A big laughing smile on my face the whole time Pat is explaining this idea (as I've seen him build this kind of repetitive tension/release many times in concerts) especially when he pretends to be grabbing someone by the throat and shaking them! Love this guy!
Philip Jordanov You are absolutely right. I think it was Sunny. I even tried using repetion at a jazz concert at church and like Pat says, the crowd went nuts. Then I went back to playing the lead lines but the crowd was really into it. Also check out Tommy Bolin's repetitive lick on Billy Cobham's, Stratus... Awesome!!!
You gotta nudge these guys sometimes. Like a skipping record on a hamster wheel that a mouse runs so fast they do a loose loop. By the way if you want to catch mice live and not doom them to he'll with a snapped neck you can take an old t-shirt that you are going thrash any way...wear it and and put it in an extra tall with oatmeal just plain oats not processed berry's n creme flimsy oatmeal but a manly man's heart healthy oatmeal...half a cup will do into a all night a chefs fare lets em relax and forego any fear of the dark. **(⁹This doesn't mean your cat won't go after it in the bucket but up till now we know Chairman Meow is a lazy fat at and probably needs to lay off fancy confectioner's where a blow torch is an ingredient) 5 gallon bucket build a simple ramp to go up into a towel paper roll balance it with some sort of kibble at the end Tiramisu or Creme Brule' is not necessary but the mice sure do like gourmet desserts and hey if you gotta be trapped in a bucket over night with worn t-shirt and loose oatmeal. Anyway balance at the middle and once over the fulcrum they plop into the bucket and it's too tall to jump out. Version 2.1 substitutes a small chunk C-4 explosive Nitro Glycerin putty, Military Grade Detcord and a proximity trigger using the sensor kit from your automatic garage doors safety laser system. Why am I here...oh yeah Jazz n stuff. Me and Bootsy are through with that shit.
Great advice. My favorite example of repetition in his playing was his solo on Blue Bossa. At the 1:35 mark of the song, he repeats a idea which makes it sound incredible.
Not gonna disagree with the great Mr. Martino, but I will say that in the wrong hands, repetition can be really f-ing annoying. You gotta know how to use it judiciously. . .
Not keen on that repetition stuff. Charlie C did it a bit but Grant Greene and George Benson did it far too much. To me, it's the opposite of what improvisation is about and as a source of irritation, it comes a very close second to those dreadful "riff heads" which are so boring and seem to go on forever.
He was my personal favorite. I don't like anyone more than I do Pat. The feel and knowledge that he had is amazing. I'm an eternal fan.
A rhetorical device that really ratchets up the tension. Bravo Mr PM.
RIP quantum guitarist Pat Martino Nov.1 2021...amazing guitar player, unbelievable lifestory-unstrung...
ArenaRocker/ i didnt know..... only 4 days ago at the age of 77 (lung diseases) RIP☼

Pat and repetition... I think I saw him repeating a lick for a solid minute while playing sunny with John Scofield in 2002.
yeah!
and when he resolves it blows minds

I like his description: "(Repetition is) an INSISTANCE of an idea."
Yeah, that's exactly what it feels like. It's a very powerful device.
RIP Mr. Martino....you were/are one of the greats.
Yes, he's definitely a legend on Guitar!
In addition to being knowledgeable about music, he had the very best playing style that I have ever heard.
"There are certain elements that affect an audience"..............Brilliant~!
R.I.P Pat Martino
I enjoy it a lot when Pat does it....but that long one on Sunny almost put me in a trance. 😀

Same, they're too fresh
I might just play one career-long lick
If you had a 'career.'

Poor guy can't come up with any original lines so he has to repeat the same lick over and over again. Shame.
Hahahaha troll detected.
God tier bait
This comment has been here for a year and nobody got the joke yet?! Dude, that's some funny stuff!
@@joetaska Thanks, these jazznazies take there idols very seriously!
