Great video, thank you for updating us. They will always be remembered. But to the narrator, please show a bit of sensitivity as the in the beginning of the video, you expressed "how they lost their lives" which implies they didn't pass away due to old age/physical ailments and the question you posed at the end about "are you surprised that Mr. Clary is still alive?" was also insensitive. Think about it, Ravi Peiris M.D.
My sister worked as a cocktail waitress at a Chicago area dinner theater in the late ‘60’s and early ’70’s and Bob Crane did a short run there. She said he was definitely a player, coming on to every female who worked there.
Yes, Kenneth is still alive at 74 but only did six films and guess stared in 18 TV shows including My Three Sons, Petticoat Junction and The Rockford Files (Wikipedia)
Two summers ago, my female GSD was recuperating from heart surgery and my male GSD, who is a rescue, was acclimating to new home and Charlotte, Sarge, and I watched every episode of Hogan’s Heroes! Never understood the show as a kid watching it. Love it as an adult!
Enjoyed this video as well as all of the videos you do. In this video I saw a picture of Bob Crane and Danny Kaye. I wish you would do a video on Danny Kaye. As a kid I was interested in acting. I was in acting & dance classes. I started watching his movies on TV. He was a huge influence on me. Sadly I can't find those kind of movies on TV anymore 😔. I would love to learn more about him. In my opinion he has to be one of the best dancer's I have ever seen!!!
IVAN DIXON... ...played the character of a boxer in "The Twilight Zone" ...(I am not quite sure exactly when; although it was in season 1, of that series.) (I do remember that it was filmed in black-and-white, though.) Dixon (1931-2008) was 76.
How about Ivan Dixon in "A Patch of Blue" 1965, he played Sidney Poitier's brother, movie was nominated for numerous Academy Awards, Shelly Winters won for best supporting actress. Lonnie in "Car Wash" 1976.
@@alexisjigalin1006 Yes, I noticed that, in his bio-: he did small roles, early in his career. He was Poitier's stunt double, too, I think. Most of Ivan's "creativity" (after Hogan's Heroes) was as director: sitting in "the director's chair", in a number of noteworthy productions. I often wondered why he moved to North Carolina after selling the radio station he owned, in Hawaii: seeing how his birthplace was NYC (Harlem). But, he did go to a school in N. Carolina, those many years ago. He was married for 54 years. His wife died 11 years after him.
This was a good summary however there was an error that must be pointed out. The narrator said that Robert Clary was liberated from a concentration camp on August 11, 1945. The war ended in Europe on May 8, 1945. I looked this up, he was liberated from Buchenwald concentration camp on April 11, 1945, approximately 4 weeks before the war was ended. Two other items should be mentioned. Werner Klemperer was an accomplished classical musician as was his father who was an orchestra conductor. Klink playing the violin off key was part of the comedy shtick that made Hogans Heroes so successful, given the fact that Werner Klemperer was an accomplished classical musician. Also Hogans Heroes running from 1965 to 1971 was one of the first integrated TV series in which an African American actor played a prominent role alongside white actors and actresses. Ivan Dixon played Sergeant Kinchloe until the last season when Kenneth Washington played the part.
Robert Clary spoke of his Holocaust experience in my high school back in the early '80s. He was riveting. I never heard the students so attentive and quiet. I never forgot this. May his Memory be Eternal.

Tough to add to the so many great comments below. Great show conceptually, writing and acting. Born in 62 and remember it being a must-watch for my dad and consequently us. Watch re-runs daily for laughs. This world needs more light-heartedness. One thing I didn't see mentioned but I always get a kick out of, is when Schultz and Klink would refer to LeBeau as a/the/that "cockroach". Now that's just funny. Agree with other comments that Burkhalter and Hochstetter should have been covered. Perhaps Helga and Heidi as well. And sadly as we all likely know now in Jan 2023 that Robert Clary passed in Nov 2022. Reunited no doubt with his tragically-lost family. RIP to all. Thank you for sharing your talents that continue to bring great laughter 50+ years later.

