Consummate players. Les fills beautifully and takes his time to find spaces to accent. Doesn't try to step on Pat's flying. Really a joy to hear these two together.
When he was much younger Pat Martino had a stroke and couldn't play guitar anymore, so he relearned how to play by listening to his own records. One of my favourite guitarists. The album Footprints is high up there for me.
and more martino records!!! smiling when you play this bad is a sign of real class. he does not play his style, nor his guitar, but, good or bad, he doesnt complain and does not blame it on the guitar or anything... and still enjoys being with this legends' legend named les Paul. I call it class!!!!
I just finished "Les Paul: In His Own Words", WOW, what a life...I highly recommend it...fast-moving, humourous, an incredible look at a man who straddled (electrically and musically) the "world that was" and the "world that is"...if you are interested in how recording/electric guitar etc. came to be, it is must reading...
Jason Ferguson Led Paul, Changed EVERYTHING ! , INVENTED, Multi track, Sooo many effects, , Was a groundbreaking, guitarist, in the 40's & after, even the looper, [ black box] that , soo many kids use today.
absolutely beautiful. you can feel the love. the first tune is "i'm confessin that i love you" that they played on pat's "all sides now" cd. les & pat have a long history with pat's dad bringing pat to les at something like age 11 and les being very impressed with the young "upstart". their friendship continued from there. thanks for sharing.
Wow! First off, such precise playing without a serious bone in their bodies. And last, Les reacnes out to shake with his right hand, as ive never seen him do in any of thes videos. I love the chicken refererence Matrin drops halfway through the first number. Thanks for capturing this and for preserving and sharing it.
Martino is deep. I was fortunate to study with him in 1982, as he lived in Philly and I was in the suburbs. I had 6 lessons with him. Never once touched my guitar during a lesson. But his concepts changed the way I approached improvisation. RIP, Pat.
Hi James, I also studied with Pat between 1999-2017 privately at his home in Philadelphia I had many lessons and it was the most amazing musical journey of my life.great to hear you studiedly with him also.
I attended a Les Paul show at the Iridium in '98 and was surprised at the appearance of Pat Martino and the unannounced jam session. If this event only happened once, then I was in the club during the recording of this video. Pat is one of my favorites, but I made note how using Les's guitar setup and sound did not complement his style. Thanks! This brings back pleasant memories of late night music clubs in Manhattan
I have walked by this club too many times to remember and I always think of this exact moment whenever I do. This was a spontaneous NYC moment of "bring it" that can't be duplicated
Recently found out Les Paul was Pat Martinos guardian when he played at Smalls Nightclub in Harlem. Pat was 16 years old and lived with Les part of the year at Pats parents request! Both are such wonderful torchbearers of the instrument.
One of the better “star” duets. Les knows the arrangement and Pat leaves harmony space amidst the flurry to let Les’s guitar sing through. Although I would have jacked up Les in the mix, ever so slightly. Pat is a class act and a jazz as jazz can get.
This was wonderful to watch, thank you for posting this. Being from NYC I have fond memories of seeing both gentleman play and of talking with Mr. Martino several times, I never saw him smile or laugh so many times as he does here, this was priceless.
By this point in his life, Les' arthritis in his hands was bad enough that he had to be economical in his playing. I attended a show in Dallas, Texas in '75 or '76 that was called The Steel Guitar-Jazz Guitar Summit. Les, Howard Roberts, Herb Ellis, and I think Bucky Pizarrelli were there. The Pedal Steel players were Buddy Emmons, Curley Chalker, Doug Jernigan, and Julian Tharpe. The bass player was Slam Stewart and the drummer was Louie Bellson. Anyway, Les overplayed terribly that night. The emcee finally had to call him out for walking all over everybody. He said something like, "Les, let somebody else play, dammit!"
Paul Martino was a genius. His “Symmetrical Parental Forms” is brilliant. He saw two chords as being the starting points, or “parents” of other chords. The Augmented triad (1-3-#5), by FLATTENING any one note, forms 3 major triads, and by SHARPENING any one note forms 3 minor triads (and the relative minors of those 3 majors). The other “symmetrical parent” chord is the Diminished 7th chord (1-b3-b5-bb7). Move any one note DOWN and you’ll create 4 different Dominant 7th chords; move them UP instead and you’ll parent 4 different Half-Diminished 7th chords (mi7b5). - - - So 6 other triads from Augmented ones, and 8 other 7th chords from Dim7 chords … got it? - - - There’s much more to Martino’s observations. He saw those two chords as special on the guitar, which they are! It takes a genius to see things in a fresh way; and I’ll probably be spending the rest of my days on this new approach. - I’m pooped from all that “parenting”. (Sorry.)- - Rip Pat Martino (“He’ll kick your ass.” - Les Paul)
Masterful!! Eye opening with perfection like attention to detail! Perfection like.. Led Paul is perfection like as always and new rookie sideman Pat bingo was amazing in his own right.. These are the type of reviews you would read around this time.... Or maybe not I don't really even know what the fuck i am talking about.............
As a rock guy, I'm surprised that I like Les' playing so much. These videos are great when he's playing and even when he's giving someone a hard time all in good fun. I don't usually understand jazz but this I seem to understand.
Joe Pass may have had albums called virtuoso but look at Pat hit this tune at every angle. Les is just ecstatic to jam with Martino, they were on a similar wave length. Les had a looper before loopers were a thing
Pat Martino is just amazing but Les is! is as good if you consider that his hands are awfully crippled swollen with arthritis he is legend if only his hands where not so? then what a show he'd have given no not even Pat' would've stood the improve speed test as that's the guitar gun slingers ball park the Les Paul Hood only the best of the best dare walk through it Pat and Les both absolute Legends RIP
Consummate players. Les fills beautifully and takes his time to find spaces to accent. Doesn't try to step on Pat's flying. Really a joy to hear these two together.
I'M CONFESSIN' that I love this! The interplay between them is exquisite and just damn good fun.
When he was much younger Pat Martino had a stroke and couldn't play guitar anymore, so he relearned how to play by listening to his own records. One of my favourite guitarists. The album Footprints is high up there for me.

