Roncar brought in a genuine JDM hero! His RX-7 is “FBO” spec (that’s “full bolt-on”) with a V-Mount intercooler from GReddy for power, a lowering Öhlins suspension kit for handling, and a twin tip exhaust for sound. But can it beat the challenger, a 2022 Hyundai Elantra N driven by Brian Scotto? It’s got a DCT transmission, paddle shifts, and a launch control mode: the best of modern performance design.

Hyundai’s been absolutely killing it with their N lineup.
blown engines piling up at every dealer and techs making tiktoks warning people not to buy them.... yup they are "killing" it lol
naw
Agreed, absolutely lovin' my '21 Sonata N-Line
I'll keep my 22 civic si with 21psi tune thanks. Looks better, handles better and will actually hold its value. Not sure which car is uglier. This elantra or the new plastic wrx.
@@computerdave06 this comment brought to you by HYUNDAI
that man knows how to launch his FD
I was thinking the same. I owned a '93FD and because I needed it in higher rpms for the power, I would always spin a lot, lol. It was a turtle under 4k rpm
They thought adding weight would slow down the pass, it only added traction to the launch.
@@tizodd6 yea he was trying to make sure he had boost building during his launches. I think you just have to spin it a bit but a good tire will make it okay.
He also has super sticky tires, a manual transmission, and is 500lbs lighter. In a car that is renowned for it's balance and handling. Nice work, nice rx7.
nah fr tho he was hitting that mf off the line with ease
RX7 is probably one of the mosy beautifully aged cars. Such a clean design
It really has aged well. I still think it's one of the most beautiful cars ever designed.
Looks like a c5 corvette.
@@TheReaper42069 Blasphemy!
same cannot be said for the cilantro
For real. Its such a timeless design
These normal races hit home lol
Love these types of races.
Normal my ass try finding an fd with 60,xxx miles
Fr bro let’s get some more races with cars in the 200-600hp range
Slow races are always more entertaining.
I hope to see more old vs new in This vs That. It shows how much progress cars have made, having a bit less power but more performance
Oh my god these "low hp" cars going at it is actually soo damn cool to watch!
Its probably more enjoying because you can hook the tires and it doesnt break half the time like the crazy 10.000hp ones
More fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow
@@Samus5164yeah but they drive the fast cars fast
You know why ?
Because we feel less poor then
Always great when the Hoonigan boys have a "friendly" race between each other. Love Ron, but especially love when *Scotto* gets behind the wheel for some races.
"Granny shifting not double clutching like it should" Nooooo.. Monica... Arrrriiight chill, chill .. Let me spill some true facts in here boys what we just witness above :
If this was a pink-slip race Scotto just lost a brand new Hyundai N with DSG and launch control -> to Ron in RX-7 that won with a manual gearbox without NOS to help launch it !
@@poplaurentiu4148 Scotto´s subconscious just couldn´t bring himself to humiliate his old hero.
And i love him for that! 😅👌
1:48 The way Hoonigan's editors edit the videos always get me 😂Don't stop hoonin' boys
Should do a this vs that special with the whole hoonigan team doing a tournament style race, whoever wins gets a trophy or something.
Who has the fastest daily driver? Besides Vinny lol
@@killeralltires nah they pull up with their fastest cars or something similar with power, I know they have a bunch of cars 😂
Ron's level of BS of that 280hp figure is awesome 😂
hey man that's at the wheels... probably 😅
@@RonzarOneThe car is awesome either way. I just love the drag race power banter 🤣. You launched that thing hard as hell though, massive props
Right 😂. Had to be right over 3
100%, no way in hell he needs a upgraded fuel pump for that since the stock one can top out at 300whp. let him run a FBO EN
That RX-7 would be a rocket w 280 at the wheels lol
Ron’s FD is legit exactly how I want mine one day. Fitment and colour combos are iconic
FD is one of the greatest production car bodies from Japan of all time. Balls so warm.
The Elantra N did surprisingly well for a stock DCT, from a dig, against a FBO, tuned, RX7 with better off the line traction. Would have been nice to see a roll w NGS used.
Remember rotaries suck at low rpm and launches but this still got it.
