Glad to see your take on the cat ketch! My 10 year plan aspires to a freedom 39 or 45 cat ketch. As a dinghy sailor with a free standing carbon fibre mast, I’m sold on the rig.
Very interesting design. I've always wondered why the unstayed masts didn't catch on. If they're solid enough for the Maltese Falcon, they should be just fine on an under 40 foot boat.
At 5 11 I might risk it for that single-handed ease and tack alone...fucking take a chunk my dear you earned it And did you see that drunk uncle paint job on the aft...lol

we had a Freedom 28 and it was a great boat. They do have the quality of feeling like a larger boat. The hull was very strongly made, the masts are very strong so long as you do not let the carbon fiber get damaged at the mast step or otherwise. You can take the boat out in a lot of wind using just one of the sails and it's no problem. Their high freeboard also contributes to making them feel like bigger boats. We had a little delamination of the get coat, a/k/a blistering but got that fixed which was not a big deal and that was the end of it. The only catch is they don't point like a Soling, but if you wanted a Soling, you wouldn't buy a Freedom cat ketch. Plus they go surprisingly fast reaching, provided there's some wind. Overall excellent boats.
I wasn't expecting this when I fist saw her but what beautiful yacht, full of Character. I've fallen in love. I anyone is thinking of scrapping one I'll take it.

She's a real smasher. I see the aft cabin as a proper engine room / workshop / storage. The non stayed mast gives me a case of the ebee geebies, but thats just me. Another interesting video. Many thanks.
Go look at how well these things did in Hurricane Dorian. Just about every boat on the BVIs lost their mast, but not the handful of Freedom Yachts. The hulls of those boats took more damage than the mast. These masts are remarkably strong, and it's a shame no one else is really doing anything like it anymore.
How timely. In my search for a ketch that can be sailed primarily single handed I recently discovered the cat-ketch. Been looking at Freedom 44's but it was very interesting to see your walk through of this 35'er.

There should be several Nonsuch’s in your area to view. Really enjoy your reviews of the various good old boats.
I was recently watching a the youtube channel Sparks on the USS Ronald Reagan Aircraft Carrier. Have you ever considered making a video and covering a vessel that size? I think I would watch that all the time.
Just found the channel recently and really like it. Always loved the idea of sailing and enjoyed the little I have done. Just got a Santana 20 and your channel is fueling this Marines dreams of sailing something bigger. Looking for a sweet cruiser now that the wife accepts that sailing is "pretty enjoyable" after all!
@@YachtHunters thanks for the words of encouragement! The interior needs a complete update which if you can think about what you need to be off shore. Brake out the tools and get to work, I have done complete guts of boats and the results were outstanding. All were the result of either water damage, an owner wanting to expand a freezer or just the need to install necessary upgrades.
Captain Q, Yacht Hunter I would but waiting to have my right hand and wrist operated on. Was injured when a windlass crushed it against the chain in a locker. I may after the surgery and recovery.

you should always have a dog !!! he/she will follow you anywhere and adapt to your wishes and share your joy and be really happy when you dock occasionally

Thanks, Ron. We should have some gems coming up in that price range... the season is heating up but so is demand for boats (especially during COVID)... stay tuned!
Very do-able. However I'm sticking to my plan of 4 years remaining before buying just to get knowledge and hopefully get to sail on a few different sizes and configurations. I don't want to wish I had known about some design or wish I had thought about this or that in my selection process.
Ahoy Captain Q!! Thank you for making these videos, and helping to make sailing dreams possible. Please do a video about the various pluses and minuses of various hull types. I know you tube is full of "hull types" videos, but your style of calm discussion is like listening to a favored teacher. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the effects of the production sailboat racing rules in the 1950's to 1980's on general sailing craft. What I'd really like to know is, were there any better sailboat designs that weren't able to meet the specifications in the sailing rules. Thanks!!
do your homework and get a surveyor i bought a 25 year old boat and sailed it for twenty years and sold it to a man who has now sailed it another 20 years
Really appreciate listening to Captain Q talk about everything, but it would be beneficial to give more attention to the stuff he’s talking about, rather than keeping the camera mostly on him.
The captain has a size issue and no matter how hard the cameraman tries to get around him , its nye on impossible ...sorry i will try to duck more afte rall the boat is everything !!1 thank you

I notice the camera cut away when the maneuvering down that super tiny hatch commenced. I believe my Catalina 30 had more interior room than this boat and way more head room.
You are probably right but all boats are a compromise no? This man, Capt. Q is a man to be admired. His knowledge is ridiculous, his charm is at a 10. (16 1/2) We all love this guy. (but) Where can we buy a boat today?
Not sure if these are up to date of not. Im in NH which helps, and I have about 30,000, (I want to spend less) but looking for a livable boat. Please give advice to where I can look. (See? its all about me). Any advice you two can give is appreciated. I'll keep watching. The Captain is the coolest.
I just repaired a freedom Carbon fiber mast a few months ago.
Thanks!!
wowo thank you but that's a long discussion but we are exploring an interesting panel for you all
A terrific walk through. Superior knowledge. A lifetime of experience. Greetings and thanks from Scotland.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Boats like this are free down in south Florida, but you will realy have to look around.
Im a yr out from being able to buy a boat but this is exactly what I would want
No it's not, at least it shouldn't. I once had a 35 year old fiberglass boat. Never again.
do your homework and get a surveyor i bought a 25 year old boat and sailed it for twenty years and sold it to a man who has now sailed it another 20 years
Totally agree Captain Q
Really appreciate listening to Captain Q talk about everything, but it would be beneficial to give more attention to the stuff he’s talking about, rather than keeping the camera mostly on him.
The captain has a size issue and no matter how hard the cameraman tries to get around him , its nye on impossible ...sorry i will try to duck more afte rall the boat is everything !!1 thank you
Great videos and lessons
Could use help with the teaching have questions price and availability for an vessel between 35’ minimum prefer 45’ to 60’
Wanted to purchase before July 1st
I love your channel. Keep up the great job!
GREAT VIDEO .. Thanks for good priced boat......
I notice the camera cut away when the maneuvering down that super tiny hatch commenced. I believe my Catalina 30 had more interior room than this boat and way more head room.
You are probably right but all boats are a compromise no?
I know your 30 is very fast and I think she won the Ensenda race beating the entire fleet on first race but this cat offers a unique sailing experience and i for one would like to give it a chance and i would duck for that chance :-) thank you
Not going to mention those wishbone booms? I was looking forward to some heretofore unknown fact about them I was going to learn.
