Scurlock studied at University in Washington. He was quite good at chemistry and began cooking and selling meth using the university labs at night. He used his profits to purchase a 20 acre farm where he continued in the drug trade. When his distributor was killed, he quit the drug business immediately. He then decided to start robbing banks, and recruited some friends over the years to help. He was good at it, until Thanksgiving holiday traffic slowed their getaway, and led to his end.
@@philipchampion You can find this information in true crime author Ann Rule's book about Scurlock, and also in the television journalism show '48 Hours' segment on Scurlock which aired in 2008. He also has a Wikipedia article that covers these things. Most of it comes from public record and interviews with law enforcement and principle figures in the case.
He robbed all those bank's before he got caught..The incompetence of the FBI is there for all to see. Then again it took the FBI 20 years to catch the Unabomber only after his brother gave him up😂😂😂😂😂.
How about all the cases that they do solve. You don't think about that? You only talk about a handful of high profile cases as if the FBI only works on one case at a time.
I think there's more to it than that. It sort of demeans him - moves him into a different category - he's now an amateur, obsessed with publicity and marketing, and is all about looks without anything substantive behind it. Makes him less threatening, and as that name became chanted like a mantra throughout all the media of the day (newspapers, TV, radio, word of mouth), it would "defuse the bomb" by making mockery of him.
After watching lot's of these shows, the FBI wouldn't be able to catch anything without the help of the public and informers. They still didn't catch him in the end.
I’ve never stopped being disgusted by the way the police shot blindly into the back of Scott’s van despite neither of the two men in the back having shot at them, or being given the chance to surrender (which they would have done in a heartbeat). They acted like the wild-west cowboys they obviously wish they were). In the current Netflix film about the subject, one of the police said they ‘wanted to kill’ the occupants of the van. It's always been that way considering there is what, one cop for every couple of hundred people (or more) in an average city? That's why they hold press conferences and have tip lines. Most modern police forces have a mantra they market that falls along the lines of "We can't go if we don't know" for a good reason. Civilians opening up their mouths and spouting what they know always goes hand in hand with policing.

That guy was gettin away with all that $ for far too long... what an annoying little bastard! And of course, it turned out that he wasn't as smart as he thought he was.
The book explains that he got caught because he was recognized by a teller before he even entered the last bank. She tripped an alarm, and his getaway driver hadn't yet turned on the police scanner so they didn't know the police had already been dispatched to the scene. That's how he always knew when it was time to leave the bank (whether he was finished grabbing the money or not).
