Your videos are so enjoyable - for me, a comforting mix of downeast (Prairie Home Companion, Bert & I, a dash of SCTV's Bob & Doug McKenzie) + gen x sensibilities & dry humor - so comforting and life-affirming (currently writing from the depth of a trauma depression hole) - - is that a light ahead? Hark! Maire has escaped hers! - perhaps there's hope for us - - any tips on how you did it? My darkness has laid me so low that after someone, trying to be helpful, dusted my serger with the vacuum hose attachment, accidentally de-threaded it, I haven't been able to get the gumption to go through...the adventure of...rethreading it (this was months ago). I have been missing your sewing, arts & crafts, adventures video essay blends. Thanks for coming back. Grief is the worst kind of all holes - someone once told me Nothing feels right or makes sense or is easy to do, or is easy to care to do, for at least a year after loss (for me, primary loved ones), even breathing, sometimes seems too arduous - keep this in mind along with ample grace, leeway for whenever one thinks one should be any way different than one is, in the moment one is in, and go toward comfort when able. Take it one day at a time. Every day is a new day with new challenges, even if it feels like you're hiking the same path over and over. It took a couple of months before I could even look at a sewing machine. Now...I'm sorting through Mum's stuff, organizing it for myself or putting it aside for others, and it's like a part of her is there. Quirks of her personality in the way she organized things make me smile - and I'd be lying if I said I didn't have little conversations with her. Now going to the sewing machine is becoming a way to deal with all the OTHER problems life throws at me...and that's a really nice change. We can do this. 💕
@@MaireColclough We can, indeed. Thanks for sharing what helps you. It's so devastating/beautiful/interesting/hard going through Mom's things. I'm really glad for voicemail - I went through, found all of my mom's to me and downloaded (and copied ones I had on a old answering machine) them as mp3 files. Found ones she referenced my siblings in and sent them copies. Obv. not same as having her here, but when we just need to hear her voice, her voice saying our names, I'm glad we live in The Future so I could do that. Huzzah, for nice changes, discovering quirks, and realizing how many of our own quirks stem from, or are, hers, continuing to live within us...I often wonder what do I do that my mom's mom's mom's mom's+++ did; the life threads that continue, no matter what different yarn, fabric, thing it becomes,, there's always that strong line running right on through
I love the alterations you made :) While it's not "historical" in shape I often love that 'secret history' by starting historical and making it work for you and your modern life.
I recently saw a meme espousing the “Studio Ghibli aesthetic” I try to stay less “Howl’s Moving Castle” and more “Kiki’s Delivery Service” but . . . I was so confused! I saw the super-cute blouse on Instagram and on Plus Sized Historical and I remember “so cute!!” And then you did the first reveal and I was like “that is not as cute as what I remember?” But I kept watching and indeed! It is super cute and very Jennifer Connelly (now if I could find that hair clip she wears. I had one just like it a long, long time ago . . . .)
I've been meaning to do a re-watch of the movie, so I'll have to watch for the hair clip. But yes...it was certainly a process to get to the final dress! 😄
Love those kind blouses! A pirate shirt! My love started with the 3 Musketeers 😉 I enjoyed your hacks to make it your style! 💖 I watched the vest video first lol so it looks great too. Your Mom would be so happy that you chose some colour for her 💟 Wishing you the best of course. See if you can find the frosted tape then you can write on it when you make your patterns. When cutting with shears make as large a cut as you can as this is better for your scissors ✂️ to keep them sharp longer. Having said all that my favorite part of your videos is your witty repartee 😁💗
No matter what you’re working on I always get both inspired and generally happy after watching. It’s always thoughtful, clever, funny and suitably quirky. I applaud your courage for picking a multicoloured pattern. My “summer dress” fabric ended up being a very lovely black. One time I decided to go completely wild and came home with black fabric with tiny white polka dots.
Regarding the bodice block concept from Closet Historian, I ended up getting a custom block from Pattern Lab London online as my starting point. I have odd measurements compared to most blocks, so it was a great option for me and my measurments. You can even choose how much ease to put in the block. I moved the darts to Bianca's preferred locations, and found a tutorial to get rid of the shoulder dart in the back bodice piece. I still had to tweak it slightly, and because my biceps are proportionally much larger than my body and apparently my shoulders are odd, the sleeve cap still doesn't fit how I'd like it to. However, it really was worth it and I've loved how easy it is to make things that actually fit my body now.