@@Martin4zno shit it’s stock vs moded
a roll wouldnt help it rotaries are bad in low rpm giving it some rpms to start with will increase the gap heavy against a stock elantra N since the rx7 will hit powerband way faster
@@youcangetsum6871 both stock, elantra n would decimate it no doubrx7 would be left in the dust
@@josephdias5859 ngs would help a lot cause it gives torque immediately almost i think it helps to eliminate the turbo lag
Monica!! Ive legit been watching this series from the start waiting for this exact moment. Thanks Ron. My life is now complete. Lets go home boys
Bro same!!
If he didn’t yell MONICA I would have been disappointed and had to rethink Hoonigan loyalty lmao
It's 2023 and that FD is as gorgeous as ever
It’s so nice to see everyone keeping the happy attitudes even though kens not they’re thank you guys for keeping his legacy going
As much as I LOVE FDs, they're so elegant and graceful, FBO with port should be rocking like 300-330whp or something.
Get that Elantra N a 4in Intake, TIP, Exhaust/DP/GPF Delete and a good tune and bring it back!
Hell, Intake, TIP and a good tune will make it 340 crank and I honestly think with the DCT it'll edge the FD at that alone.
(I know that's not what the vid is about, but a little closer on the power would've been nice haha)
Still great vid! Loved it.
😁
So refreshing to see someone who opts for lighter, smaller rims and opts for handling over crazy power. It's rare to see a real racer in the car community these days
aint gonna lie but this is the first time in a LONG time I actually watched the breakdown of the cars without skipping
I like how y'all brought the editing style back to how this vs that was first filmed. Continuous take, couple micro cuts here and there and some broll. Has more personality this way. Feels like y'all were just trying to shoot content while not really caring much about the end product with the most recent stuff y'all were doing. Thanks for throwing it back shreditors
i love the hoonigan vs hoonigan races. its good to see your cars that actually work
I was definitely going for the FD!! This match up was a good one!!
Even the elantra had 1000hp, I'm still gonna pick that FD. Such a cool car
Exactly. I'm happy Hyundai are willing to make sporty cars for us guys trying to avoid electric cars, but no denying that the FD beats the Elantra N every day of the week. Ron launched that thing hard it and it shows. I bet against it both runs and it won. I still admire Hyundai tho for making N cars in a world getting filled with crappy electric cars.
Of course its not All about power 🙂
@@anasevi9456 They're really for markets where you can only feasibly own one car where it has to get groceries, fit four passengers for a road trip, and you want it to be fun, but you don't want a Mk7 or Mk8 Golf R/GTI.
@@anasevi9456 i don't know if they even really need AWD now with the limited slip diffs they come with
From my own experience of a CTR, EN and WRX, the latter actually handles the worst out of the bunch. It somehow understeers more than the two FWD options
@@Courtesyflush52 all depends on the awd setup of course, just like how gtrs are setup
Thats a gorgeous RX7. Congrats Ron!
This is one of my favorite channels of ALL TIME! Keep the races coming Hoonigan crew!
So glad I have something to backup the giant hoonigan decal on the back of my EN. Rock on, nice ride Scotto.
Definitely needs a lap 3 tune for the Elantra N!!!!!!!!!! It’s insane trust me!
We gotta see more normal car races. These are fun.
Thanks for bringing back the build interviews
Editors are having WAY too much fun and I love it!!
Please do this more often!!
Nothing better than seeing some good drag racing between every day hard working middle class folks that have big dreams but little budget! Love seeing these daily drivers mild built cars duking it out!!
That FD is looking like Proper Time Capsule..Love it..👍🏽🏁
literally one of my favorite videos on this vs that!
This was a good one, liking the banter
Gary gave the the rx7 more grip on that take off
That "Monica!" Was perfect was thinking the same thing haha
Yo Ron and Vin really are my inspirations! They really be speccing their cars like I would 🥺
Happy birthday, Ron 😉
Love that FD! Almost exactly how I would “build” one. Simple, clean, mostly stock.
13:58 This moment is gold
Great video, keep it up!👍
That RX& set up is amazing. Looks great!
