Hi guys! How does the Madeira weather compare to the Azores and Portugal mainland? From what I've seen from most videos the Azores seem to have "English" weather quite a lot of the time...Thanks in advance for your time

How interesting to hear that Christopher, we've spend 10 weeks in Madeira this year and have rather fallen in love with it, but we're curious to know if and when island fever will set in for us.
@@ExpatsEverywhere Hi Josh and Kalie, not full time, we'd have spent 15 weeks in Madeira this year and we'll be there again in Dec' and Jan'. All the best to you both.
I just returned from Madeira and plan to move there first while I complete the residency paperwork. I fell in love with the island and thought Funchal was much more interesting than what you talked about. Since I lived on two Hawaiian islands, I understand the limitations of island life. The difference is that Madeira is much closer to the mainland and there are easy, inexpensive, daily flights to Lisbon. I think it all depends on what type of life you want. As a soon to be retiree, I think it would be a lovely home base with a beautiful environment with better air quality and a chill lifestyle. To each his/her/other own.

I’m a local - We Madeirans historically do not eat Espada with banana. That was created back in the 70’s / 80’s by some upmarket restaurant chef and then all restaurants started doing it for tourists. Today, everyone kind of enjoys it. However, I don’t know anyone that makes or has ever made that dish at home. And certainly, back in the old days, no one would know how to make “passion fruit jus”. Fruits are seen as a desert or eaten by themselves. Traditionally we do not cook them with savoury dishes.
Just to clarify one or two points, on the flight connections, for instance, there's flights to Madeira and out every single day, direct flights usually to Mainland Europe, like , Lisbon, Porto in Portugal, 2/3 times or more to other European Country's, UK, France, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Switzerland etc., there's a flight to Boston USA via Azores, there's a new one direct to JFK New York, any other flights, you need connections. Sandy beaches? believe it or not, there's two, ok, artificial ones, one his in Calheta on the southwest coast, the other one in Machico on the east coast. Finally, housing/prices, Funchal my hometown, yes, I agree, expensive for housing, outside Funchal much more affordable, obviously you need transport, bus services are pretty good and cheap, a car is the obvious choice, the road network is very good to.
Very well connected. We Came from Michigan using Toronto's airport. A dream island for me like Florianopolis. People asked why Sao Miguel and Madeira for a trip, are we Portuguese? Not at all, everyone was friendly and I speak like a Carioca and got around.
I was in Funchal this winter (january 2023) and it was awesome and great weather. For the most part the days would hang around 74-76F and nights would be about 50-55F. As you know, the hills add an extra 10-20F when you get going. Lol.
Thank You!! Several vids saying they did a Pro/Cons that just ramble about themselves etc…yall did a great job! Hope you have more on other towns on Madeira, we’re thinking of retiring there!
I’m from the UK and my dads side of the family are from Madeira and I visit every year, and every time I keep wanting to move there more. There is just something strange about it where the lifestyle is so peaceful and relaxed combined with such a fresh and clean environment. If I was to move I would probably live in one of the towns away from Funchal as much as I love it it has become a lot more busy than it used to be. Plus you’re never more than about 45 minutes away.

