Hi there Pamela. I’m a (very!) retired model. I worked full time for an established agency, had a steady book rate and a pretty concrete work ethic. Although I do agree with you the industry has a well documented underbelly I kept my head focused on my business and wellbeing and was lucky enough to stay out of it. I am not clear what you are referring to as the “underpayment of models”. In my highest grossing year in the 90’s i made 120K and I am definitely not famous although some folks randomly recognized me once in a while back then. I made enough for o er a decade to support undergrad, a year of grad school and buy my house and then move on from the industry. Even if you listen to this young lady recounting today’s pay (I have no idea her rate or contract) she received 200 for probation a 3-4 hour job, which is 75-50/hr and 400 for a catwalk, which was probably about 4-5, so a bit higher per hour. This involved really little to no skill save her beauty and collaboration. Please don’t try to amortize all of our wages over our casting hours, etc. That is such a slippery slope akin to an actress claiming that all her waking hours spent on skin care, voice lessons, etc should be assessed in her “pay”. I honestly never felt anything but very blessed for the flexibility and excellence pay modeling afforded me and never once complained or felt put upon.
Most models get very little exposure. She is right about this topic. I dated a model 20 years ago. The vast majority of her gigs were modeling clothes for unknown designers for $50 for a half day shoot or $100 for a full day and it might be a runway or photos and the pay was the same. A lot of models do generic catalog and ad stuff that isn't even designer wear. In fact that constitutes most clothing modeling. There are also hand models and hair models and make-up models. A girl I went to high school had a perfect straight thick mane of mink brown hair cut in a perfect line right at her knees. Not a hair out of place and she went on vacation to Florida at Christmas with her family in her junior year and came back with a modeling contract to do shampoo commercials for three years and it was for $25,000. That was 1978. She ended up going to school on that money. Her face and body never appeared in any of her work because they just wanted to see her hair and have her move it around.
Idk what the percentage is but it’s so sad seeing how little of them make it to being a millionaire model strictly from modeling. They put in so much work and effort for such little pay out
OMG, I am just so so shocked about the Vogue pay, it is so low, I can't even believe it. I'm a photographer, and amateur model with paid jobs, for very small gig, usually one photographer, and I make more than that. It is so not ok. As a photographer, for small fashion brands, like very local, the models would get paid more as well. Unbelievable. I have always wanted to be published in Vogue paper, but the more I learn about them behind the scenes, the more I am shocked and disgusted by their practices. They don't pay people, wtf. If the biggest don't pay, how are you expected to make a living?
Guys the model job isn’t only about exposure, there are other stuff a model can do, like fitting which pays 70-80$ per hour, and if you become a brand main fit model, oh that’s big money. Just calculate working for months, years if you want to. But fitting is more common in Milan and Paris since the main big elite brands comes from this cities. E-commerce pays 800-1k$ a day, and for fast fashion they use the same model for weeks! Modelling is not just about carrier, of course it is funnier being seen on billboards, fashion shows but that’s up to what’s the trend of this industry, not only up to you.
For anyone looking into modeling, try and do commercial/ catalog modeling. That's normally what pays the bills. So think of the girlie who do target, walmart, jcpennys, Macy's, etc. These normally pay quite well and are looking for more girl/ guy next door types. The next step is commercials. If you can land spots like Flo or Jake from state farm. They also get paid well, and if you negotiate, you can get royalties from the commercials airing. Ita sad to say but fashion houses and magazines, the things most models aspire to, pay very little or you do it for exposure/ clothes. You have to become a big name or know someone to actually get paid the big bucks for these.
Well Kendall and Kylie clearly didn't have to worry about climbing the ladder or having a suffer they were just giving these contracts like no big deal which is a sad they're all right I've seen better looking more beautiful models
I’m pretty sure it’s illegal in the United States to pressure employees to not discuss wages. Also, contracts cannot legalize anything illegal, so there shouldn’t be much trouble. I hear neither law is particularly well enforced though
Correct me if I’m wrong, but essentially the runways are your audition/small gig and campaigns are your bread n butter not the other way round like every thinks?
I thought the same but it makes more sense when you think about it. Runways, you’re only seen for a very short amount of time walking…campaigns are front cover magazines, billboards, advertising shoots that promote new clothing with brands so it’s more work tbh
well.. I did a shoot for vogue portugal a year and a half ago and got shit because in my country the press is already considered to be enough of a pay when you're not a big name so..
You notice that the modern supermodels all come from established wealthy families- Gigi and Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner- like you’re not going to see a model with a story similar to Gia, Tyra or Twiggy
There is also supply and demand at play here. A lot of people want to be models and advances in the beauty industry and advances in computer image editing have lowered the standards a bit. More people are also interested in being celebrities or being famous than in previous generations.
Exactly what I was trying to explain to a separate comment here. This is complaining without a reason. It’s 100K a year even with a two week unpaid vaca. Perspective please.
So true, I was a model and in the end had to leave the industry because I couldn't support myself anymore, my work did not allow me do go to castings part time as well.
Thanks for saying that last part about being at the right place and time. Success is work AND luck. But you can’t have luck if you don’t go looking, but just because you go looking doesn’t mean you’ll immediately get rewarded.
Yup this is true that's why most of the known models now became successful because given that their parents have connections or mother was also a known model it does help. Especially when you have big network (following, engagements etc) they'll hire you it's not really when "you're the best" because most of the time when you model it its also similar to being an endorser given a fan or somebody that follows you will be interested.