My favorite car (RX7) vs the one I own (EN) 🤣regardless +1 passenger, stock weight of EN is what like close to 3.3k lb vs. 2.4klb so cant beat weight.. yeah the timing of the NGS would've helped but still that variable, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this 😁
Those launches by Ron are 🔥
Put a smile on my face 🙂
Sheesh the B-Roll shots have improved so much compared to the earlier this vs that episodes
I've had my FD for 26 years. I have put 180,00 mile son it. Still love it. It's a permanent classic.
Hey guys, I have a 93 RX7 with a stock LS1 in it I would love to race the red FD I think it would be cool to see how they would stack up my car made 290 on a Dyno should be a close race 🤘🏻
I would love to see that
Rotary FD vs LS1 FD 🙌 My bet's on the LS1 😂
Dobra robota Ron!
That 30 year old (30 YEAR-OLD) car looks and runs beautifully. Rotaries move from 1000 to 8000 rpm so fast, you could get whiplash. Fantastic race!!!
That's such a clean FD, it's really nice to see a car like that treated with respect for the period, it looks, sounds and runs the part and would make a great daily driver but can clearly pull when it needs to.
Love the lower hp races but I'm shocked it was as close as it was. "280" vs 276 is the biggest troll 😂😂😂😂
That Elantra N is a hell of a car to be completely stock. I knew once i saw the power to weight ratio it was over but none the less love to see it.
too be fair ron is a horrible driver. I'm confident I would've won if I was driving.
@@en_noah4615 yeah I felt like he was doing somewrong to be honest. Plus I also think they should have went from a roll after that first race. No wheel hop but much spin. Just wasn't hooking up.
@@michaelwilburn1001 I’m 99% sure he didn’t have octane learning which would mean the car was not at full power. And no launch control is a huge disadvantage. My 0-60 with no LC is 5.8. With LC my best was 4.9
go look at the i30 N which is even better. but for what ever reason they wont sell it in the US. once again US never gets the good car
@@en_noah4615 Yeah probably didn't have the Octane learning. Hate it but it's a necessary evil. That 15 psi limit is awful. They may not know about it at all. Tbh. I'd like to see the Elantra N come back for another race. I've actually been able to get a 4.8 with lc.
I wish i could go to one if these races but ik for a fact my sonata nline will dog on the Elantra n but i love u guys keep up the good work i love every vid yall do ❤️💯🙏
These are the kind of matchups I love to see
Love the "280hp" 😅 that's just trolling it level 11🥰
Right? Stock they claim 276hp, but all the Japanese auto makers had that agreement not to make anything over 276hp, but in reality most of them were pushing 300hp stock, if not a bit more.
@@camaro25 US spec supposedly a bit lower, maybe had more emission crap
Power to weight at its finest. Enjoyed this one a lot! Love the back and fourth banter lol
Great run Ron
I'd like to see a 500SL battle of the same era, with the RX-7
Awesome!!!, but a 1.3L 3rotor???? There is a typo in the specs😉
0:27
Rob Dahm inspired maybe?? 😜
They had a typo with the Elantra too it has an 8 speed dual clutch not a 6 speed. Mistakes happen tho.
Them ballast bois added +20 points to traction lol
Has anyone noticed that the races with just them as the guests always make the best videos?
Was the hyundai octane learned? Either way FIRE VIDEO lmk if you wanna race my kona 😉 LOL
Nice, fresh vid
Nice to see the good guys win.
I love Ron's FD, its just so perfect
Lets go! with the stockish races on fire
The EN is a fenomenal car for the price. I have a 6 mt 22 EN and I'll be ripping through twisties like there's no tomorrow. The EN shines at a track (not a drag strip). I get smoke by faster cars on straights at times but as soon as a curvy road pops up, well is a different story👌.
ran it on a backroad with a EN while i was in my S4. i couldn’t hang thru the corners. as soon as the straights open up i could overtake easily
Yes, let him put the same mods on the EN as the RX7 had then we will see.
@mikescherrer4923 yup, that's exactly what I do. Also race mopeds ALL the time lol 😆 😂 🤣
@@geraldlafleur7776the Hyundai will always be slower
@@ThorOdinson-zc2kq don’t be so sure. I have seen a lot of differences between stock vehicles, some claim 1/4 mi times in the high 12s.
