We get so entrenched with thinking we need fancy equipment that we forget where ome from... I cannot love this vid enough... Btw excellent 90 on the grind wheel handle very nicely done
@@JohnDoe-qg6hm the word you are looking for is blower and they aren't all that difficult but cutting the gears accurately takes either patience and lots of files or machines... You can of course go gearless and use a cast flywheel and pulley to spin the blower shaft ... Cast the body in 2 pieces cast the impeller clean up the casting mount the bearings then run the shaft affix the impeller to the shaft affix pulley to the shaft outside the housing affix housing to mount then run a leather belt to a cast flywheel mounted to a frame with a ratchet crank so the flywheel can continue spinning without the crank being turned... Thats the 2nd easiest of the blowers one can make the easiest being a clay cage a stick some grass and 2 pieces of bark with a rock for a bottom bearing

I'm just fascinated by how slow and deliberate he is. Every move he makes is done with patience and intention. I dont know how he is off camera, but we're always in so much of a hurry these days that its inspiring to watch someone slow down and do things right the first time like that.

That's basically what soil looks like in zones with temperate coastal climate like Denmark, southern Sweden and most of the british isles. High carbon content because it's too cold and wet for the soil bacteria to be able to completely degrade all organic matter over the course of a year.
The man simply did what he said he would do....and he did it very well. I am sure that in the future...people will be very surprised at what he turns out...and the quality and craftsmanship of his work.

I was spinning that for my grandfather when he was sharpening everything from axes and scythes to knives. He`s anvil is still there and I plan to make it in use again one day.
Even with benches, you lose a lot of power. The higher your anvil is above the surface of the earth, the more power you lose. Efficiency is a lost art. People have elevated convenience above all other ideals. In this case, quite literally as elevated benches are merely convenience features. People got around this loss of power transfer by using larger anvils than necessary.
Your video reminded me of myself long ago. One day people will need to know these things and today there are few that know basic blacksmithing. Thanks for sharing your expertise, I really enjoyed yoyr video.
Working with your own hands and accomplishing something instead of talking. That is one of most successful ways to happyness. Craftswork is timeless improvement.
I very much enjoyed the video. I too am planning to build a small forge but I'll be going a little higher tech. I'm thinking of converting an old Weber kettle grille, line it with sand and probably use an old electric hair dryer for the air source. As soon as I get caught up on my "have to do jobs" whenever that may be.

I probably won't do this here though. I'll have to elevate it a bit. We get copperheads, water moccasins and rattlers here. Love what you've done here.
I really like how you use the hole as a more natural and ergonomic sitting position. Makes it look almost comfortable to work in, as you have everything around you. Bet it's rather enjoyable, tho I'd put in a backrest myself, at least a low one like a log or something just to help you take care of your back by stretching it out now and then. Lumbar support is never a bad thing after all :) But man i can't get over how cool this looks.

First, I mean no disrespect to the content creator, but nothing that takes place in this video is even mildly impressive. That's OK though, because not everything that we do needs to be impressive, but nothing shown here would make me choose him as a member of my Apocalypse team. I would want someone with a strong background in physical sciences, not necessarily an education but the knowledge. Farmers would be an ideal team member, as they have some of the most fundamentally necessary knowledge in Apocalyptic scenarios (growing food, irrigating, water filtration). Then, a medical professional, but more like a medic than a doctor. Finally, someone to provide security. A blacksmith is a great post-Apocalyptic profession, as they would be able to make tools without power, but a good engineer or physicist can make power without tools. Just some thoughts.

a friend of mine found a similar bowl on his land in germany, from aroun 1850-1900, we alway wondered what they've used it for, as the land was abandond for 50 years. it looks exactly the same! thanks for the video :)
Thanks. One of the most common uses for the pot here in Denmark was just a permanent source in the the house for heating water for washing cloths and all the other things needing a lot of hot water... here is a classic example on how it was installed denstoredanske.dk/Mad_og_bolig/Bolig/Rengøring_og_vask/gruekedel But it is basically just a big heavy duty pot ideal for all kinds of things. The last thing mine was used for before I got it was fishermen heating up tar on the beach and adding the tar to fishing nets. I don't know the German or english name for the pot... In Denmark we call it "gruekedel" and was something most houses did have and a lot of the old houses still have it.
It is so gratifyingly educational, watching you work. You feed a deep need to know a lifestyle as independent as possible. I love how you use Earth directly as your foundation. By the way, I also love your dirt. It looks a joy to dig!
Finding good quality low sulfur coal is getting very expensive where I live and have been using more hardwoods . Is quality blacksmithing coal difficult to find in Denmark ? Do you use a bellows ? Thanks for another excellent video .
Thanks. We have only one blaksmith store in Denmark - but they have all you need in good quality if you don't mind paying for it. All considering do I think the price in Denmark is fair - so would say it's no problem. Danish blacksmiths who thinks it's to expansive to buy in Denmark buy in Germany. I did use bellows in some of my first blacksmith shops and I will use bellows again - just need to make some new once first.

Im only 28 and whenever I sit on the floor I have to make sure I have some kind of process ready and whatever I need to hoist and pull and push myself up with lol or else ill be crawling and rolling along the floor through the house until I find a chair or a couch to climb up with lol. And even then I make more pops and cracks and snaps than a bag of ice lol. Ive been doing landscaping and organic farming for a while even though my body was not meant for it, back problems runs all through my mothers side, ironically they're all 4th and 5th generation Farmers from North Alabama. Everyone at the family reunion looks like the letter "C" dressed in clothes lol

a friend of mine found a similar bowl on his land in germany, from aroun 1850-1900,
we alway wondered what they've used it for, as the land was abandond for 50 years. it looks exactly the same!

Thanks. One of the most common uses for the pot here in Denmark was just a permanent source in the the house for heating water for washing cloths and all the other things needing a lot of hot water... here is a classic example on how it was installed denstoredanske.dk/Mad_og_bolig/Bolig/Rengøring_og_vask/gruekedel
But it is basically just a big heavy duty pot ideal for all kinds of things. The last thing mine was used for before I got it was fishermen heating up tar on the beach and adding the tar to fishing nets.
I don't know the German or english name for the pot... In Denmark we call it "gruekedel" and was something most houses did have and a lot of the old houses still have it.

Finding good quality low sulfur coal is getting very expensive where I live and have been using more hardwoods . Is quality blacksmithing coal difficult to find in Denmark ?

Thanks. We have only one blaksmith store in Denmark - but they have all you need in good quality if you don't mind paying for it. All considering do I think the price in Denmark is fair - so would say it's no problem. Danish blacksmiths who thinks it's to expansive to buy in Denmark buy in Germany. I did use bellows in some of my first blacksmith shops and I will use bellows again - just need to make some new once first.

@@Jordan-zk2rf yes - charcoal is the ideal to use. If you forge small things, can you to some extent also just use wood that hasn't been charred.

Im only 28 and whenever I sit on the floor I have to make sure I have some kind of process ready and whatever I need to hoist and pull and push myself up with lol or else ill be crawling and rolling along the floor through the house until I find a chair or a couch to climb up with lol. And even then I make more pops and cracks and snaps than a bag of ice lol. Ive been doing landscaping and organic farming for a while even though my body was not meant for it, back problems runs all through my mothers side, ironically they're all 4th and 5th generation Farmers from North Alabama. Everyone at the family reunion looks like the letter "C" dressed in clothes lol