I've been planning on buying that blouse for an actual historical thingie, so it's good to know that it will also be good for something I'm more likely to wear to on a regular basis. I automatically add 3-4 inches to the length of shirts (#LongTorsoProblems) but I really like your fix.
So glad to see you on here again. Was concerned but didn't want to be intrusive. Glad you are doing better. The blouse is absolutely lovely. I really like the changes you made to it to fix it. The vest looks badass! Looking forward to that one. In the meantime, hope you are taking care of yourself and finding joy where you can.

Yay, welcome back. I adore the fabric and love how the blouse turned out in the end. I have a similar type of colourful fabric with butterflies on it. Its just sat in the stash currently as there isn't that much of it. back to my fabric choice for the secret pants (black) for Whitby goth weekend in 5 weeks. eeek
Gorgeous! You really have amazing skill! You knew exactly what to do to make the blouse perfectly suited to you! 13:52 The camera feels your pain about the dust😂 I almost died laughing that timing was so perfect 🤣🤣🤣 although I guess I was already primed because of little David Bowie
The colours are awesome on you. Great job altering a pattern to better suit your style. I made a dress with similarly gigantic sleeves but I'm going to cut off the cuffs and try shirring the ends. I think there is a huge issue with pattern grading for plus sizes in many pattern companies. Some details don't need to be made so much bigger!
I've had my eye on this blouse style for while but opted for the Folkwear Missouri River Boatman's Shirt instead. I like the changes you made to the pattern to make it more for you.
Please check out Bootstrap Patterns, they can make a bodice pattern that will fit your body for an very economical price. Also, thanks for this video. I recently purchased this pattern, would love to have this blouse,, but was afr8iad to give to a try. Believe it or not, your video was VET helpful. I think I am now brave enough to give it a try. Bless you, Aires Waden. 🙂
Yay! It's the blouse I like so much in your instagram post! And I'd REALLY like to see your remake of Labyrinth! The ortiginal is on my frequent-rewatch list and the album is often playing in my sewing room.
I found that before I could make a bodice block I needed to get into bra making first. I discovered I'm a different size horizontally and vertically, so I've been making incremental adjustments to my hacked pattern. Version 9 was not only wearable but the most comfortable bra I've ever worn. Version 10 hopefully the last, but I want to try a second (more structural and supportive) pattern before I move on to the bodice block. Step 1 of the bodice block process is putting on a well fitting bra. Step 1 of most bra drafting processes is start with your bodice block. I suggest starting with bra patterns that measure bcd or hh, not commercial sizes.
I love this with your alterations! Ive been on the hunt for a vest for this exact look lol 😊 As for bodice blocking, I actually have Butterick B5628 which goes all the way up to a US dress size 32 and it’s basically a full sheath dress pattern. I haven’t done it yet but the plan is to basically mock it up and make alterations until I have a personal block (which is why I haven’t done it cause I hate the mock-up process lol). Idk if that’s something that might be helpful for you too, personally I find it easier to alter an existing plus pattern than try to figure out pattern drafting outside of standard sizes
I'm...considering learning how to draft from measurements. Mostly because I have so many things to compensate for (bus size, high/long waisted, etc). That said, I wish you well with the Butterick block! Let me know how it goes! 😃
@@MaireColclough you are definitely a braver soul than I but I’d definitely love to see it if you get it worked out, I’ve found that scaling patterns gets real wonky when you’re going for larger sizes so I’m curious if drafting from measurements poses any similar issues
@@MaireColclough My first bodice block was drafted from the instructions I found from a pattern designer lady from Quebec (whose name I'm totally blocking on). I... survived. Lockdown, what else did I have to do. I can't remember how many multiples I went through because the original 3 draft attempts were so very wonky. Apparently you can base your bodice block off of a well fitting shirt pattern with a simplified sleeve. So if you've got a basic pattern you've already done, you're really most of the way there. Bring it together to have the darts land where you want and the fabric doing a good job skimming the body and you have an Official Block (TM). I love your dry and nerdy humor. And I like the more muted, a little faded colors, it's a happy accident. I think you're an autumn person like me, too bright colors near the face are not good, or if you really want to wear a fire red t-shirt, then break it with a scarf. And things that don't fit are made to fit. You did it very well, and with the vest it' even better.