That RX7 gotta be making WAY more than 280hp to pull on the EN like that
😂not really, it’s a great little hatch but I smoke my friends N 130 with ease in my NA RX8 . Rotaries just don’t play by the rules
Nice, definitely want to get into tracking one day
Love this video and I definitely give the edge to the thousand pound lighter, slightly tuned FD! But i got a ride along in that exact Hyundai at last years Gridlife Midwest Fest with IMSA driver Taylor Hagler in the driver's seat and mu equally tubby buddy in the back seat for a few laps around Gingerman raceway. That Hyundai is no joke. It might not be a giant killer but it is LEGIT!!!
Good race, put those 2 on the track tho lol or do a roll race, totally diff results I bet
Ron: here's my completely stock rx7
Also Ron: it has an exhaust
And a giant intercooler and no doubt more boost.
Imma have to hunt down this Ron fellow when I get my FD on the road. I'm also up here in Utah so it'd be great to get together with some other FD owners.
Go on lads, another sick one from the main hoons
I’ve never been this early before 😮
Ron is representing the Dorito community jajajaj Rob Dahm is smiling right now hahahah
I am sure is as I am also
Great episode.
Great video, just a quick querie. Did hoonigans views go up after introducing drum and bass ? Glad they came to the dark side 😂
Great to see an N car up on here, such a fun race!
If the N line had some rwd or awd in the line up it would be amazing
Love the clean look of the RX7! Especially in Red!!! Sweet!!
Love the slow races. Need a s2000 one!
race starts at 11:50
That’s an 8-speed on the Elantra…
Way to go Ron nice work
Ron screaming "MONICA," killed me!
hallo from greece
와 아반떼n이다!!
More of these types of races plz
Editor is wild, mad talented
The 280hp could be accurate as the FD weighs like 2400lbs or something. The Elantra is like 3400lbs.
3400? try 3200.
FD should be around 2,750 with half a tank of fuel. A lighter exhaust and lightweight battery and it's very easy to get them under 2,700 lbs.
@@verdict1163 its a touring not r1 fd. So its a little over 2800 stock
@@davidcraig7771 You're right, I was quoting base/R1 weight. I didn't know Tourings were so much heavier than R1/R2s. My car is a near stock R1 and it weighs 2,675 with half a tank of fuel.
Curious if they did octane learning in the EN before the races.
I like everything about Ron's RX-7 minus those air filters. Maybe it's just I'm tired of extracting them from peoples intake plenums.... idunno. They look cool tho.
Win or lose the fd takes my heart ❤️... that thing is the definition of clean and love the period correct/ subtle mods.
NGL Hyundai has been killing it with these cars, didn't even know they had a DCT and the scramble button is kind of dope. Call back to the early 2000s tuning era
This was a fun race very cool
Great driving, roncar
You guys should do a new series where you get a fast car and a slow car and you give the slow car a really big advantage and call it chase is a race or something like that ex you get like a 2000 hp car and pair it up with a 300 hp car. It would be cool seeing the fast car chasing down the slow car
I didn't think the rx7 was going to take it! I do like all those exhaust modes on the N though, that is cool!
These Normal or factory as close as you can get are the best!!!! Please find more of these cars to run down the strip.
I had a FD RX7 and just like you boys, there were many embarrassed Nissan, and Porsche drivers that I smoked with that car, stock. Rotaries have always been underestimated, and whenever they kicked butt on the track, the racing series would always add a weight penalty, and then STILL lose to the rotaries, with the rotaries winning countless IMSA and SCCA Championships, RX8 also won an IMSA championship. . . So when the rotary Mazda 767 beat the best from Porsche, Jaguar, Peugeot, Mercedes at LeMans, they banned the rotary from the top LeMans class forever. I am grinning from ear to ear here. FYI, i have owned seven rotary Mazdas, one RX-3, two RX-4; all three generations of RX7 including my Racing Beat-built Race RX7 that did 185mph on the banking at Pocono. And my 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 with performance mods that is worth 50% more now than what I paid for it back in 2008. Cheers
Them launches damn 💪🏽