That's honestly how most good jobs go. When you start having experience your pay goes up because with experience you're worth more to the company and could be stolen away by a company offering more if they don't.
But, how often are these jobs? 'Cause $250-$400 for a day's work is not bad at all. I'm guessing runway events are scarce, but regular shoots... Don't know. Genuinely curious
"We pay in exposure" 💀
😒

The next step is commercials. If you can land spots like Flo or Jake from state farm. They also get paid well, and if you negotiate, you can get royalties from the commercials airing.
Ita sad to say but fashion houses and magazines, the things most models aspire to, pay very little or you do it for exposure/ clothes. You have to become a big name or know someone to actually get paid the big bucks for these.
Hope you become super successful! I love that you are relatable.
If your here after her big chop
👇🏽
idk man, i don’t think i can buy food for myself with "exposure"
Well Kendall and Kylie clearly didn't have to worry about climbing the ladder or having a suffer they were just giving these contracts like no big deal which is a sad they're all right I've seen better looking more beautiful models
Kylie was never a model.
Bro exposure doesn't pay bills 😭 how do you live???
Chile let me hurry up and subscribe so you can get these UA-cam coins.💛
I’m pretty sure it’s illegal in the United States to pressure employees to not discuss wages. Also, contracts cannot legalize anything illegal, so there shouldn’t be much trouble.
I hear neither law is particularly well enforced though
The more I learn, the more modeling seems like thinly veiled sex trafficking 😢
Correct me if I’m wrong, but essentially the runways are your audition/small gig and campaigns are your bread n butter not the other way round like every thinks?
I thought the same but it makes more sense when you think about it.
Runways, you’re only seen for a very short amount of time walking…campaigns are front cover magazines, billboards, advertising shoots that promote new clothing with brands so it’s more work tbh
@@bastian9693 idk if it is "more work" as it is more exposure.
@Bastian 96 more people see the ads and they are constantly being shown to you in magazines and on billboards.
well.. I did a shoot for vogue portugal a year and a half ago and got shit because in my country the press is already considered to be enough of a pay when you're not a big name so..
A lot of the top models these days are the product of nepotism- that must be frustrating for other models trying to get their spot in the industry.
Sounds like an mlm where you have to buy the product to sell it
Omg I realized who you remind me of!! ...The cartoon character the Swan Princess!👱♀️💖✨️
That makes me feel like I didn't miss much not being in the modeling industry 😅
How do you make it? Usually you have to live in the most expensive places just to get modeling jobs.
Why are ur hair long i thought u burned ur hair of
Oh so you get paid in exposure...
That's bullshit
Work is work and you should get paid for your work even if you're not popular
I mean, $200-400 a day isn't too bad.....
You notice that the modern supermodels all come from established wealthy families- Gigi and Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner- like you’re not going to see a model with a story similar to Gia, Tyra or Twiggy
It's giving unpaid internship
Must be rough to be a dime a dozen...
I love your short Black hair.
Y’all need to unionize or sumn, boo.
Editorial jobs pay you shit because it’s to strengthen your image, the money is in campaigns and eccomerce
It shouldn’t work that way.
No one: me: Your hair is moving
U have 9.3k views and 13k likes
I was actually surprised to hear that you got paid for Vogue. I have heard in the past that they pay in "exposure"
That's a fine excuse for having people basically work for free for your multimillion dollar company.
There is also supply and demand at play here. A lot of people want to be models and advances in the beauty industry and advances in computer image editing have lowered the standards a bit. More people are also interested in being celebrities or being famous than in previous generations.
$400 for a days work isn't that bad, tbh. If you are working consistently you'll be just fine
Exactly what I was trying to explain to a separate comment here. This is complaining without a reason. It’s 100K a year even with a two week unpaid vaca. Perspective please.
So they are basically paying in exposure until you get big enough that they actually have to pay you money?
Have you been in a campaign
To all you 304's out there only fans is not modeling
Omg i wanna be a model so badddd
Keep in mind it’s a short term career. Past a certain age you’ll stop getting gigs altogether
So true, I was a model and in the end had to leave the industry because I couldn't support myself anymore, my work did not allow me do go to castings part time as well.
'we pay in exposure' nah yall pay in exploitation
Când You post a video with thr make-up process?
Being in the right place, right time, with the right contacts/ relatives 🤷🏾♀️
Models should unionize.
Just as exploitative as the music industry. SMH. Paying in “exposure” 🤢
Short cut: they offer you money. If you take it, that is your net worth
Vogue paid you $250 ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
A lot of brands still dont pay models and others pay very very little ............ Models need to get an actual career...... smh
That's honestly how most good jobs go. When you start having experience your pay goes up because with experience you're worth more to the company and could be stolen away by a company offering more if they don't.
Most good jobs don't start off at essentially minimum wage.
Oh wow. I thought they were paid much more. Good luck. Maybe your big break will come soon.
At least you were paid when you shot for Vogue magazine. I have shot for most top magazines in india. No one pays. Nothing. Zero.
250$ In Indian currency is so much bro 2,09,947 💀
I want you to make $$$ cause after stalking you now on your vid’s… sista yo worth a MIL!!!!!!!!! ❤
This is why and how Kendall Jenner got in so easily and quickly and made so much money so far because as she just said. Popularity and image
This is partly why you're doing UA-cam I guess...
But, how often are these jobs? 'Cause $250-$400 for a day's work is not bad at all.
I'm guessing runway events are scarce, but regular shoots... Don't know.
Genuinely curious
jeez but onlt $400 for a RUN WAY WALK ?? i’m sorry that’s crszy i would need a calm 2k