Thank you so much for this video. I know that I cannot afford to retire to Kauai… but Madeira is looking so much more affordable. It is also close enough to take visits to mainland Europe which is of interest to me. As someone who has always lived in tourist communities all my life, I’m interested in checking out Funchal and seeing if there is away that a small business might be a good fit for me in this community. I also want to visit some of the smaller communities around the island as I’m looking for a future retirement home and I like getting out into nature. The biggest test for me is: Will there be enough to keep me busy, so I don’t get island fever? I’m excited for my upcoming trip to Madeira, some of the things that you mentioned are what I’m looking for as I start to see retirement on the horizon. I still have the mainland on my ‘to visit’ list. You guys have me excited to do a future trip of Porto, Silver Coast and Lisbon. Thank you for your videos as they do help me add and cross off some places on my list!
I'm Madeiran and I had to move to the mainland in order to study (university). We have our universisty, but it doesnt have all the courses, obsviously... I've lived in the mainland for 9 years and I've returned home. I miss a lot of things (food specially) that I had in the mainland, but I couldnt stay away from home anymore.. So, yeah, an island its a small portion of land, its limited in space, but what you do in it only depends on you. And dont be afraid to ask the locals for places or anything really, most of us are nice. Enjoy!
Ahaaaaaaaaaaa 3:55 is where I live, how cool. :) Pretty much agree with all your points, although I do live here fine without a car as I enjoy walking everywhere, even the hills or groceries shopping. Definitely not possible/fun with a young kid. For the mountain hikes I always go with a guide who has a car so no issues there either. I'm in love with Funchal and the friendly people here. 29-years young digital nomad. :)
I’m much more of an Azorean kinda guy, but your video pretty much gets the main sell points for Madeira, so kudos to that! 🙂 By the way, the relationship between the archipelago and the anglophone world actually predates what we now think of as “tourism”: the islands have been a favourite winter resort for well-off Brits since the mid 19th century, and, curiously enough, Britain seriously considered downright annexation of the archipelago during the so-called “Peninsular Wars” (i.e., Napoleonic wars and the Hispano-French invasion of Mainland Portugal and subsequent flight to Brazil of the Portuguese Court with British help). The idea was to ensure control of the South Atlantic (just as Gibraltar ensured dominance over the Mediterranean).
Lovely video guys! Slight undersell on the beaches though.Sure they are rocky but the water is up there with the best in the world. It’s crystal clear, warm all year round and people still swimming in winter is commonplace. Most beaches have a concrete pier going into the ocean where people lie and tan etc. Outside of Funchal are some amazing surf spots on the west of the island and Seixal,Calheta,Machico all have sandy beaches. Keep the videos coming!
It's a good video, it's always nice to see the passion of people here. But, probably you need more time to understand Madeira. I've been living here for one year and I might raise a few points: - on renting, Funchal is expensive around the cathedral and in Sao Martino, everywhere else is cheaper than the price you mentioned - loads of tourists are limited to the city centre and são Martinho, everywhere else is as local as it can be! - if you move here, just grab a second hand car, you'll maintain it frequently with low cost at the many mechanics in the island, and you will enjoy the island so much. There is so much to see besides Funchal
Fair enough. Thanks for the compliment and input. There's a bit too much variety for us to cover more than Funchal in a video and in a week. Thanks for the comment. - Josh & Kalie
You're welcome. The other parts of the island that we visited were far less and are less expensive too so Madeira should be considered by people that enjoy island, subtropical life. - Josh & Kalie
You should check Porto Santo which is a smaller island and part of Madeira, in that island you have sand and no mountains. I think for me to be living in Madeira I would have a car, outside Funchal and on the south side. When I was younger I used to spearfish so I could stay there without the fever of a small place, but if was today I would have to travel to Portugal every year (the airfare used to be cheaper for the residents of Madeira and Azores, not sure now).
I enjoyed this video and want to visit Madeira soon! As far as being a tourist...I am a forever tourist and own it! I will love and contribute to my new home as I am, an American lucky to find my place in this fabulous country!!❤Portugal

Madeira actually has not a tropical climate, it has a sub-tropical climate. The temperatures that Madeira have in the Winter are actually lower than tropical standards - and I'm only talking about the Southern and Eastern Coasts, because the Northern Coast has a climate close-related with the one in the Azores and it's also not rare to snow in the higher grounds (mainly in the island peaks). Madeira has not a beach, however the neighboor Porto Santo Island has a really long 9 km beach.

Local here! Kalie got a wrong impression on "this is more of an island for hiking" than to enjoy the beach. Yes, we're not known for our white sand beaches but we do have black and yellow sand beaches. We just have a different approach; you'll see us in bathing complexes and in lava pools way more than in sandy beaches. We take summertime seriously, I mean, we are islanders, we love the ocean and the sun. There are lots of people who go to the beach the whole year and yes Kalie, we also "lay out on the beach all day". Living on an island, specially Madeira, is like being on vacation every single day and most people don't have that fortune

Great video, thanks. Most tourists/ Expats move to rural areas, mainly from Ponta do Sol to Calheta, less touristic and affordable. When speaking you may ask to speak in Portuguese otherwise they will talk in English, my mother is born on Madeira and in some places they talk to her in English and she can't speak English. I agree with you, most of the people that moved here wanted to be Isolated or near the nature/sea, living on a Island have its downsides, for many not dealbreaker but for others and if you want to travel frequently to the best option.
Great vid, very informative. I agree this place probably isn't ideal for young families. We're retirees, and definitely planning some long term stays. Thanks kindly!
Thank you guys for the information!! Madeira is definitely my speed. I'll be taking an exploratory trip in April, God willing. That fitness group looks like fun!
I´m really glad with Kali´s "no immediate expat" statement at 11:24. A special mentalitiy is required to live on an island. I visited Heligoland when living in Hamburg. It´s very small & requires a special mindset! But no reason to dump the idea. I disagree with the statement of NO yellow sand beaches. Right, Funchal has Fermosa with black sand, as the Canaries. But Machico´s beach has yellow sand (imported from Morocco😁). ¡thanks!
Ha ha! I guessed right that you would not ex-pat Funchal because it is very touristy. I was there several years ago and really enjoyed it but I also felt there were just so many tourists and too many people responded to my Portuguese in English. I would return for a visit though now knowing what to expect but still just enjoy the nice weather, good food and scenery. Just a side note, the time that we went to Madeira we had to do an overnight in the Azores where I had previously done a few trips. São Miguel seemed so authentic and nicer than Madeira. Great video guys and impressive to hear your Portuguese coming along.
Thank you, John. 🙏 We're working on it. We hope to make it to several places in the Azores and create videos there too. It'll certainly be in 2022 at this point. Thanks for sharing what you said here! - Josh & Kalie

Thank you for the very informative video. I disagree that swimming/sea activities are not ideal in Madeira. Yes, no sandy beaches... BUT, the feeling of being in a calm natural pool while the sea rages around you is something that can't be beat.

