I'd take the M5 Com. The M8 has a better interior and a few additional features the M5 doesn't but they are wants not needs. To match the practicality of the M5 you need a M8 Gran Coupe and that's a bit on the large side. A M5 comp can be had for just over £60k on auto trader and that’s a real performance bargain.
So the M8 handles slightly better due to the shorter wheelbase, but I understand the Gran Coupe version is a bit longer than even the M5.. so I wonder how the handling on that will compare to both the ‘regular’ M8 and the M5.
Hey 🤙🏻 What about the engine? Is the s63 V8 Engine in both cars reliable? How much oil does it take? Can you recommend to buy one below 60000 miles or do you think they are cars which can be used until the typically three year leasing is over and then get rid off? Good video :-) would be nice if you could share your opinion. 😉
The M8 is an M6 really, it’s just been rebranded to an 8 series. We would always recommend an ECU tune over a piggyback. And an exhaust itself will add little but Catless Downpipes will remove the restriction.
whats your opinion on the launch control of these two cars ? i remember Joe having trouble launching the M5 on carwow. also is the M5 competition much better than the standard M5 ? when prices drop to a reasonable amount in a few years and i trade in my M240i will the cheaper standard M5 be ok to modify power on, or is the more powerful M5 comp a better platform to start with ?
Okay I've owned the M8 comp (coupe) the launch control system is amazing. Just traded the M8 competition for a M5 competition LCI. The launch control definitely seems the same. Maybe the pre lci had a different launch control software

love the M8, tempted to buy a Grand coupe M8 after my M5 f90. You should defiantly change the grill on your M5, if i recal your M5 is not the competition model hence its chrome. I agree about the M8 wheels i love them

Agree with that, although alot of these cars behind closed doors are alot cheaper then bmw make u believe.. the "book" invoice sheet on my m6 competition bang olufsen carbon ceramics etc etc etc when i bought in 2017 was over 122k hell did i pay anything close to that lol.. whatever they say take about 30 grand off in contributions and discount. Obviously the cheaper the model the less discount but you get what i mean.
Sorry think the F90 M5 is the most boring looking M5 to date. Every time I see one on the road I genuinely struggle to tell it apart from a specced up 5 series M sport. No arches, no flares or other aggressive cues to differentiate it. I'm a BMW fan through and through but looks wise the RS6 is more on the money.
M5 comp is the best in terms of value for money. Very similar performance , interior technically identical. If only you can justify the additional 30-40k for the m8 👍
They both have the same drive train and performance. Given the significant price difference, the M5 is a bargain. I also dont feel that the M8's looks alone would sway me to part with extra 30-40k USD. M5 all day long!

We have no issues launching our M5 if you watch our VMAX videos. And yes the M5 is meant to be subtle for a supersaloon (we have made ours less subtle) .

If you look at the steering wheel in the new amg’s , they look the business. Recently watched a video with Chris Harris , and he was not impressed with the m8 one bit , especially the styling. He found it boring to look at and could not justify the 160k price tag. He said a bmw does not fit into that price category , or in the same bracket as Astons , Bentley etc

We owned a 2015 BMW M3 (F80) prior to the M5 since July of 2014. Our F90 is a weekend vehicle since we own several other vehicles and I have a take home work vehicle. Last year we looked at purchasing a new M2 Comp and the dealership allowed us to drive the vehicle for over a week. To make a long story short my wife went with a X3M40i over the M2C and X3M since the vehicle was going to be her daily driver. I have owned numerous performance vehicles over the past 54 years of my life. Once again I find myself already looking at a replacement for the F90. One thing that made me gravitate towards the F90 over the F80 was the upscale interior over our F80 and most importantly was the exhaust sound of the F90 over the F80. Call me old school or just old most of my performance vehicles have had V-8's dating back to my first car (1971 Plymouth Cuda with a 440ci / six-pack ) in 1982. I did not like the stock exhaust sound of our F80. Just like you picking the M2C over the M4 and M5. We would have chosen the M4 over the M2C but the X3M40i was the best fit for my wife. I personally would not have purchased the X3M40i but there is truth to the saying of "happy wife, happy life". Enjoy your M2C it is a fun car to drive for the week we had it.

You think I’m stupid enough to not take in to consideration what the M5 looked like standard, as well as how the looks change on the Coupé? All the design language I analyse is identical between the Coupé and Convertible. The M5 is the more aggressively styled car.

The saloon is just as adept at being a GT as the GT, far more practical and a whole lot less money. So in reality it out GTs the GT on every front.

On the used market, m5s and M8s are basically selling around the same price after just a few years. At that point, the m8 is the clear choice.
