Old school truckers in the past would put a little gas in the tank in extreme cold conditions to keep the diesel from gelling. Now there are products that will do it. Definitely worth it because all that cranking on a cold engine is a lot of wear. I’d also be thinking about a block heater. My Cummins 450 has one and fires right up in sub zero.
There is an arctic heater kit for stock Humvees, check your glow plugs, also try to mix up diesel with pure kerosene like 60 to 38% and add 2% of mineral oil, but do that while its warm (that would make freezing temperature close to -25 C and oil will prevent gaskets from drying out) - that's the trick used on far north in Siberia and etc.
In Middle Europe and Germany we use *Winter-Diesel, in the higher areas/hills and / or Easter European countries (sometimes Minus -25/-30-Grad-Celsius) - are experienced operators using- -mixing +- 5%-Gas-oil in to diesel-tank; so I learned from older Camerads WW2-soldiers - have been Russian- war. Our Army-Bundeswehr to be sure (winterDiesel or not) is also same doing, as well 99.9 % prepared. Same I did w/M1009- 6,2L-Diesel, never had had Problems with Minus -22-Grad-Celsius, last Winter. Thank You for Attention, Greetings fro Germany,

another solution is - make fire under the engine block, what used by Army Soldiers in winter
war -II, in Russia.
I bet that starter is about done or about ready to catch fire, good God man! I have a 1998 and I NEVER crank mine that long, nor would I ever have to.
the humbles starters are built different man. Im in Alaska, and I have yet to replace a starter do to it getting burnt
I have a 6.2 diesel in an m1009 it starts immediately no matter how cold it is here when it has good glow plugs
Glow plug time.
Had good glow plugs just gelled up fule
@@pgarceau24 Adding fuel additive sure is tough
Last week here in jersey it hit -5°F. My motorcycle almost didn't start and i was scared id be stranded :( Thank goodnes for efi!
Might need to put some Howe’s Diesel Treat in the tank to make sure the fuel isn’t gelling up.

RIP starter
the starter got so hot it warmed the block enough to finally crank up. 😂😂
now that's some serious cranking. nice
NJFordPops08005 24 volts of power and some good batteries is all it take

Cold start
It takes a while for a man to get that one started.
Long crankins doesn't kill the starter engine ?
Nope, not for a diesel