Sad part is they didn't get to do a final episode to close out the series. You will never find a more talented group of people who had that "chemistry " together both on and off screen
Loved watching “Hogan’s Hereos” all throughout my time in middle and high school. My favorite character was Colonel Klink, played brilliantly by Werner Klemperer. He was perfectly cast for his role, as were so many of the other characters.
I loved watching this show as a kid... They had had the reruns through the 70's doesn't mean anyone was racist.. just a good show.. Good comedy and no one cared about race.. Just like all the old movies from the 70's through 80's..
Watching this series, I was always struck how the prisoners referred to their German captors. But listen when LeBeau's character regards the Germans. His remarks are venomous and very real emotionally. Almost like when he had a line to deliver he was getting back for all the pain in his life. He had the best reason of all.
You said Bob Crane's murderer was not found, but I recall the police bringing charges against one of Bob's friends. The story was that the friend was an awkward goof who had no social life on his own. Since Bob was a die hard partier and ladies man, hanging out with Bob gave the guy a party life and Bob would always hook him up with girls. When Bob cut him off and told him to go away the guy flipped out and killed him. Well, that's what I read in the paper when they charged him.
@@Retiredmco That is one, of a couple of versions, presently out there. The "goof-off," referred to, as it was believed was tried. Interestingly, evidence appeared to surface vindicating the alleged murderer. Granted this piece seemingly appears sketching. If you can find Bob Crane's son's interview, he mentions, at least seems to suggest, who may have killed his father. Since I do not like filling in the blanks, due to the many versions thus heard, I would rather that the audience reach a reasonable conclusion to this interesting mystery. Please remain respectful and gracious. Semper Fi
Just seven years after the show went off the air, Crane was brutally killed at home. The murder has never been solved, but investigators and fans of true crime have a good idea of what they believe happened. Crane's career reflected an eclectic mix of talents.
@@r.mercado9737 he said a lot of crap when his screenplay was ignored and they made Auto Focus instead... to the point where he lost all credibility. His comment you refused to actually fill in the blanks for was that he pondered if Bob's ex-wife Patty Olson aka Sigrid Valdis (Fraulein Hilda on Hogan's Heroes) may have done it for the inheritance. OK... where's any evidence - the relationship with Carpenter seems a lot more likely than Robert Crane Jr's paranoid ponderings.
@@chouseificationNah, statistically it's way, way, way likelier to be the spouse. She had motive. Getting 100% of the money (when she would have otherwise been entitled to way less than 50% in a divorce) is definitely motive
CBS was called the "Tiffany" network and deservedly so. They were on top during the golden era of television. Their writers (and others) were the best in the business at the time. Then all of sudden, leadership changed directions and brought about the cancelations of many highly-rated series in 1971 including Hogan's Heroes. During that era, they continued with a practice first made famous by I Love Lucy introducing celebrity actors from other CBS shows to make cameos in episodes. The Mayberry Village drunk "Otis" from The Andy Griffith Show played the role of a German Munitions factory owner in Hogan. Of course, the younger ladies who appeared were buxom beauties. That's just the way it was. Hogan's Heroes was a television work of art for its time though it did take a few liberties too many. Sadly, it would be politically incorrect today.
You said that Clary was the sole survivor. Not true. His sister Nicole survived too. If you ever want a tear jerker of a story. You might want to read about their reunion after the war.
larry hovis (carter) was cast a lieutenant, the only other officer for the 1st few episodes, but was then demoted to the ranks as a goofy master sergeant for the rest of the series with out explanation.
There are a couple of minor hoopses on this--Richard Dawson played Newkirk, not Norwick, and Werner Klemperer escaped Germany in 1933, just after Hitler came to power--not during WW2. Maybe you'll consider updating this clip since Robert Clary died recently as well? Thanks for doing this.
Hi, I hope you are doing well! It seems on my Roku I am unable to watch Hogan’s hero season two episode 10 which is the first episode with Rita Talbert? Do you know why?
