Agreed. It makes it hard to accept some of the details I did not know, because I don't know what the narrator may have gotten wrong in _those_ details. At 26:08, the narrator's going on about "Clay" (Clary) but showing Larry Hovis as Carter. Also, some inserted clips of the actors have a massive decrease in volume level.
Hogan is an easy choice for favorite, but that's only because he was the mastermind and headliner. The other characters were so enjoyable and entertaining to watch. Each character had an important part to play it seemed in every episode. It was a very nice balance, and you got to look forward to watching each character. This show had a very large ensemble hence the length of this video. All the actors/actresses were very good. Amazingly their characters were well developed despite the plethora of characters. The storyline and antics were funny, entertaining, and dramatic, too. The show was great. In many ways more enjoyable to watch than other great shows of its era. The theme song was great, too. Now on to see the re-runs again!

At 30:02 they show how brilliant Carter is by saying he made chlorine gas out of "pneumonia" and bleach. I bet no one else has ever been able to do that, either before or since!
Man, I'd like to see a reboot of the series, but sticking to the spirit of the original series, not making it "woke" like "Hold on, we can't have Hogan kissing all the women like in the original" or stuff like that. It would ruin a reboot, if people would do it without this original laissez-faire style.
Werner also played a German inspector/police part in a Perry Mason episode. One thing about Larry Hovis...he almost always wore gloves. He was not married in the show but he was married in real life and refused to remove his wedding ring for the show. They covered it with gloves most of the time. However, it can be seen quite often.
It's always fun to read a viewer's contribution(s) to (at least) a portion of the biographical backstory of the subject of the video. On occasion, I watched Perry Mason episodes with my mother on our 21", B&W RCA console TV, complete with the "rabbit ears" on top of the set, which would help draw in the "Signal" for the three TV stations during that time: ABC, CBS, & NBC--in "Living Color!" (I am referring to the period in my life here when I lived in Columbus 9, Ohio.) So I am aware of that show and its many wonderful qualities. Now you have peaked my curiosity, and I would love to see Werner in the role that you have mentioned. Thank you for sharing that. ~ (As an aside: Prior to the passing of Raymond Burr, he and his husband owned and lived on a (grape) vineyard estate, which I believe was located northwest of Healdsburg, here in Sonoma County, California, a 1+ hr. drive north of San Francisco. She left a message at the theatre where the play was held for him to call back "Fraulein Helga" in hopes they could rekindle their relationship (she had been divorced recently and knew Crane was also about to divorce). However, she never heard back from him and was devastated when she found out he had been murdered. She said for years afterward she had recurrent nightmares that he was crying out to her for help.

Excellent documentary. I'm 67 and all I can remember is going to friends house or doing something for someone either in the late afternoon or early eveing and Hogan's Heros would always be playing.. By coincidence, many of my friends fathers flew bombing missions over Germany and were big fans of HH. One was a ball turret gunner and had on his desk three altimeters mounted from the three B17s they had to scrap cause they were so damaged. He told us several stories from missions he barely survived... Some were so funny my rib cage would be sore the next day... `His name was Wayne Schofield.

I think that, in the middle of the Cold War and 3 years after the Cuban Missle Crisis, American audiences were not interested in seeing a Russian portrayed as an ally.
I heard it a bit differently: he thought that knowing that the Russians were segregated from all the other allies and were put in separate camps (when not outright killed) and no one would believe a Russian mixed in freely with the others.

I am under the impression that the show did no take themselves seriously . the whole show is a joke. so the using the same actor for different rolls, referring to things things were done as hidden jokes (easter eggs) for those who paid attention to such things.
There is a continuity error in many episodes, in some episodes there is a sink by the door where they use the faucet as a parascope and other episodes there are a set of lockers in the same location.
Al Ruddy was a guest at one of my film seminars at university and related the story change as well as selling the idea to CBS. Management at CBS had changed hands which was a nightmare for anyone to face a new, uninterested management team since his initial dealing was with the previous management. As Al began to tell the story, he could tell it wasn't going well, then decided to tell the story using the characters different voices, still no response, he continued, then a few chucles began, leading eventually to laughter, and finally getting a commitment for the series. Al was originally at the Rand Corp., think tank, in Santa Monica, before making a change to writing as well as his feature works with The Godfather trilogy among others.
Some errors in this with regard to actor names. Robert Clary is referred to as Clay. And worst of all Werner Klemperer is referred to as Klempner. Very careless.

