  • ☀️ WELCOME! ☀️ I EMPTIED MY SCRAP BIN! ♻️ With no set design plan in place, I simply started sewing scraps together: first by 2s, then by 4s, and continuing. I ended up with a BOLT of scrap fabric ready to be used in future projects! ✂️ The finished bolt is 24 feet long, and the average width is 16 inches. (7.31 meters by about 40 centimeters). Total project time 19 hours, 40 minutes (of which round one along took 9 hours).
I hope you use this idea to have some FUN with your scraps!

I sew my scraps together each MONTH. I can't stand to go longer than a month. It makes me not want to go into my sewing room if I have stuff looking at me in a pile. LoL. After i sew it monthly I cut it into 12 inch squares. I have made several lap throws for the elderly in my church. I leave them on the pews and if they wish to they can take them home. If not after a month or so of cold weather I bring them home to wash. Year round I leave about 10 of them at church. The congregation knows where they are if not on a pew. I have made many for a local nursing facility as well. It's my self mission I will continue as God allows me to sew.

I was going to do this and started to with my scraps. I realized I was finding no joy or satisfaction in doing so. I decided to donate my scraps to the local senior center since they make quilts for children in the hospital. I feel good that they are put to use for something positive not wasted and thats the perfect usefulness for my scraps. The only scraps I keep are strips now. Keep having fun , otherwise what's the point.

Garment sewing does leave you a good amount of scraps for quilts! If you're someone who does both it would be a nice sentimental quilt to add scraps from all your non-quilt sewing projects into a quilt. If you mostly are home decor then that's another type of scrap quilt too usually with some heavier fabrics so no batting needed.

Thank you for doing this for us! I have made some crumb quilts and it's an amazing way to use up the smallest of pieces. Anything bigger than 1 inch by 1 inch gets used up. I recently made 41 pillows for the homeless (approx. 9 inches by 15-18 inches) with straps (often from pant legs). The stuffing I used was leftover batting, pillow stuffing, fabric that I couldn't use, cut up old socks, even the smallest pieces of thread - nothing to the landfill! It was satisfying - and very well received! I'm looking forward to getting back to my scraps; thanks for the encouragement!

This was a fun video to watch. I did a small scale of this project. I used up my scraps from all my mens shirts that I had cut down. There was over 50. I made my yardage 30 inches wide for the main piece and around 26 long. Then I made strips about 6 to 8 inches wide by 36 to 40 inches long. The main body I cut out a deer head and appliquéd to a large piece of material. The strips will be a wide border for a quilt I am making for my husband. It gave me satisfaction knowing I used all my material possible. You are right about the bulk and seams. I made my stitches shorter about 2 and my seam just over 1/4”. The other important part for me was the pressing. I wanted my material flat as possible. I couldn’t do my chain piecing without having my blade saver. It is definitely a game changer when working with scraps.

Instead of using a wrapping paper roll (it has acids in it that can damage the material if it takes years to sew the roll) I went down to the dollar store and bought pool noodles to wrap mine around. Hm🤔 things to think about. I help at a charity quilting group, and we make a lot of scraps. Many are even bigger than that, but generally anything not in 6” or 10” squares is “scrap” to us. Even though our scraps get recycled into fiber fill, making something useful would still be preferable. You sew a lot more efficiently than I do, so I probably can’t hold myself to 20 hours, but the amount of fabric you generated is approximately the amount needed for our quilt tops. This has inspired me, I think Im going to start messing around with some scrappy sewing and see how it goes!

There's no time like the present though, so I am going to start doing this with my scraps.
I love the zero waste of this idea. I also thought, like some of the other commenters here, that the trim cuttings could be used as stuffing for 100% zero waste.

Thank you so much. I've been working on a scrap quilt for my aunt, and I am so happy to see this method of scap sewing. I wish I had seen this a few years ago. I work on the quilt from time to time. She wants a king-size quilt. I ran out of scrap Fabric.

Thank you so much for posting this! I am not a great sewer. I love little projects using scraps that I was given. I love this idea of sewing them all together to have them ready for future projects. I look forward to new videos on how you will be using this.

Thanks so much Patty! ☀️❤️ I made a "bolt" over a year ago, and here's the video of using the very end of the bolt. It was so satisfying! ✂️ I have made quilts zip bags, clothing and all kinds of things 🧵 from the scrap leftover fabric! ua-cam.com/video/tZDSpkkoCsU/v-deo.htmlsi=iceszbr4zI22qRga

Neat concept! I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have any hair left after that project! I almost didn’t make it through going through my scraps and cutting them into squares and strip sizes I use a lot. But now that it’s done and everything neatly organized I am so happy I stuck with it. It’s amazing all the things you can do with scraps. I recently went to a by donation garage sale. O my goodness I absolutely made out like a bandit there was so much there in fabric I found a box of 21/2 inch squares hundreds of them. I can’t list everything I got but the jewel of the day was a shoebox full of quilt blocks with the pattern and all the fabric needed to finish the quilt for $2. I ended up with 2 trash bags full of fabric and most of it vintage. I was just in heaven with that haul. Your channel is fun!

🌞☀️ thanks so much, Liz! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and the channel. I love sharing a little bit with others. I am so jealous of your garage sale haul. I have found a few neat things at estate sales and garage sales but nothing like you describe! That’s the dream, isn’t it.? 💕