Yes...you know the story of Pat Martino..he sales his guitar for drugs but....he fight hard and at the end almost he coming back and play very great
urban legend (indeed!). he didn't forget, so much as lost interest in playing after his medical episode. at least that's how he tells it.
Just 😍 amazing
I know what that feels like. It happened to me when I was a teenager.
I never saw Pat Martino smile like this. It makes me see the connection, and how we should all listen to more Les Paul records!
and more martino records!!! smiling when you play this bad is a sign of real class. he does not play his style, nor his guitar, but, good or bad, he doesnt complain and does not blame it on the guitar or anything... and still enjoys being with this legends' legend named les Paul. LOVE YOU PAT YOU WERE GREAT . Now your playing for the angels in heaven
The common thread in all of these videos is Les was able to bring out each players unique personality in every performance.
Pat was great but listen to Les playing amazing harmonies, both were among the greatest ever. RIP, we will never catch up!
LOve this... great playing, tasteful playing , all natural, no gimmicks, just tasteful playing !!No pedals, just guitar and amp !!! Love it.
Such a beautiful performance. You can see the genuine love for each other and the enjoyment of making music. Wonderful.
Paid homage to Les Paul (at the Iridium in NYC) when he was 92! The band radiated love to him and so did the folks in the club.
Two of the best guitar players of all time..

Pat. Going full Django. Hung out with him at the bar one night after his set. As wonderful and generous as his playing. Ty. Great upload
No shit. I usually hate when people go full Django but Pat nailed it beautifully. Incredible playing from both of them. Tears in my eyes
absolutely beautiful. you can feel the love. the first tune is "i'm confessin that i love you" that they played on pat's "all sides now" cd. les & pat have a long history with pat's dad bringing pat to les at something like age 11 and les being very impressed with the young "upstart". their friendship continued from there. thanks for sharing.

