  • Here is another Aoshima Knight Rider plamo build! When last we met, I was but a learner. Now I am the master! Well, not quite a master, since I made some mistakes. I did Season 4 before, but this one is Season 1. Plus, this time I'm installing the Aoshima LED unit for KITT's scanner!

      Yeah, the price of those scanner units are ridonk. I'm glad I bought a few when they were still a decent price, including KARR's orange scanner. I knew that Aoshima's warehouse was running low on the red ones and were already out of the orange ones, and that they had no plans to make anymore of them. So I bought a few for myself.

      I've only bought the official Aoshima scanners. For my Season 4, I believe I had dipped all of the clear parts in Future, so I thought maybe that was the reason why. Actually, I worked at Aoshima for 7 months, during which time I built this KITT model featured in this video to be used as a display model for the Wonder Fest event in Kentucky that year. I actually built this model for work, and recorded the build for this video.
      That year, they still had these LED scanner units in stock, but that was the last of them and they were selling out. I cannot remember the story clearly, but there was an electronics factory in China that was manufacturing them, which went bankrupt or something. Whatever the reason, they'll never have these units made again. I bought a few for myself with my employee discount, and I managed to get a KARR scanner (it's orange) on Yahoo Shopping Japan for a decent price, because those had already sold out and were climbing in price.
      The Back to the Future Delorean photoetch sets were made by a company in Korea, and that's something else that will never be made again. It's a shame. I had suggested that they make the effort to have these made again, but I was ignored. Pretty much everything I suggested was ignored, so thus I quit and went back to teaching and made far better money without the stress.

      @@stevethefishdotnet Yeah the scanners are rare & hope mine stays in good condition, ive had it since 2008 & its still going strong! I swap out the season 1 & 3 front ends & dashboards for different looks from time to time because i only have one scanner. I saw not too long ago a guy from Japan was selling the scanners on ebay but they were not from the model kit but looked like a exact copy! Were these left overs from the factory? They are re-releasing the model kits again just not KARR & not the scanners which is a shame!

    • @stevethefishdotnet
      @stevethefishdotnet  2 роки тому

      Did those scanners come in a box? Perhaps a stash was found somewhere. I remember while I was working there, a carton or two of the Mad Max Interceptors must have been found by a wholesaler somewhere and suddenly HLJ and other retailers had them up for preorder. People started contacting me, asking if Aoshima had somehow bought the license for Mad Max. I had personally pursued this myself when I travelled to Los Angeles that year and I knew that it was just not possible. Recently, Greenlight made their own "Interceptor" car but I believe they did so without using the licensed name. (Similarly, Fujimi released Blade Runner models without using the movie's name.)
      Anyhow, I don't know if those Mad Max preorders were ever fulfilled, but I suppose it is possible that a carton of those scanners could have been found in a warehouse somewhere and put up for sale. When I worked there, I was told that they were only going to focus on the Season 1 and 4 KITT cars as the Season 3 version was only slightly different. They also were not keen on releasing the Pursuit Mode. Something happened apparently, because after I quit, the not only released Season 3 and the Pursuit Mode models, but the Knight Industries semi trailer and KITT set (it's in some weird scale like 1:60 or something). AFAIK, KARR has been ignored.
      I believe Aoshima released two versions of KARR, both as unpainted and prepainted. As he first appeared, he was pitch black and identical to KITT the first time. Then later he had a repaint and was painted gray along the bottom. I was able to obtain Season 3 and KARR parts for "personal study" purposes from the parts department, but I just got a regular KITT body because Aoshima's prepainted KARR had it with silver along the bottom instead of gray. I figured I'd just mask it off and do my own. I also got a defective orange KARR scanner, although to my untrained eye I cannot see any flaw in it.
      The job didn't pay what I was used to, but one of the perks was that I was able to obtain model parts like that for kits I wanted to build for personal purposes. If the boxing department had spare, unused flattened boxes, I could snag them and build my own box since they were just unused leftovers going to waste.
      As long as I wasn't abusing the system to sell kits on my own like a jerkass, and as long as I wasn't just abusing the system otherwise, I was allowed to get kits I was interested in like this. It was rather nice. Then later after I quit, I saw the models that I had seen being developed in CAD. Five years have since passed, and I still contact a few guys from there who have also moved on.

These LED scanners are no longer in production, and Aoshima's warehouse has since been depleted of these. They now command a rather high price, so you most likely won't come across any without paying a lot of money.

    Hi again, so i found you season 1 build. I see you hqbe the same targa roof glas molding defect. Mine has it too. Im so afraid to smoke the windows. I habe no airbrush and i want to tint the rear windshield too. So if i mess up with this tamiya, then its removable with window cleaner? The plastic dont gets foggy or stuff? Im really thinking of buying the season 1 somi dont have to tint. By the way how comes that your season one dosnt have tinted windows from factory? Normally it should be tinted. I will customize this with led lights.

      @stevethefishdotnet  6 років тому

      Yeah, spraying with clears was very difficult for me. I had a lot of problems with this one. Then I learned to just wait until it dries before doing anything rash. I have Tamiya Smoke in a rattle can, but since it is lacquer, soaking it in window cleaner won't help any. Unfortunately, Aoshima won't make anymore LED units. I might suggest it to them, but I doubt that they would consider it. Their priorities are rather odd anymore.

      What did you use to spray paint the model with? What happened? Have you ever spray painted a model before? If you are using a rattle can, you have to begin spraying away from the model and pass over it quickly, back and forth. Never point the spray can at the model and push the button or else it will spray splattered paint and look horrible. Since I cannot see what you've done, I think you could wet sand your model. Depending on how bad it is, you can just wet some 800 or 1000 grit sand paper and smooth it out. Just keep that sandpaper wet with water.

    • @gaboaaa23
      @gaboaaa23 6 років тому

      ive used a spray can. First coat was ok, than ive sprayed secon coat...was okay. After the third coat ive watched the outcome and i saw that the lower segment of the door was not so shiny and you could see that there was not enough paint to make an even and covering surface. So i decided to take the car to the fresh air and give it another coat. That was the end......ive tried to spray only the part where some more paint was needed and te fog laid down on the other segments of the car too. So it started to getting mat(not glossy). Then i left it on the air to dry and the paint was getting a surface where you could see that the light is breaking unevenly like an orangeskin or somethin. I gues the cold air(10 celsious) did hurt the paint. So now i have a half striped down body. I tried to take the color down with nail paint remover. The plastic dosnt got destroyed. But the procedure would take a lifetime, becuse the paint is going down so slowely. I need some other stuff to remove it.

      The tamiya smoke requires about 3-4 coats (more depending on how dark you want the windows tinted) around 2 mins apart. Mask outer glass and spray the inner side. Works a treat.

      I took a closer look at the info I saw, and this time I read what is written in Japanese. Look at the bottom of the page:
      hobby.dengeki.com/event/1685728/
      June of next year it says, but this time it's a different device than before. Looks like it will come packaged with the model and not as a standalone unit, at least for the time being. It's a new electronics unit, and this time it will speak. I am guessing it will be the Japanese voice though. It says that
      As for the old version LED unit, those are long OOP as I mentioned. Your best bet to find one of those is eBay, but expect to pay a lot. You may want to get this new model when it comes out, or wait to see if they sell the LED unit by itself like they used to.
      Aoshima used to sell these Knight Rider kits as standard and deluxe versions. It says on the box that it comes with the LED unit, plus the box artwork is different. Even in Japan these go for a lot. About 4 years ago, I got the Season 3 version with the LED unit for a decent price at a secondhand store here in Japan.