I, as a German, love the original version the most. The version truly is too silly, and I therefore don't really like it. I guess many of the original jokes and dialogues would get lost in translation. A German stalag where even Germans within themselves speak English. To me, that itself is funny. But also the obvious fake locations, the cooler, for instance, doesn't look German at all. Also, many of the houses and facades truly are American. ❤😂
Schultz carrying a Model 96 Krag instead of a Mauser was always strange. The Krag sticks out like a sore thumb with it's side loading receiver (easily seen in many shots of Schultz holding his rifle). I know this observation isn't anything new
Not quite the way i rememember Hogan's Hero's. Some inacuracies and pitifull naration, however; all the ww2 veterans 30:54 i knew loved the show. One veteran said and i quote, he said "sig heil, in case we lose !" ( some kind of inside joke)Another veteran said if you ever had the misfortune of meeting a nazi "during the war" these pompus-ass nazi characters were totally believable.A third veteran who had been an airman and a prisoner of war did open up about some of the daily hell of being there and doing without "everything" including Red Cross packages which the nazis confiscated most of the time. I think : in reality , the only thing sadder than the events of ww2 was Bob Crane's demise.These noble actors and actresses that portrayed the characters in Hogan's Hero's deserve a humanitarian award for this great comedy .It seemed to be like a healing ointment for all those veterans that i knew " back in the day. WTF! This video lost all credibility after mispronouncing and misspelling Werner Klemperer's name multiple times. Please allow someone who is familiar with the show do the narrating. It is obvious that the current narrator is reading from a script and has never watched the show.
From watching other videos about the history of the Desilu Studios, if I remember correctly, "Hogan's Heroes" was filmed on Desilu Studios' 40-acres backlot. And if you saw a wide screenshot that takes you "out and across" the compound, past a guard tower, to a high berm, I believe that over that long, high, earthen boundary one would see a "typical" housing tract (of pre-WWII homes) in a neighborhood in Culver City, California, a place where "regular 'ol people" went about their everyday activities. What an interesting contrast between the "Make-Believe World of Hogan's Heroes" and the "Real World" just a few footsteps beyond that high berm! (I believe it was Lucille Ball, the owner of Desilu Studios with her husband, Desi, who gave the "Green Light" to allow production of the "Hogan's Heroes" show on their studio lot.)

As a kid and the son of a WWII vet, I never understood how it could be considered "comical" to show a POW Camp. Nor did my Dad. In POW camps it was pretty tough going, what was funny about that? I have a friend, his Dad was a flyer and his Dad was a POW in Poland (or it's Polish territory after the war) I think is where he was.I KNOW that it wasn't as bad as the POWs in Japanese controlled camps were, but it gets pretty cold in Europe, and they had little food. Plus, the guards played games with the Red Cross packages that were often the only food that they had, especially towards the end. It seems to me that perhaps twenty years after any war, there is this rather strange nostalgia. But is terrible. It's beyond my comprehension and frame of reference that some of the actors had families murdered in the death camps, and wear the enemy uniform and be inna comedy. Even less so when you see relative names in the archives. By the name, it simply says for the fate: "Went East."
As kid, after watching the film "Stalag 17", I refused to watch "Hogan's Heroes" because I didn't believe POW camps were funny. Couldn't watch "The Beverly Hillbillies" either. I believed the sitcom made fun of "poor people". Kid logic. 😆
Fix your AI dialogue! Leonid KINSKY, Robert CLARY. Fraulein HELGA. Sgt KINCHLOE. Werner KLEMPERER's FATHER was Jewish; he was a symphony conductor. Klemperer himself was Catholic.. A fun entertaining show with good writers,characters and actors. Why can't hollywood. Create such good shows again. They only seem to make one really funny series per decade. Ex. Friends , Seinfeld Mash and Big Bang theory.
So the show was cancelled because the powers that be decided people didn't want to see a war show while the Vietnam war was raging. Somebody should have told the people bringing MASH to the big and small screens.

