Neato. I know it's hard to tell from a vid, but I think she has everything you need to get on the water asap. The dodger is amazing, the aluminum bottom dinghy is going to be well worth the extra weight and the new life raft will let you sleep easily at night.
The motor sound like she started right up and ran like a clock too. As for the the "performance" aspect, is that why you want to go "cruising"? All rigs have their pros and cons, but they can all take you where you want to go. Cat boats are very nimble and having two redundant rigs with carbon fiber, keel-stepped masts makes her basically bulletproof. The electric wench is a nice touch too ;)
Look into a make/model of boats call "Nonsuch" here on You Tube they use the same rig, but with a single forward mast, like a traditional New England cat boat, which were very popular racers in their day. I really like the unique interior layout and cockpit with the high combings. Very save for people and dogs. The fact that it's a bit tricky (for now) for Yoshi to go up and down may actually prove to be a good thing. Kind of like a baby gate for people. You can always build a little ramp, or something, if need be.
Otherwise, I say the layout and overall unique design are a plus. There are plenty of big ol, Schooners and Catamarans out there. However, a twin-bladed, Wind-Surfing, Globe-Cruising Ketch-Cat would be a nice change of pace and set you apart from the other sailing folks on UA-cam, et. al., which is worth considering too.
There will never be a "perfect" boat, but considering she's close to home and there's really nothing "wrong" with her, I'd say she's just about right........The brand name "Freedom" seems a good omen too.
Keep us posted Captain! Cheers from FL, USA!

I think you’d be silly to pass this one up. Looks a great boat for a good price especially with a mates rate. Just pull the trigger. You’ll never afford a boat for 4/5 people on your budget, this is perfect to get you sailing and build the channel more. Maybe in 5 years you will be able to have a 40-50ft boat and take crew. But that time will come.

Mark I have to say you've just had a once in a lifetime deal dropped in your lap.
This boat is everything you want with none of the hassle and one hell of a starter yacht for you.
It is within budget even just being so but still from the sound of it everything that needed doing has been done.
The fact it has the aluminum bottom dingy with outboard included is a huge plus and you can always upgrade from the 5 hp.
As far as the search goes this is by far the best you've found so far and would have you out there in the spring ready for adventures.
I also love watching Captain Q and if there was ever anyone you could take the information from as absolute truth when it comes to yachts it would be him.
Good luck with your decision and I wish you nothing but the best.

Marky !! The Freedom 40 Cat-Ketch is my DREAM BOAT and the Freedom 35 is a GEM ! The capsize ratio and comfort ratio make her a Great Blue Water Cruiser !
She is easy peasy to sail single handed and will take you anywhere you desire to go.
A Wind Vane will steer her well on open ocean. and the Vertical Stern/Transom makes installation of the Wind Vane AND a split deck swim platform very easy to install. Now that Volvo Penta 2003 isnt the best powerplant , BUT , if it runs good it'll keep you until you can put a new Beta Turbo Diesel in her.
That is an excellent example of the Freedom 35 if the price is right.
    And Offshore ???
It will take you ANYWHERE , except maybe the Roaring 40's would be sketchy.
I am 100% behind you on this choice Mark.
    Excellent Vessel
    Good Dinghy
    Sails well upwind
    minimal weather helm.
Has a Great cockpit enclosure, ya.
That is a very fine example of the Freedom 35.
    Solid Vessel !

All good comments. I am no fan of Volvo either. I am on my second one, and it is carefully making friends with me, but if it steps out of line it will be replaced. Volvo service part costs and fussy reliability make them uncompetitive with better engine replacement. Also,, I think the 2003 had that gearbox drive spline issue. I am a big fan of Betamarine too, and have good experience of both Beta and Vetus. I am so impressed with Vetus, that I would put them only slightly ahead of the superb Betamarines.

    • @SailProMarina
      @SailProMarina Рік тому +12

@@jadams3427 Yea so very true. My Bruce Roberts 345 had the Volvo and I was tired of fixing her , So I went overboard and installed the BETA45T and Wow. It pushed her 8/9 knots at 2000rpm , pretty quietly , and nearly same fuel mileage as the 3cyl Volvo. dollar for dollar I love Beta Marine. But I don't have any hands on with the Vetus powerplants. I like this boat for Mark if the price is right. I saw it sold 3/4 years ago for around 20k GBP and seeing this owner has done some valuable work ( which we never recover on resale ) I'd say its a 20k boat now .... BUT if he is giving Mark a " Great Deal " then 15k GBP would seem fair and help Mark get back on the water as soon as the sun decides to shine again in the UK.
so April 15th to May 1st is my guess.
And in the meantime she's moored in a safe place and he can add new toys onto her. Others saying this boat isnt blue water or fast or a good design just don't know the vessel. The masts dont needs stays because they are lightweight and stepped deep into her guts and very stable. She's easy to single hand sail and they usually have 3-4 reef points on each sail. She sleeps 7 no problem, 6 comfortably, and has plenty of room to add creature comforts. I want the bigger version myself 40 or 44' Cat Ketch with the drop down centreboard keel. But the 35' is very stable in open water.
A damn fine boat for the right price.

    • @SailProMarina
      @SailProMarina Рік тому +8

@@Floki__Vilgerdarson The other really nice aspect of the Freedom 35 is the cockpit is quite protective and if you look to the left of companionway where the sheets come thru there is 6-8 clutches there to make her easily and fully handled from the cockpit. With that said the only other single handed challenge is working ALL those sheets from that one area. SOLUTION ; Add 1 - 44/45 Electric Winch or 2 smaller 32's and then you can handle ALL the sheets very fast and efficiently
OR a good sized self tailer with a Dewalt 90* angle drill to make it a " power winch " and same result.
That cockpit tent looks excellent condition and the Dodger portion looks clear and crisp so offshore protection is there and to be able to sail her from the comfort of a warm & dry cockpit is priceless. And adding a power assisted Winch makes it like Cruise Control for all your sheets with those clutches to lock everything down on demand
      Ya , I like it.

