I always thought the train sound was just realistic background. When you fire a gun in a room you go instantly deaf more or less. Having just shot two guys in the face Michael wouldn't have heard much at all. We're hearing it from Michael's perspective.

The scene was pivotal to the plot and to Michaels story! Definitely added to it.
