John Banner, born Johann Banner, was an actor in Germany prior the WWII. Because he was Jewish, he lost virtually all his family in the Holocaust. He was visiting friends in Germany when he was stricken. He had married a French woman who was a great cook, which made him obese. He credited his weight with getting the role of Schultz.
Robert Clary was one of fifteen children in a French Jewish family. He was liberated from Auschwitz & survived the Holocaust, as did two other siblings. Their parents, & their other twelve siblings, all died in the concentration camps. He must have been driven beyond comprehension to be a part of a show that unceasingly portrayed the Nazis as perpetual losers.

I enjoyed the show, but there were two historical flaws, the Germans generally didn't put officers and enlisted men in the same camps, and there were no African-American bomber crewmen. It is also interesting that all the main Nazis were played by Jews.
Remember reading that the actors Werner Klemperer and John Banner relished portraying the Nazis as such buffoons. Another similar historic facta: To those wearing the swastika (more correctly and in similar vein, , Hakenkruz or hooked cross) hated the term Nazi and never used it. The term is derived from the name Ignaz, the German equivalent of "Little Johnny" or a country bumpkin. It was applied by a critic, but much like the phrase "the Big Bang" was originally mocking, it has become the standard term.
My father also love this show, so did I, my dad's favorite character was Sergeant Schultz, he was always saying I know nothing, that damn computerised voice got it wrong saying that it was Colonel klink who said that.
There are two more actors that were missed. John Dehner, who played a Gestapo officer in the two-part episode to Paris. And Nita Talbot. who had a recurring role as Russian agent Maya.
Sgt Schultz was more than a toymaker, he owned a toymaking company. Klink started begging him for a job when Hogan tricked them into thinking the war was over.
Noam Pitlik's life photo looks nothing like his show photo. I don't think they are of the same person. Bernard Fox played Malcomb Merriweather on several episodes of Andy Griffith Show. He also had rolls in 2 Titanic movies. Frederick Fleet in "A Night to Remember" and Col Archibald Gracie in "Titanic".
"I know nothing!" was Schultz, not Klink. There was nothing in the series to indicate Kinchloe was 2nd in command. In fact, he was out-ranked by Carter. Martel was AMAZING in the Star Trek episode, Amok Time. Dawson thought he was going to be the/a star on Hogan's. Lynn was WAY sexier. Hoyt was in the first pilot of Star Trek. also did an amazing episode of Twilight Zone, "Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up?" Stewart Moss did two episodes of Star Trek. Bernard Fox was great, including his work on the Andy Griffith Show and Bewitched.

Yes and no. His friend John Carpenter was arrested twice and tried twice, first was a mis-trial and second was dismissed due to lack of evidence. The Scottsdale Police found a small amount of blood and brain matter on the door of Carpenters car, but the 2 square inch piece of vinyl was lost by the evidence department somtime in the 80's or 90's.
The guy who was tried for it was acquitted. His name was Carpenter, and he was paling around with Crane. I think they had a falling out, and some believe the murder was revenge. There's also a theory that Crane got mixed up with another man's wife, and the husband did him in. None of it was actually proven, though. The Carpenter suspect is now deceased.
I heard that Bob Crane was really big into child pornography. Maybe some got furious with him about that and killed him because of that. He was wearing a white tee-shirt when he was sleeping in bed. When his dead body was found, his tee-shirt was pink and it was soaked in his blood.
