Vernal Pool Chronicles: Spotted Turtle Encounter March 2018
Переглядів 2,2 тис.6 років тому
I visited a vernal pool in Rhode Island and had a wonderful encounter with a spotted turtle. These turtles are about 3-5 inches in size, and can be found in vernal pools in spring. They like the cooler weather, unlike most other reptiles. Males have a concave plastron (underside), long and thick tails, a dark spot under the chin, and brown eyes. Females have a flat plastron, short thin tails, a...

I visited a vernal pool during this migration so I could show you the animals involved and talk about their stories.

Vernal Pool Chronicles: American Toads
So no mention of the aquifers underground that create these ponds?
Vernal pools are filled by rainfall and snow melt, aquifers are usually responsible for fresh water springs and streams.
I was just out trying to catch scuds and instead my first scoop of the net I pulled up a TON if these guys. I had no idea they were native to Ohio. I’m astonished. How cool.
Have nothing against fairy shrimp but zealous "protection of fairy shrimp" at Fairview Park , Costa Mesa, CA, by USG Fish and Wildlife Service is one major factor why Parks Dept, finally prohibited paid permit RC electric powered model plane and glider flying at Fairview Park after 36 years of harmonious flying hobby usage.
Good content. Terrible choice in background music.
love this we have these here them and toads are my favorite
I never get tired of hearing this.
Awesome! I’ve never found one before, such a great find!
Thank you so much!
Are they like freshwater artemia?
yes there many varieties of them
Need to get spotted turtles protected
I am an artemia nerd - <3 this video!
Wait..... I live in Rhode island!!!!!
Thank you very much. Very good
I found a wild fairy shrimp and it looks similar but different, can i acclimate it to freshwater to cohabitate with my albino plecos?
I hope this guy and reservation continue these productions. Some of the most educational and informative I have found.
Love your work! Your underwater video is sick and documentary quality.
Love all your work. You are an excellent teacher. Your passion is contagious!
Love all your stuff!
Dude I've been watching for five minutes and I haven't heard anything about the vernal pools. But I know everything I need to know about swamps wetlands lakes ponds and box miss leading title
Very cool! My daughter and I caught one a week or so ago! I got pics. I’m in E.Bridgewater Ma. ✌️
Where in East Bridgewater? I'd love to see some before the season ends
great video. Do you recall the air temp that day?
Good bye
hey guys this may seem like an obscure thing to chronicle but i have to say it's super helpful to me in my work and interests. these are underrated and unforgiving ecosystems but if people could just stand in them they'd understand how beautiful and important they are!! so thanks for the videos
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed the video!!
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa
@@toptengamermoments Gee thanks!
Cool!
Nice
Their was a bug crawling up your coat. Awesome video tho!
I saw a white thing in my spotted salamander tank so I thought they might have been trying to breed because I tried to make them breed so yeah
nice video!
can they live in cold water ?
I hope to make a vernal pool on my property. Found some local clam shrimp, and hope those can successfully survive! :)
awesome salamander vids
Amazing. does anyone have an idea what species of fairy shrimp they are?
What about killifish they're found all over the world and have a similar adaptation to the fairy shrimp
Killifish are a similar species to betta fish and have a seasonal and non-seasonal variety, on eBay you can find several species which you can get the eggs or live fish shipped to you through the mail.
It's very easy to hatch the eggs you just put them in water and they do the rest for you, you'll want to feed them micro food anything from decapsulated or freshly hatched fairy shrimp daphnia or other micro foods for fish fry. Then let the fish grow for at least 7 to 10 days to let them grow for the transfer into a tank that's 20 gallons or less so they can easily find the food.
What would you call a frog pond that came back most years until my grandfather build a mini Aqueduct from the hillside pouring water into the pond making it stay year round every year even during droughts?
what kind of camera?
whats with the cheesy over exaggerated voice?
Such a great idea to get under the ice with the GoPro. Can't really tell from the footage but guessing we're looking at winter fairy shrimp here? I've been breeding mammoth winter fairies for about 9 or so generations. Lovely animals.
i love these videos
We have spotted turtles around here Syracuse New York. I bought a few off the internet and ended up releasing them in the wild were I know other spotted turtles live.
Wait, why did you pay for them, if only to let them go? Is that WHY you bought them, to be set free? I guess that’s a noble move on your part, lol. And I mean, at least you researched… only issue I could see with the “re-release” - quoted that for a reason - of an animal is not knowing their EXACT subspecies, locality, or place of origin, unless the sellers/breeders or whoever actually have proof and are aware. The problem could be if they were carrying some bacteria, picked up from the place you got them; or they’re possibly carrying different pathogens, parasites, or some other foreign disease that the wild ones aren’t used to. At least not where you let yours free at. It’s like if I lived in…Oregon (I don’t) and relocated to New York. I’m basically bringing my “Pacific NW germs” to Hawaii, even though we’re all technically the same species (human). Different exposures in diff places. If that makes sense, I hope, lol…an extreme example or analogy is the colonial Europeans, coming to “settle” the new world, & exposing the actual FIRST Americans, native Taíno, Caribeños and many more peoples to cholera & smallpox. Look what happened with that. 🫤 Obviously this isn’t that extreme, but ya feel what I’m saying.. Wherever you got them from, and who the people were, their living conditions, etc. all play a part. Btw I’m not saying this is what happened, and I’m not saying anyone did anything wrong.. it’s just nature. That’s good you checked where they’re from, but too bad we can’t find these things out when we buy an animal! There are numerous places where spotted turtles are native. Different localities have different environments, and different set of parasites and stuff. But hopefully, we all good! 👍🏽✌🏼🐢
Are you still making new videos, I love them! I live in upstate New York and have always loved checking out vernal pools, even though I didn't know that's what they were called. Couple more months and the pools around here will be popping! 😃
Hey I've been making a videos for an environmental ed center to promote salamander crossing with extreme sports; check it out! instagram.com/p/BS1mY4Xh21k/?taken-by=siddhiactivism
Change the title for this video, and you will get more hits, etc. Start with the words (snapping turtles).
cool channel just subscribed
Thank you for subscribing. Glad you enjoy the channel.
stellar footage! what camera setup did you use for this?
My standard recommended setup is a GoPro camera of your choice (mine was a Hero 3+ Black) on a Lume Cube GoPro mount and two Lume Cubes (these are waterproof). I think for this video I used the Hero 3+ and an external (not waterproof) video light (Neewer CN-216).
This makes all the bits and pieces (sounds, egg masses, etc) all make sense. Thanks
Love your videos. Very informative and you get right in there so we can see what is going on.
Amazing footage, excellent educational video, thanks for taking the time to make and share that! I love vernal pools. 😁
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
VernalPoolChronicles what time should I go at night
VernalPoolChronicles to a vernal
I usually head out just past sunset in early spring and stay out until at least midnight unless there is nothing moving. Make sure you have permission to access the land from the landowner. And try to disturb as little as possible.
Awesome observations, beautiful Salamanders.
Thank you!
That's awesome!! Gotta love spring!!
