever idea you want! Hah.

    • @zeroattentiongaming820
      @zeroattentiongaming820 Рік тому +7

      While that's true, I'd say Persona 4 is easily the most Jojo inspired. Diamond is Unbreakable and P4 are both small town murder mysteries, starring high school students who do their best to live a normal life despite the bizarre occurrences. Both take quite a while for the main plot to start, compared to their predecessor and succesor. Both are fairly light hearted overall but with a much more down to earth, close to home villain who can be more haunting for some than the grandiose approach of DIO and Nyx/Erebus. Both feature a similar visual in corpses hanging from a utility pole and one being tangled up in the wires between two poles, which serve as the catalyst for the kinda goofball best bro character to avenge someone.
      Though Persona did beat Araki to the punch in one huge regard. While not nearly as similar as P4 and DIU, Persona 2 and Stone Ocean use a similar major plot point. Spoilers for Stone Ocean if anyone still hasn't seen it, P2 as well.
      Innocent Sin and Stone Ocean both end with a universal reset of sorts, both coming right after the death of a main character in the case of Stone Ocean's first reset. In both Stone Ocean's second reset and Eternal Punishment, only one of the main party retains their memories in the new universe.
      Both Eternal Punishment and Stone Ocean also act as the end of the franchises as they had been, with Persona 3 setting the very different foundation the series would use going forward and Steel Ball Run being completely removed from the Jojo timeline, in favor of a new one which Jojolion and apparently Jojolands also belong to. If you want to count the Stone Ocean anime, both P2 and Part 6 were a single story split up in a sense. Part 6 released in 3 separate batches, Persona 2 was two games.
      Araki didn't do his universal reset until 2003, Persona did theirs in 1999 and the aftermath came in 2000. Though Araki started his new Jojo verse in 2004, Persona wouldn't reinvent itself till 2006. I don't think Araki was copying Persona 2 when he came up with Made in Heaven since there's some massive differences, but it's kinda funny to see him do what Persona already did, when Persona 4 would go on to do what DIU already did. Even funnier that Netflix would give Stone Ocean a similar split and wait between batches as Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment.
      At this rate, I just want to see Araki and Atlus do a collab. I'd even settle for a crossover fighting game since both Personas and Stands have been wonderfully incorporated into that medium already.

    Theres a lot of devil summoners in early Persona games because it was a more interconnected world back then and Persona was a Megaten series unlike modern Persona, now you're lucky to even hear a single line referencing some important character from a previous game.
    Main and side characters of other Megaten games show up in Persona 1 and 2 like Tamaki who is the main character of SMT IF... which is basically the prototype of Persona or Daisuke Todoroki you bring up at 5:25 who is Kyouji Kuzunoha from SMT Devil Summoner whose a spirit who can posses peoples bodies which I think is also the first megaten set in modern day japan handling supernatural events like smt if... and persona would eventually do.
    I feel like if you're going to be making a video like this explaining stuff like this which makes you come off as an authority on the subject you should at least know basic stuff like this and the series as a whole but instead it comes off as you're just someone who only really likes persona 5 and 4 and you're looking back at these older games as an oddity to poke fun at instead of having an actual real interest in them. You're probably just doing these persona 1 and 2 videos to "just get them out of the way" so you can talk about the games you actually want to talk about, even this video is just comparing the early games to the later games.
    People like SnicketySlice give a way more insightful overview of these past games, how they grew from the Megaten series, their parallels to Jungs work and how the characters tie into their personas.
    Its clear you love some of the later games and you want to share that love, you just don't really have anything insightful to say and being "nakey jakey at home" isn't really funny either.

    I always figured the reason Persona awakenings are such is because Philemon and Nyarlotep were more involved. Also why P2 mentions Persona growing weaker without use which isn't a thing in Arena and why it's so much easier to summon your Persona than later where it takes effort to fo that in the real world.
    They're getting the cheap insta versions compared to 3, 4, and 5 because of those 2 running around.

    To add on to what someone else said in the comments, Devil Summoning and having a Persona are vastly different, both in the action and what powers are involved. Persona ask a person to call upon, in the most cliche way possible, the power of the user's soul and that's where you take the philosophical idea of the self and manifest it into something tangible. Devil Summoning is much simpler - a person uses a device called a COMP to speak with and summon demons (sometimes even see). The COMP allows the user to summon demons they've managed to convince to join them.

      @aerith yeah that boss was annoying , with the whole knocking it down and it summoning, then using a resist spell so I couldn't knock it down for a longer period
      Plus I was playing on easy injust wanted to blitz through it because p4 is way better and I hadn't beat p4. I only got to the first dungeon like maybe a decade and half ago 🤔

      The only character that really had a whole Persona awakening in P3 is just the MC. A Shadow almost kills Yukari, then the MC gets the whole "I art thou, and thou art I" shpiel, uses the Evoker, Orpheus shows up, turns into Thanatos, and then kills the Shadow. Everyone else just has their Personas the moment they walk into Tartarus, including Yukari who was there during MC's awakening.

    I'm down for a story recap. I love the lore and vibe of the early games, but they are a huge time sync if your not using a walkthrough.

    I wanna play the PS1 Personas, without having to experience the awful localization. Guess I should just learn Japanese, then? I need an excuse 'cause I know the PSP versions exist.
