Look at the phrasing of the sentence ("Well, Kanye West obviously") and also how he says it. It was clearly meant as a joke. Maybe he's really inspired by him. I don't know. But still, you can't just declare every person limited and naive just because they don't know every detail about a person.

Removing that barrier of judging things as immature/unimportant easily will help people make progress in those fields and grow. A humility and acceptance that we don’t know everything. That’s what I got from his comment. if you want to dissect sentence for sentence what he said, and disagree with it then you can argue it wasn’t great but I’m not doing that.
Paul Hanneforth it was a joke which is why people laughed, but at the same time after he told the joke he came across serious and the audience didn’t catch that. They carried on laughing and the host said me too laughing, clearly sarcastically. Elon wasn’t necessarily being sarcastic, he was delivering his answer in a funny way. The audience didn’t catch that most likely because they weren’t laughing at the joke, but because they found the idea of Kanye West being an inspiration funny. There may be a good reason to that, but a big thing going against Kanye is that he’s a hiphop artist. People find it funny that he could be an inspiration because they don’t respect him or his artistry.

What I love about them two is that they’re both super innovative and have made waves in their respective industries. But Kanye seems to be more on the art/creative aspect of society and Musk is more focused on the technology. It’s an interesting dynamic. Hate Kanye all you want but he’s a lot more innovative than the average person. He’s always pushing big ideas just like Musk. It’s sad that I doubt we’ll ever be able to see other aspects of Kanye’s creative nature like his “architecture” of buildings. I’d be willing to see what he can do with it as he’s made waves in the fashion industry, I’m sure he can do it in architecture as well.

I have a lot more respect for Kanye West despite his many flaws than for Elon Musk. At least Kanye West is a truly self-made man with an abundance of original creative energy instead of just being the son of a wealthy emerald miner who simply invested in a company that he had no part in actually founding and then used a large team of engineers to come up with all the products he markets as his own.

Looking up to someone and being inspired by someone are completely different things. He's obviously not gonna look up to a musician, or anyone that's completely out of his lane, but he can be inspired by literally anything, in fact the easiest thing to find inspiration on is art.

It is clear he was sarcastic and joking Kanye might be a genius rapper but Elon started Zip2 (1995), X.Com(1999), Tesla (2003) and SpaceX(2002) already made millions, before all this he failed multiple times and bounce back, while Kanye debut album came in 2004. Regarding Kanye it was a matter of humble appreciation in Time magazine.

During that period both musk and Kanye were at the forefront of their respective fields. Kanye and Elon have similar ideologies, as you can see by what he wrote in his TIME article about him. Ergo, you can see how Aspects of Kanye west could inspire him. You’re looking at it from a view that you can only be inspired by people in fields that directly relate to you, which simply isn’t true, most people find inspiration in a variety of ways, I’d be surprised if you didn’t?