R.I.P. Pat Martino... R.I.P. Les Paul...
never seen Pat have so much fun as this!!! Pat is inspired by his love for Les
Seems mutual!

Props to the engineer for making the bass sound so good, what great playing all around!!!⚡️⚡️⚡️
Holy crap! Sorry. Lost my words. This I amazing.
What love this video thank you for share!

Can't believe what I've just seen and heard FANTASTIC thanks for posting this

Geez how good is Les !! and I am Pat Martino fan !

The best ever !!!!
" I 'M CONFESSIN "- THE BEAUTIFUL LOVE SONG FROM 1930 WITH A LOT OF NOTES -
I love you too Pat.
the rhythm guitarist is great too!
I'm not listening to the 2 guitarist, I've already listened to them in their other videos but the rhythm guitarist here was great. 👍
Lou Pallo! He died recently, sadly.
@@davidchamberlain8910 I didn't know that. He was rock solid.
@@christiandavis2916 Yeah, great player. Very nice guy too.
I know Pat was boarding house to Les's home ,when he was young.....
good feeling and s'wonderful!!
Remarkable footage. 2 giants in music
Absolutely lovely heartfelt playing.
Quel plaisir !!! belle musique et ils s'amusent !!!!!!
MERCI !!!!!

Les defaulted to turning himself down. It forces the other player to listen harder, I think.
Les Paul with some very tasty playing, not designed to shine but to complement.

Bahh what ever
SaulGoodman what do you mean kid
Two American guitar masters..playing Django version of the tune.I never saw Le Paul..but I saw Pat live...my life has never been the same....
A gem!!
Thnks for posting this!!

Pat's smile is worth the price of admission. His playing...a million bucks.
This is why I love UA-cam thanks chris .
Welcome
Thank you , beautiful ..!
Great to see a Les Paul guitar used clean for jazz and not through distortion.
Wow! Thanks for posting this
Genius
I was lucky enough to be there .... magical
Two Masters at work !
One of the best of these vids ive seen..
Think about what lives theyve had,,,!
God bless Pat and Les,,,,
They worked so hard on their art for US
David Doyle for world
Pat Martino is still alive. Led Paul has passed. Be careful on how you state your comment.
"i'm confessin that I love you" Words and Music by DOC DOUGHERTY, AL NEIBURG and
ELLIS REYNOLDS.
Beautiful.
After a while I was listening to Les more than Pat Martino.
Les puts no more no less the needed notes.
By this point in his life, Les' arthritis in his hands was bad enough that he had to be economical in his playing. Agreed. Much of the time, Pat’s playing is just too busy, strays from the melody and they’re such pleasant tunes.
Pat's concept has more to do with a flow, or rhythmic wave of notes, rather than catchy melodic ideas. Thats his thing
@@doctorskull8197 Pat Martino plays his ass off. It's not for the faint of heart.
One word fantastic. Uncle
INMORTALES GRAN TEMA
The engineer was Les Paul
Pat taught himself how to play better than me…twice‼️
Awesome!
Wonderful !!!

this is so good. the end.
Martino's the first one of Les' "hot shot" guests who I've seen who actually tried to meet Les on Les' turf. 💥
Martino's even even using Les' recording guitar and his echo.
And looks like he's learned Les'licks 😎
Holy ! what a historical music moment !!!
This my first time seeing Pat and holy does he ever like moving up and down scales

Epic jamm ❤❤❤
great guitar
An ending so great you gotta play it twice.
Could someone do me a favour and comment the tabs or the song names?!
Clean tone of a Les Paul👍
Forgot, just a little, how good Pat Martino was. Consider myself reminded. Some jazz guys may say "too many notes" but his mastery is never an issue.
YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joe Pass may have had albums called virtuoso but look at Pat hit this tune at every angle.
Les is just ecstatic to jam with Martino, they were on a similar wave length.
Les had a looper before loopers were a thing

Is Pat playing on the same guitar as Les ?
These two were roommates for awhile. It shows.
Is les paul sweeping?
If memory serves, I think Pat lived with Les for a while early on in his career
YEAH!!!!!!! :-)