Hey Mark, I love your channel! Keep an eye on that engine since it has some weak points like exhaust elbow(which is old and rusty). Exhaust elbows made of stainless steel can be found online for around 200$ which solves the issue. Also, many people complained about rear crankshaft seal which is really hard to replace. If rear crankshaft seal is worn, you'll be able to see some oily spots on starboard side of the engine near the flywheel housing.... I had Volvo Penta 2002(two cylinder) on my sailboat and it's a simple and reliable engine. I personally didn't have those issues, but you should check. It starts easily even in cold weather if you use the cold start procedure, since it doesn't have glow plugs :)
Greetings from Serbia and good luck!

Smart choice on the SAAB - good solid cars they were and a shame that GM ran them into the ground. Looks like Yoshi is very comfortable in it. The Freedom 35 would also be a very smart choice. I was looking at one b4 getting my current boat and probably would have jumped on it if the price was a little more reasonable. I've seen videos of Freedom 35 ketches tacking like mad up narrow channels adjacent to packed mooring fields. From what I've heard, the "hands free" tacking capability is a game changer and very addictive once you've experienced it. They are a special boat and highly valued among single handed sailors.

The Freedom 35 Cat Ketch is a great sailing vessel. For a full keel boat, it is surprising fast and sails well up wind. You are correct about it being balsa cored. In fact, it is cored below the water line also. The good news about the 35 CT is that it does not have any port lights directly in the hull. Ehereas the Freedom 45 does, which has led to water intrusion into the hull core. I have sailed many Freedoms and my favorite is the 35 Cat Ketch. It is a stable sailing platform capable of being single-handed, and the carbon fiber masts mean no stays (shrouds) going through the deck. Hope this helps.

You could hopefully spend the winter in that marina and have your car to go back and to your mum and dads. I disagree. How many UA-cam channels have had surveys done and they missed glaring damage. Two come to mind immediately, Skua on Sailing Kittiwake had chainplate mounts practically made of paper mache. Sailing Uma's keel literally flopped back and forth and the floors were separated from the hull. I don't recall if Mads at Sail Life had a survey, but I'd be surprised if he didn't, and his floors and stringers were mush. So I'd personally rather go on the owners forum for a boat, and ask where the problem areas are, then study those closely. Also I'd have the boat hauled to check for osmosis.

Hey Mark, you should buy the boat. Do it. My opinion. A long keel gets you very good stability. The boat tends to cut through short waves whereas modern boats with a short keel are more wobbly. There is a good comparison between old longkeels, mediums and modern keels from the german YACHT magazine. Maybe there is a translation somewhere. The draft will not be an issue. Less draft gets you closer to shore and you can go to places where other boats cannot go. Out in the open it is only about balancing your sail to your ballast by reefing. You know the rule? If you think about reefing you should reef right away. The ballast in the longer keel is also just a more even distribution over the length of the boat, so the draft can be less. So no issue there. A ketch-rigg will be an advantage for solo or shorthanded sailing. Two smaller sails are easier to handle than one large. And you said yourself that the sail configuration will be perfect for going downwind with the tradewinds. And what an arsenal of rope-stoppers in front of the winch. You probably can put every line into the cockpit with that! So you can probably handle everything from the protected cockpit. You can shortcut so much preperation with this boat and go off in spring for first trips and maybe go for the caribian in autumn/winter. I am sure you will have plenty adventures until then, that poeple will want to see. I ´ll be watching for sure. Cheers, Michael.

This is a fine boat in great condition and seems to have had so much work done already. All the kit, tender, outboard, new covers, I’m finding it hard to see any negatives. I have a Volvo 2020B and it has not let me down, touch wood. A very capable boat to go pretty much anywhere. Shallow draft is your friend in the Caribbean…. The brackets on the side of the hull are for sea legs. Check to see if they are included but you may find they just left the brackets. They come up now and again on eBay etc and worth having to dry out and save on lift out fees. A.so great in places like the Scillies, Brittany etc. The varnish work could maybe do with a freshen up but it all looks great. The guy seems very genuine and knows so many people in the marina so I don’t doubt his sincerity. If I had a choice between this and a certain steel boat this wins hands down as it is ready to go, you can handle any work needed on this boat and just set of on your travels. I can’t see you finding another 35’ boat, in this condition, for this price tbh. Unless you see anything else that really grabs you then get on and buy it. Yoshi is such a lovely chap, sitting there in your car as you went through Blinklist. He is so loyal to you and with netting around the deck he would be safe onboard. Btw the Saab is a great car, nice and comfy, good buy. Cheers matey and good luck. Andy UK

This Freedom is definitely a better setup than the Wharram in CR. Freedoms have a pretty good reputation for build quality (Balsa core deck, so check carefully). The lead ballast is a big plus. Freedoms are roomy for their waterline. They do not go to windward especially well, and two spars with those wishbone booms will present a lot of windage at anchorage and in bad conditions. I also don't think the Volvo sounds healthy; it should purr and this one had a lot of valve train noise and seemed a little rough (perhaps still too cold). I think this would be a good cruising boat for coastal sailing and the Caribbean, though I'm not sure that I'd want to sail it across the Atlantic or Indian Oceans (capsize ratio 193, not terrible but not great either).. The fact that your head always touches the ceiling will get annoying after a while. If it were me, I'd keep looking..
