Andrew Sachs (1930-2016) UK actor

Andreas Siegfried "Andrew" Sachs (7th April 1930 - 23rd November 2016) was a British actor. Born in Berlin, Germany, he and his family emigrated to London in 1938, to escape persecution under the Nazis. He made his name on British television and rose to fame in the 1970s for his portrayals of the comical Spanish waiter Manuel in Fawlty Towers, a role for which he was BAFTA nominated.

Andrew Sachs leaves us all with such a wonderful legacy as Manuel, the hapless Spanish waiter. He will certainly never be forgotten and Manuel’s place as one of the great comic characters ever in the history of comedy will always, always be secure. There are so many absolutely delightful funny lines and phrases from Manuel, some of the very best are -
1 -“I Know Nothing” - Manuel’s response to a desperate request from Basil about the money Basil won on a horse, Manuel remembering his earlier instructions from Basil not to say anything;
2 - When Basil says “My horse nitwit!” Manuel replies “Your horse Nitwit”
3. - “He put Basil in the rattatui ! “ , believing Polly was talking about his hamster and not the herb!
4 - When Basil says to Manuel “Hay mucho burro alli”, a puzzled Manuel says “Que? Then Manuel realizes Basil had meant to say mantaquilla, (Spanish for butter, burro is Spanish for donkey) and says “ah, Mantequilla! Burro is... er... ee aw,! ee aw! Basil had said to Manuel “There is too much donkey there! “
5 When Basil says to Manuel “There is too much butter on those trays, Manuel replies No, Senor. Not on those trays. Uno, dos tres.” (Spanish for 1,2,3)
6. “He see girl.”, telling Sybil that Basil had gone up a ladder to look through the window of one of the guest rooms - Sybil was furious with Basil!
Though Andrew Sachs has now left us and has checked out of the Fawlty Towers hotel for good, his character Manuel remains and Manuel will always remain with us.

I saw him in Fawlty Towers and a as Albert Einstein. Quite a range of acting. Must get across the pond more often. Narragansett Bay