Some good news from the neighbourhood! The truck-nut-wannabe's have been evicted from St. Bridget's for not paying their rent. Little William, the Burger King crown & rubber yellow gloves guy, is on the hook for 50K$ in legal fees of the owner. He's also facing some lawsuits back in London, where he stiffed a bunch of brides on their wedding photos and pictures. Not... a smart move. Dude's annoyed and harassed a whole darn city and now he has to face down a flock of Bridezillas flying in perfect b***ch formation. Karma, she works fast these days... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
I've considered asking the Sister-in-Law for a bunch more of the stickers so I can give them out to friends and patrons. Family favourites, so far, are "Gordon the Good Ghost" and a very rudimentary fish labelled "Brad Pitt". I have no idea what the kid was thinking, but the lack of context was definitely part of the fun 😄 I'm glad the disruptive elements are moving along and facing consequences. I was honestly concerned they wanted to turn it into a Waco situation. Instead the building created by the Irish men who built the canal still stands. Thank everything... Actually, it is a bit historical. It shares a lot of features with the swedish "skördesärk" (harvest dress) also called rynksärk (if you want to search it), the skirt would just had to have been full length. I'm so sorry for your loss.
If your thinking I came for the pretty fabric think again. I came for the snark and as always you did not disappoint. Legend was my favorite movie. I have seen both versions. Tom Cruz meh, Tim Curry as darkness, yeah he nailed has role. Mia Sara as princess Lilly lived her dress. Loved her in. Ferris Buller's day off. Rudely Scott awesome cinematography. For me, i wanted to be running around in Hyde Park with unicorns. I don't care if they were only horses with fake horns, I wanted the unicorns. Still do only with my own whimsy dress. But sadly with 5 kids two of which are moody hormonal teenagers, my house looks like it could belong to the Tattowien Sand Crawler. If you count the Xbox 36o fashioned to look like R2D2 as a d good, then I can talk about the droid in the corner too. I do love how that came out. I like the remake so much better. I always shied away from that specific pattern because it was worried about looking like I was wearing a tent. My arms might have long enough for the sleeves since that gas always been an issue. My plants and sieves not being long enough. The joys of being tall 😒 but I do love how yours came out. When I saw the fabric I said no way. But I'm sold now. Maybe I should give batik a try.
@@MaireColclough after watching Bernadette Banner make the 10 gore princess skirt, broke and made one from some batik from my stash. Only stupid me couldn't find her hooks and eyed and decided I wanted to wear it for a family outing next day and decided to put a zipper in in the middle of the night. In my sleep deprivation I could remember for the life of me how to install a zipper. I hand basted it in and sewed it down that way. Next day my 14 yr old daughter walks in and finds said hooks and eyes🤦🏼♀️ but batik for the win 😁
I really like the way this turned out. The first reveal seemed...fine? I guess? Also, if there are any more mispelled words, I'm sorry evidently my fingers didn't want to behave today. I hope your day is going ok.
Oh my! This is great! Thank you for ALL of the steps. With your assets, yes, assets... (I know women who would kill for your bosoms) This looks like a winner, both comfort and style wise! Am I going to give it a go....? NEVER!!!!! But if I did, I would watch this clip again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Lovely video and I like the shirt too!.
"The dog, goblin, three Muppets comment cracked me up"
Absolutely love the final version of that blouse - what a fabulous fix!
Thank you! 😊
I love this fabric! I like the the elastic on the sleeves. I was worried about gaping, so I like sewing up the front. A skirt or ruffle is what I was thinking, too. So, great blouse that I wish I could have. ☺️
I found/find this very helpful.
...I do go on. This shirt looks like it was meant to be the form it ended in, and so comfy flow-y, breezy. Delight.
