My previous client went on stream and called me a fucking predator and abusive because I charged (and they willingly accepted) $2,000 a month for running their entire UA-cam channel by myself. I edited the videos, I made all the thumbnails. I did analytics and content planning. I was the one who responded to all the comments, I managed membership perks and playlists. Because of what they said, I've lost out on clients that I wanted to work with. Watching this podcast has validated my entire role. I grew that channel from 0 subs to 35k in a year and a half, and it's been one year since they let me go. They have a new editor, but they haven't grown a single inch and are still at 35k... I can't express it enough, how badly this affected my mental health. I deserved way more. Thank you for this podcast.

@@kirilladamenya It's been hard, I haven't looked for new clients, I've been working on my own videos. It was sort of traumatizing coming to the realization that I own nothing as an editor. All my work is owned by someone else, and they benefit from it when I'm gone. My role was much more than just an Editor. I was a channel maker. No reason I can't do the same for myself.

It's me Ed mentions around 11:30 haha. Didn't expect that. I've had the privilege of working with Ed across a few channels/projects over the last year and a half ish. One of the best clients I've ever had, and has recommended my name to a lot of people, which he never had to do but was much appreciated.
Working with someone who was 10x better at editing than I was at the beginning was a massive help too. I've stole so much knowledge and techniques from Ed it's unbelievable

    Great interview with Ed guys!
The issue with most editors and service providers is that people will commoditize us. Meaning if a client has choices over a few editors, they all look the same, and they will take the cheapest option. But when one editor starts speaking the same language as the client everything begins to make sense for the client.
I believe that if you only want to become an editor without learning the business aspect afterwards you'll be stuck on that level (pay will remain low) for a long time until you level up, or you get lucky with a client who truly values your talent and begins teaching you the pricing and business aspect.
My philosophy is people weren't meant to hone in on one thing their entire lives, but rather have one thing they are amazing at and keep learning additional skills to push their main talent. Like art it is difficult to be innovative. If our inspiration only stems from one genre/show once we begin mixing in different genre/shows we begin to experiment which leads to innovation.

This was really validating and insightful. I edit for a big UA-cam channel (now nearly 1.5million subs) and have been for almost 2 years now. I think I need to lean on the fact that I've been so loyal and consistent for them in addition to my other clients in asking for more money, possibly in a different format like you guys talked about

Thanks a bunch for this episode❤
I was laid off by a client I helped grew their channel for over a year. I literally managed the channel from idea curating to shoot the videos to editing to thumbnails to analytics to hook scripting. I was so under paid ($500/month) when we grew from 12k subs to 156k subs, I asked for a raise and my contract was just terminated, it really killed my confidence but this episode is helping me heal❤ Now, I'm just starting my own channel and trying to put in everything to my own channel. Advertiser here. I hate working with agencies knowing there are so many hard working and dedicated editors out there who deserve a better cut. At least from what I know, the problem is finding y'all is more work than it's worth. I can't wait for the outreach to come to me. Fiverr and Upwork takes so much time to sift through the garbage and most of those editors are not looking to do any dedicated anyways. Tell me where to find your work.

Hi Jason, you’re absolutely spot on. Now imagine a video editor from Nigeria (Africa), it could be really painful knowing that you’re being paid peanuts for your work but you have no choice than to give your best, cos you got bills to pay.
It is what it is. But I hope things get better.
By the way Jason, would you like to work with a short from video editor who is dedicated to his craft. I am one myself and I would like to work with you if you don’t mind. I’d be happy to share my portfolio with you.

I've noticed your cameras are always shooting from the same direction as your lights. It would likely be much more flattering on your subject if you had lights on the far side. Rigging lights just above frame in the background might be logistically difficult in this space, but thought it might be worth considering. Keep up the great work!

    I have a question for the team/audience:
I havent seen Stir advertised lately, and my team and i wanted to start using the credits and revenue splitting/sharing features that were advertised. But the "Split" link doesnt work on the site, and there is no "Credit" feature. Is anyone able to use these features? Or have solutions for automatically splitting ad revenue with their UA-cam team already?
