I think Pat has always been looking for the real experience unencumbered by the distractions that ego needs as a kind of GPS of one's character. I don't see as his losing a portion of his brain set him further back from that journey, I believe it moved him forward by removing something that was a distraction. He's one of a few people who come to mind when I envision finding a magic wand that imparts to an individual a doubling or tripling of their lifespan - just to see what they could really discover.
