In this our first episode, we look at the differences between vernal pools and other types of wetlands that you might see in the Northeast, and get a first look at the creatures that might live there.

It's a shame that where I live vernal pools are considered a hazard due to mosquito larvae, when I was a kid there was so much life in these ponds with frogs/newts/myriads of insects but a lot of them are drained now so they can never "top up"

What would you call a frog pond that came back most years until my grandfather build a mini Aqueduct from the hillside pouring water into the pond making it stay year round every year even during droughts?

Vernal pools are filled by rainfall and snow melt, aquifers are usually responsible for fresh water springs and streams.

What about killifish they're found all over the world and have a similar adaptation to the fairy shrimp

Killifish are a similar species to betta fish and have a seasonal and non-seasonal variety, on eBay you can find several species which you can get the eggs or live fish shipped to you through the mail.

It's very easy to hatch the eggs you just put them in water and they do the rest for you, you'll want to feed them micro food anything from decapsulated or freshly hatched fairy shrimp daphnia or other micro foods for fish fry. Then let the fish grow for at least 7 to 10 days to let them grow for the transfer into a tank that's 20 gallons or less so they can easily find the food.