The great Larry Hovis played "Lieutenant Carter" in the pilot episode... which unfortunately included Leonid Kinsky as a member of the "Heroes". Hovis was brilliant and Kinsky really stunk. Thereafter, Kinsky was permanently (and thankfully) written out of the show and Hovis was brought back and re-cast as our beloved "Sergeant Andrew Carter"... a very astute move by producer Edward Feldman. Although they were only recurring characters, it would be hard to imagine "Hogan's Heroes" being as funny as it was without the mighty comedic contributions of Howard Caine (Major Hochstetter), Leon Askin (General Burkhalter) and the one and only Kathleen Freeman (Frau Gertrude Linkmayer). PS - I met Ms. Freeman in 1995. She gave me a personally guided tour of her actor's studio in Studio City. She was a real sweetheart! Sadly, she, Mr. Caine and Mr. Askin are also no longer with us.
My understanding to that was Kinsky, along with some other Russian actors around at the time, didn’t feel comfortable seeing the German uniforms even though it was just a show. He choose not to come back for that reason. This is based on an article I read some years ago after Dixon’s death.
@@brooklynzuu1821 I'm not disputing what you've related... but, if accurate, what exactly did Kinsky expect to see when he signed on to do the pilot? Sgt. Schultz dressed up as the drum major in the USC Trojans marching band? Bottom line: Kinsky was a bad fit for Hogan's Heroes. (PS - As an aside... I have fond memories of Brooklyn... going to Dodgers games at Ebetts Field... getting to meet the immortal Jackie Robinson.)
@@DigitalDiscusVideo my apologies for not starting off by saying I agree with you. He really did not fit the show. He seem to be forcing his character on with the little screen time he had. As for Jackie Robinson, he was a great ball player and I’m judging that off of the videos I have seen.
@@brooklynzuu1821 No apologies necessary. I might also include the fabulous Miss Nita Talbot ("Marya" the Russian) as an indispensable recurring character. She was brilliant!
It is amazing that his murderer is still around and that they haven't closed this case, it was so long ago and there is no end to it. I'm not surprised that Robert Clary is still around though. We should do like those that are still here and we can be around as well. God bless you, Mr. Clary. You are an inspiration!
Werner Klemperer was the son of Otto Klemperer, conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic before he fled to the U.S. with his son. Ivan Dixon was a highly underrated actor, in my opinion.
How many of you want to see a movie version in which at the end, after Germany surrenders, Hogan gives the Nazi trio a tour of their underground operations??
you show "The Untouchables" for Klemperer. but you are showing the poster for the 1987 movie (which is wrong), not the TV show from 1959+, which would have been correct, although he was only in one episode (in 1960)
I loved Richard Dawson in “Match Game”. He matched the contestants most of the time. And of course on “Family Feud”. My mom and I watch 70’s Gameshows a lot on Buzzer. Gameshows from the 70’s are better than most of what’s on tv today.
Bob Crane was bludgeoned to death in 1978. Ivan Dixon had a great career as an actor, director, & producer. He acted with Sidney Poitier among others. He was an established actor before Hogan's Heroes.

I believe The Malibu Canyon State Park where the “Fox Ranch” and outdoor scenes for MASH were shot was near Culver City CA also, so probably convenient for both directors and on screen talent to work all of those shows. Very interesting I think.
@@tichdaddy1; The Andy Griffith " Mayberry " set was used a couple of times in Star Trek ( another Desilu Production ) episodes. "The City on the Edge of Forever" and the episode " Miri " .
Johnny Haymer played a General in a 6th season episode. He was Sgt. Zale on MASH.
There were a number of studio "character actors" in those days who would show up for work and on any given day be whatever the day's productions called for. William Christopher, Noam Pitlik, Gavin McLeod, and Frank Marth are four who showed up on Hogan's Heroes multiple times.
Richard Dawson's character's last name was Newkirk, not Nerwick.
Robert Clary passed away November 2022.
One of my favorite shows back in the day.
Think about it,
Ravi Peiris M.D.
