And wow again !! Bhakti and Carnatic music as inseparable one another - and the reverence that the art form should be treated with - it’s a blessing listening to explanation 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Shishurvetti Pashurvetti Vetti Vetti Ganarasam PhaNih - Casper is indeed the best student!! The question on music and faith and the following discussion were illuminating. I was reminded of a similar discussion several years ago when a visiting artist, who shall be nameless but is generally considered a 'rebel with several manufactured causes', took pains to explain why he did not think 'bhakti' was important to music unless you were a 'temple priest'. It was a stunning statement for several of us and we decided to quickly change the subject. It is not without reason that the Nada Muni of Thiruvarur told us that "Sangeeta Gynanamu Bhakti vina Sanmargamu Galadhe Manasa". These are not mere words...they are a lighthouse to guide introspection at mind and deeper levels. Which brings me to a question that you may want to address in one of your future episodes "The role of sahityam and what we can do to promote better understanding of it as a part of music education'. It breaks my heart that raga bhava has primacy over sahitya bhava as if one can exist without the other in Carnatic Music.

Carnatic music and faith are inseparable. Nothing can be more true. This is another educative episode. Personally I learnt a lot. Your demonstration of a few Dikshithar kritis, is simply awesome. You have deep knowledge of our spiritual treasure. Similarly, your assertion on Guru-Sishya bond, its evolution through the years must be an eye opener to the new generation.
Similarly, Sai Sundar's experiences are spicy, interesting and encouraging. Encouraging, because, he started learning music when he was an Engineering College student.
Finally, you have a faithful canine student.
Overall, a wonderful chat. Looking forward to many more.

Thank you so much for addressing my question. Personally, I think there is no tug at the heart strings when faith is absent from Carnatic music. It becomes more a skilled presentation as compared to a passionate outpouring. And it shows. As for Caspar I could see him wandering up and down behind you: it’s almost like he knew he was going to be a star!😁

A very nice informative episode. Bhakti and Carnatic music are indeed inseparable . The divine composers very overwhelmed by the Bhakti and their expression is the beauty of the composition and the song. So is it correct to say , the singer must understand the meaning of the song before it is sung?

Hello Bharat, that's a good question. It is not a necessary condition. Also not understanding does not immediately presume lack of bhakti. Sometimes more knowledge can lead to arrogance. Will answer in an episode as this is very relevant 🙏

Brilliant. Your post made me watch & hear the full half hour plus conversation, waiting eagerly to the climax as mentioned by you.
The climax was astonishingly beautiful and zapped me totally. During the course of the conversation, was guessing what it could be, I kept changing my guesses!
God had sent the right desciple with full enthusiasm and dedication 👏👏💕💕💕😍😍😍😍