Huzzah, for nice changes, discovering quirks, and realizing how many of our own quirks stem from, or are, hers, continuing to live within us...I often wonder what do I do that my mom's mom's mom's mom's+++ did; the life threads that continue, no matter what different yarn, fabric, thing it becomes,, there's always that strong line running right on through
Oh, that's so cute!!!! The sleeve ruffle! The shirt skirt! The fabric! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! 😊
I love the alterations you made :) While it's not "historical" in shape I often love that 'secret history' by starting historical and making it work for you and your modern life.
"Secret History" is a great way to look at it! 😀
Love how you modified the blouse. I have like 6 yards of nice linen I should probably make a "pirate" shirt out of someday. :)
6 yards! That's enough for a full dress 😉
I love the fabric and the final shirt!!! I got to say the sleeves might be my favorite part!!!
I'm a big fan of the sleeves. And using the elastic casing has made them so versatile 😃
Some day you'll discover grey and folks will think you've gone completely off the rails. 😉
I like me a good black shirt with white polka dots 😃
I'll have to remember Pattern Lab London, just in case 😃
Beautifully done, M'Lady! I love how you made it into what YOU wanted. ...which I think is more "HA" than what people think.
Thank you so much! 💕😃
I've been planning on buying that blouse for an actual historical thingie, so it's good to know that it will also be good for something I'm more likely to wear to on a regular basis. I automatically add 3-4 inches to the length of shirts (#LongTorsoProblems) but I really like your fix.
That fabric is SO cute and makes the blouse look all light and floofy.
It's a little heavier than I thought, but that's a good thing...because I don't think I can fit these sleeves in a standard sweater... 😄
@@MaireColclough oof I can imagine.
A good excuse to make/get an equally oversized fluffy sweater? 🤔
@@linr8260 ...or appropriately-80s sweater-vest... 😁
Thank you Crystil! The vest was DEFINITELY an adventure all its own...I think you'll enjoy it 😁💕
Love it! Definitely a great save that works great. I completely understand I don’t do short blouses either.
Nice to see you back and hopefully feeling better
Day by day, right? 💕
The final garment is excellent!
I'm sure enjoying it 😉
That’s a great blouse. Great instruction on how to remake the first one. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. ❤️🇨🇦
Sweet. The second finished blouse looks wonderful. Love love love the sleeve poof. It's lovely to see you. Take care.
Thank you Nancy! It's so comfy, I'm wearing it this morning whilst I enjoy a hot cup of tea. Cozy times. 💕
@@MaireColclough Perfect weight for yesterday's temps. Might need a bit of a sweater today, though, it's downright windy/chilly out there this morning.

Your modifications made it super cute. Love it!
Thank you so much, Sherri! 💕😊
Yay, welcome back.
I adore the fabric and love how the blouse turned out in the end. I have a similar type of colourful fabric with butterflies on it. Its just sat in the stash currently as there isn't that much of it.
back to my fabric choice for the secret pants (black) for Whitby goth weekend in 5 weeks. eeek
That's a short timeline! I hope you have fun at Whitby! 😃
Gorgeous! You really have amazing skill! You knew exactly what to do to make the blouse perfectly suited to you!
13:52 The camera feels your pain about the dust😂 I almost died laughing that timing was so perfect 🤣🤣🤣 although I guess I was already primed because of little David Bowie
The camera often feels my pain...Just like me, it has issues focusing 😂
Oh i love the final look!!! You did awesome :) welcome back!
Thank you so much!!
Ooo...shirring! I'd love to see how that looks 😃
Thank you for the suggestion on the bodice block! Glad I could be of any help with the pattern 😃
You look adorable in your new shirt! Also. I am so sorry for your loss.
Thank you Corey 💕💕
Love the end result, and the process to get there... also, happy to see you back on youtube!
Thank you! 😃
So glad to see you put up a new video! I finally had time to watch it, and I think you made a rocking shirt. It really looks good on you. :)
Missed you. Welcome back. Your blouse looks excellent. Especially with the vest. And I also desperately wanted to dress like Sarah when growing up.
Oh thank you! 😃
Love the fix. It's very sixties and very charming.