Us too! What is your most memorable episode of Hogan's Heroes?
Not quite the way i rememember Hogan's Hero's. Some inacuracies and pitifull naration, however; all the ww2 veterans 30:54 i knew loved the show. One veteran said and i quote, he said "sig heil, in case we lose !" ( some kind of inside joke)Another veteran said if you ever had the misfortune of meeting a nazi "during the war" these pompus-ass nazi characters were totally believable.A third veteran who had been an airman and a prisoner of war did open up about some of the daily hell of being there and doing without "everything" including Red Cross packages which the nazis confiscated most of the time. I think : in reality , the only thing sadder than the events of ww2 was Bob Crane's demise.These noble actors and actresses that portrayed the characters in Hogan's Hero's deserve a humanitarian award for this great comedy .It seemed to be like a healing ointment for all those veterans that i knew " back in the day. "
I still watch this to this day.

A good documentary ruined by a total lack of professionalism. Not bothering to get the cast’s names right is bush league at best and you should be ashamed of the result.

WTF! This video lost all credibility after mispronouncing and misspelling Werner Klemperer's name multiple times.
Please allow someone who is familiar with the show do the narrating. It is obvious that the current narrator is reading from a script and has never watched the show.

From watching other videos about the history of the Desilu Studios, if I remember correctly, "Hogan's Heroes" was filmed on Desilu Studios' 40-acres backlot. And if you saw a wide screenshot that takes you "out and across" the compound, past a guard tower, to a high berm, I believe that over that long, high, earthen boundary one would see a "typical" housing tract (of pre-WWII homes) in a neighborhood in Culver City, California, a place where "regular 'ol people" went about their everyday activities. What an interesting contrast between the "Make-Believe World of Hogan's Heroes" and the "Real World" just a few footsteps beyond that high berm! (I believe it was Lucille Ball, the owner of Desilu Studios with her husband, Desi, who gave the "Green Light" to allow production of the "Hogan's Heroes" show on their studio lot.)
If this show was made today there would be a backlash from the Jewish and German community.

Love Hogans Heroes but my God if your gonna do a factual video like this learn to pronounce the names right and also misspelling names like Klemperer is horrible

I always thought Hogan's Heroes was based on the Film "The Password is Courage".
As a kid and the son of a WWII vet, I never understood how it could be considered "comical" to show a POW Camp. Nor did my Dad. In POW camps it was pretty tough going, what was funny about that? I have a friend, his Dad was a flyer and his Dad was a POW in Poland (or it's Polish territory after the war) I think is where he was.I KNOW that it wasn't as bad as the POWs in Japanese controlled camps were, but it gets pretty cold in Europe, and they had little food. Plus, the guards played games with the Red Cross packages that were often the only food that they had, especially towards the end. It seems to me that perhaps twenty years after any war, there is this rather strange nostalgia. But is terrible. It's beyond my comprehension and frame of reference that some of the actors had families murdered in the death camps, and wear the enemy uniform and be inna comedy. Even less so when you see relative names in the archives. By the name, it simply says for the fate: "Went East."

As kid, after watching the film "Stalag 17", I refused to watch "Hogan's Heroes" because I didn't believe POW camps were funny. Couldn't watch "The Beverly Hillbillies" either. I believed the sitcom made fun of "poor people". Kid logic. 😆
Fix your AI dialogue! Leonid KINSKY, Robert CLARY. Fraulein HELGA. Sgt KINCHLOE. Werner KLEMPERER's FATHER was Jewish; he was a symphony conductor. Klemperer himself was Catholic.. But one major thing yo missed: all the women *except* Gertrude Burkhalter were thoroughly modern in dress, with the possible exception of Helga's braids.
The narration of these Facts Verse videos is always full of mistakes, especially mispronouncing words and butchering people's names. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!

A fun entertaining show with good writers,characters and actors. Why can't hollywood. Create such good shows again. They only seem to make one really funny series per decade. Ex. Friends , Seinfeld Mash and Big Bang theory.

The Prisoners weren't inept. There were shows not in winter
So the show was cancelled because the powers that be decided people didn't want to see a war show while the Vietnam war was raging. Somebody should have told the people bringing MASH to the big and small screens.

There was only ibe episode tge featured thr gang with instruments. They were trying to cause an avalanche to block the Germans by playing loudly. Uf I remember correctly, ut didn't work but something else caused it instead