My sister worked as a cocktail waitress at a Chicago area dinner theater in the late ‘60’s and early ’70’s and Bob Crane did a short run there. She said he was definitely a player, coming on to every female who worked there.
hmmmmm....maybe a jealous boyfriend of those waitresses was one of those that killed Bob Crane.
Smart man, he had thousands of conquests. He deserved them!
What about Kenneth Washington who played Sergeant Baker. I do believe he still alive as well
Good catch, I was wondering the same.
Yes, Kenneth is still alive at 74 but only did six films and guess stared in 18 TV shows including My Three Sons, Petticoat Junction and The Rockford Files (Wikipedia)
Hovis was one of my teachers at SWT he was great and always made us laugh
You forgot to mention that Hovis was producer and regular panelist on the syndicated game show "Liar's Club" in the 1970's.

Two summers ago, my female GSD was recuperating from heart surgery and my male GSD, who is a rescue, was acclimating to new home and Charlotte, Sarge, and I watched every episode of Hogan’s Heroes! Never understood the show as a kid watching it. Love it as an adult!
Me and my daughter watch this almost every night on Me-TV. She is only 5 an age loves the show
Enjoyed this video as well as all of the videos you do.
It's also believed that Danny Kaye was the Gerber Baby found on all their products.
IVAN DIXON...
...played the character of a boxer in "The Twilight Zone" ...(I am not quite sure exactly when; although it was in season 1, of that series.)
(I do remember that it was filmed in black-and-white, though.)
Dixon (1931-2008) was 76.
"You've got to believe Bolie...you gotta believe." Classic.
How about Ivan Dixon in "A Patch of Blue" 1965, he played Sidney Poitier's brother, movie was nominated for numerous Academy Awards, Shelly Winters won for best supporting actress. Lonnie in "Car Wash" 1976.
@@alexisjigalin1006
Yes, I noticed that, in his bio-: he did small roles, early in his career.

Kenneth Washington, Sigrid Valdis (Hilda), Cynthia Lynn (Helga), Leon Askin (General Burkhalter), were also cast members, and many more.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing your life story. May Robert find peace 😭
Loved Hogans Hetoes for Years and still Watch it Every Night on ME TV! It's Just a Hilarious and Fun show and the Chemistry of Both the Characters and Actors was Perfect! But Two other Characters were Not mentioned.Leon Askin as General Burkhalter and the Fantastic Howard Caine as Major Hochstetter!
I knew of Bob Crane's Tragegy but didn't know or hear until now that Robert clary is still with with us.He's Lucky and I hope that he's enjoying his life too.
Sad part is they didn't get to do a final episode to close out the series. You will never find a more talented group of people who had that "chemistry " together both on and off screen
Thanks for watching!
I did manage to get a hold of Robert Clary by email and I did write to him. he did answer me to say i should buy his book so he could autograph it.
Hogan didn't have a band of American POWs, it was a group of Allied POWs.
Loved watching “Hogan’s Hereos” all throughout my time in middle and high school.
My favorite character was Colonel Klink, played brilliantly by Werner Klemperer. He was perfectly cast for his role, as were so many of the other characters.
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
I loved watching this show as a kid... They had had the reruns through the 70's doesn't mean anyone was racist.. just a good show.. Good comedy and no one cared about race.. Just like all the old movies from the 70's through 80's..
Thanks man, you vid is awesome
Thanks for watching!
Robert cleary hit me the most. Such a sad world we live in.
That's Robert Clary.
I read today that Robert Clary passed away yesterday. RIP
Watching this series, I was always struck how the prisoners referred to their German captors. But listen when LeBeau's character regards the Germans. His remarks are venomous and very real emotionally. Almost like when he had a line to deliver he was getting back for all the pain in his life. He had the best reason of all.
John Carpenter, NOT the acclaimed film director, was widely believed to be Bob Crane's killer, but he was acquitted after standing trial in 1994
I think John carpenter killed Bob Crane.
Werner Klemperer's father was the world famous conductor/musician Otto Klemperer. They escaped Europe in 1933 before WW2
John Henry carpenter.

Robert Clary also spent some time on Days of Our Lives.
He also spent time on the young and the restless.