It *is* a little 60's in a way...

Thank you so much! 😃
Very awesome. Excellent blouse
Great save!
Lovelly blouse, it looks nice on you. Love the look with the vest!
Thank you so much! 😃
I think the most historically accurate thing you could make is something that is functional and looks the way you want it to.
I think I managed to score a 2/2 on that one then 😃
Yay! It's the blouse I like so much in your instagram post!
And I'd REALLY like to see your remake of Labyrinth! The ortiginal is on my frequent-rewatch list and the album is often playing in my sewing room.
It's one of my comfort-view movies too 😊
PERFECTION, and double perfection with the vest!!!!!
Thank you! 😃
Really pretty - the color looks nice on you!
Thank you! 😃
Sounds like quite the catch-22...
I do need well-fitting bras, though... 🤔
Frustration tolerance required for the incremental adjustment route.
@@DeniseSkidmore That could either be vastly entertaining...or give me a complete meltdown. 🤔
@@MaireColclough "you shall reap a harvest if you do not give up"
It's so pretty and cheerful !!!! I love it !
Thank you! 😊
I love this with your alterations! Ive been on the hunt for a vest for this exact look lol 😊
As for bodice blocking, I actually have Butterick B5628 which goes all the way up to a US dress size 32 and it’s basically a full sheath dress pattern.
@@theoriginalnik I've attempted it once with a set of directions from the...70's, I think? I'll have to see if I can improve on it any :)
Not that I've really played with my block yet...
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
@@stevezytveld6585 I'm not really all that confident in the simple block blouses I've played with...but I'm getting a little more confident that with enough motivation, designing my own block is eventual 😉

The Goblin King won't take my brother. I tried. Cute blouse.
He's a choosy old goat, isn't he? 😉
Super cute! Love and hugs 💕
Thank you! 🤗
Thank you! Beyond the Labyrinth reference, the vest does a great job of breaking up the pattern so it's not overwhelming 😉
Looks gorgeous on you!
Thank you! 😃
It looks great! wonderful save 😊
Thank you! 😊
You mean there's an alternative to living in a Tatooine sand crawler? Surely you jest... Isn't B. Banners studio just a collective hallucination we came up with during lockdown... how the hell is a body suppose to control the mid project chaos...
The finished shirt is lovely. Good for you for going for some colour. Well. Done. Something similar would be lovely in a A-line style tunic shirt... make it Medieval-ish and you got a video.
Your nephews stickers are beautiful. Perfect for a portable chess board cardboard tube, that way you can bring him along to a pub on a Sunday afternoon. Don't be afraid to use them; can always print more. Maybe a few on the pole holding up the basket net at the local park... go complete gorilla Ottawa-style artistical street art on those puppies.
Sloppy hugs from back east, Kiddo.
Hey!
I have no idea what the kid was thinking, but the lack of context was definitely part of the fun 😄
I'm glad the disruptive elements are moving along and facing consequences. I hope Steve is feeling much better after his dust-up during the fracas! 💕
@@MaireColclough Part of the love for kiddo art is the magic mystery of "what was going through their head"... they are perfection. Tag the neighbourhood. Get her to send you the files. There used to be a couple of guys in T-dot who made vinyl stickers for a decent price.
And yes - hear, here for consequences to the Occupiers crowd. One of our neighbours was part of the "volunteer security" force who were sleeping on air mattresses in the basement of the church. I was honestly concerned they wanted to turn it into a Waco situation. Instead the building created by the Irish men who built the canal still stands. Thank everything...
You want a side trip into the strange - look up "tartarian architecture". It's what the who-whose kept referring to when they talked about the building. Off the hook nutbar. Buh-bye, please let the door hit ya on the way out, Felicia, level of nut.

Actually, it is a bit historical. It shares a lot of features with the swedish "skördesärk" (harvest dress) also called rynksärk (if you want to search it), the skirt would just had to have been full length.

I';d definitely give both batik and the pattern a try. Particularly with modifications!

@@MaireColclough after watching Bernadette Banner make the 10 gore princess skirt, broke and made one from some batik from my stash.
