The way she speaks is powerful as though she really WANTS you to listen carefully. Even while writing the comment I can't mute out her voice like I do usually in storytelling video.
Heard this story in a workshop right before NSS, heard it again today... Reduced to sniffles both times :") Love the way she narrates stories, it always comes from such a genuine place!
Dear Sheena thanks for telling us something so deep in such a light manner. Loved it. I have always believed that my name and me are interchangeable......my name is my whole being and vice-versa and I am so sorry that you or anyone has to afraid of his own name......
They say Mumbai was the name of the place before british arrived....derived from the local deity Mumba Devi. Just like Madras changed into Chennai Bombay changed into Mumbai. As born an brought up in mumbai I feel proud of this name..... so do my muslim friends..... But sad part of our society is that the these two communities havent really came closer over centuries now....mostly due to politics ... but I'm really hopeful.....it will take time....will become one.....as a community.
It looks like a made up story of Mumbai. There wasn't any settlements except the fishermen in that area, infact those 7 island came up only after British came up with the Reclaimation project. Portuguese were the first to give a name as Bombay.
@@pop1487 there are many places in mumbai which are just the native names turned into english versions just because of the accent spoken by the invaders. Such thing is also available for mumbai converting into Bombay. But again it might be considered hypothesis. Before portugese came in places did have names such us Paral, chinchpokli, dadar, etc they are literal marathi words.....mostly names of native trees....lalbaug....but you womt consider them. You wont consider a name we named ourself keeping everything history n stuff aside and believe and accept a name kept by others.....good for you!
Well i wanna dedicate this piece to my medschool batchmate who assumed me to be a pak supporter in an india vs pak cricket match...and to the xenophobic professor who had chemical reactions on her face after hearing my name...#flashbacks
Can totally relate, and this might have happened to almost every muslim including me - the urge to say "I am Hindu" even when I don't want to. The dilemma of last name in India. If I start using my last name in here and give my opinion as a citizen to the government of our country, which is obviously my right, I would be asked to go Pakistan, because naturally I can't contribute to this discussion or any discussion for that matter because of my last name. Yeah even me, afraid of my own "Name".
My attention span is quite small many times... But when I listened to this story, I just shut the whole world and just imagined the story... However, I didn't get the last line.. okay they said sorry but what message were you trying to give as in what do you want the viewer to take away.... I would really like some sensible pov here...
They said, they can't wait to visit Bombay :) they had agreed to call it Bombay, and not Mumbai, and they was their way of apologising to the narrator - at least, that's how I interpret it!
They apologized for * Being ignorant and insensitve. * bad-mouthing islamic people in front of a muslim. * not keeping it a safe space for her to reveal her true identity.
I'm a Muslim female (bachelor) Doctor, working as JR in a Medical College. I was searching fr a flat. Me n my colleague (Muslim) finally got a flat on Rent. Land lord was happy k during this covid time atleast They got a source of income nd added benefit k we r doctors, so the elderly couple can easily access fr free medical advice. Lastly they asked my name... Nd real story start here.... They told me k u don't look like a Muslim, aap ko dekh k to lga hi ni k aap muslim ho. we are pure vaishnav Hindu, so we can't afford to rent a Muslim.... Bt still there is a solution, if u can hide ur identity n don't reveal to any rentier that u are a Muslim,u can live here easily. Nd i was shocked. They also offer tea to us in their drawing room. I'm still confused... Dharm bda ya paisa😂😂😂. Rkhna v chah rhe... Paisa ana chahiye or ye v gopniye rkhna h k muslim ko rent pe de rkha h flat. Kitne kamine log hn duniya me. Jinka koi dharm ni. Paisa sbse bda dharm h un k liye
May be due to stereotypes of society, they may have no problem with you, but their relatives or friends may feel that Muslims eat non-veg and all, they are veg, what if they are cooking non-veg in the apartment, Even a veg Muslim will be like, "Ya Allah yeh log apke kitchen me fish bana rahe hai, kese rakh liya kiraye pe".
Even i am afraid of my name : the moment you call ur self Hindu people consider conservative, modi bakht n create perception. Being in general category always had know the bar is high for me everywhere. No quotas no benefit. Shall we not preach actual equality.
In a way, this is reality for lot of lower caste people too; you are scared to tell your last name in fear that the others will instantly categorise you (and this skill is taught and honed in us since our childhood; and those who aren't are quickly given a crash course in it). And if you lie, you have to remember never to cross paths with them or remember which upper caste surname you used this time with this group.

And there are people whose initial name is also a matter of concern. They have no choice.
This is so heart wrenching..m so sorry 💔
Really? You do feel this way? What, in your opinion, a non-Muslim can do to make a Muslim feel more accepted?
This is disgusting to hear. I'm so sorry that you have to even remotely think of hiding your identity. It's terrible. I'm so sorry.

Ugh
Mentioning reservation was irrelevant here.
I'm in general category and I fully support reservation (Sc and St reservation only).
I would prefer to be considered Modi bhakt and conservative rather then terrorist, traitor, and go to Pakistan.