Leiria is a little too small for us but it's got all of the basics for sure. It seems to be a slower paced life and cheap than the larger cities in Portugal so your money could go far. However, you can get a taxi to take you to the center. Whether you'll be okay, all depends on what you want to do. Dear Expats your arrival in mass will as consequence make bigger corporations sink their fangs into the most popular cities and towns of Portugal and distort what was once something honest, down to earth and traditional to something more akin to what you might call a " tourist trap", and no I don't think its your fault, just a inevitable consequence of globalism and capitalistic endeavors . Therefore we the " Portuguese" will always be a welcoming people. Here are a few tips for all of you coming to Portugal, during summer everything is more expensive in the litoral specially in the sourthern part of the country and during winter its more expensive up north around the Porto region. For real authentic traditional food ignore big restaurants and focus on the family modest small restaurants or "Tabernas/ Cafés". Going camping or couch surfing is a good idea if you are low on cash, know people around the country here and there, or plan to sight see a lot. Booking an hotel room during peak tourist season will cost you way more than renting a small bedroom for a month or a few weeks so I recommend the bedroom.

Funchal is more of a destination for people who want to retire. Usually younger generations don't move there unless it's for work in tourism. There is some inaccurate information when it comes to gastronomy: 1-It's not common to eat filete de espada (the fish dish) with passion fruit sauce and a banana, that's a tourist thingy. Locals would never add passion fruit sauce on it, most probably would despise it and not call it traditional and also don't add banana to the dish. 2-The bread "bolo do caco", it's not typically eaten with meat or fish. It's usually eaten simple or with garlic butter that's what is traditional, whatever other version is just blasphemy to call it traditional.lolol 3-The drink "poncha" is done with aguardente and not rum.
Hello, I am madeiran and your information is not correct. 1- I'ts very common to eat filete de espada with banana, even in the more local places. Passion fruit it depends on the restaurant, but very common aswell around locals (just a bit more fancy). 2- Also not true, bolo do caco is tipically eaten with meat (mainly Espetada).. It's a big tradition for locals to eat "espetada with bolo do caco" in traditional festivals (arraiais). 3- This is true.
Sorry, Haru Haru and Pedro, we wanted to use a name that people would recognize as both aguardente de cana and rum are both distilled from sugar cane juice. - Josh & Kalie

However, I don’t know anyone that makes or has ever made that dish at home. And certainly, back in the old days, no one would know how to make “passion fruit jus”.
Fruits are seen as a desert or eaten by themselves. Traditionally we do not cook them with savoury dishes.
Thanks for sharing, Anna. - Josh & Kalie
I met a portuguese chef on Madeira and he said exactly the same thing!!!
I agree

Thanks for the comment. Depending on what your interests are, Madeira could work just fine. - Josh & Kalie
Thanks for sharing, J D! We appreciate your input. 😊 Much love. - Josh & Kalie
I’m much more of an Azorean kinda guy, but your video pretty much gets the main sell points for Madeira, so kudos to that! 🙂
By the way, the relationship between the archipelago and the anglophone world actually predates what we now think of as “tourism”: the islands have been a favourite winter resort for well-off Brits since the mid 19th century, and, curiously enough, Britain seriously considered downright annexation of the archipelago during the so-called “Peninsular Wars” (i.e., Napoleonic wars and the Hispano-French invasion of Mainland Portugal and subsequent flight to Brazil of the Portuguese Court with British help). The idea was to ensure control of the South Atlantic (just as Gibraltar ensured dominance over the Mediterranean).
Thanks for sharing that history with us, Paulo. The Azores are still on our list! - Josh & Kalie
Thank you. We'll do it. - Josh & Kalie
It's a good video, it's always nice to see the passion of people here. But, probably you need more time to understand Madeira. I've been living here for one year and I might raise a few points:
- on renting, Funchal is expensive around the cathedral and in Sao Martino, everywhere else is cheaper than the price you mentioned
- loads of tourists are limited to the city centre and são Martinho, everywhere else is as local as it can be!
Just got back from Medeira very beautiful place with stunning views , only one thing missing is the beaches

Thanks for being upfront about the “touristy” vibe in Funchal.
Thanks for sharing. We'll have to check out Porto Santo at some point. - Josh & Kalie

Canary island are more tropical and less cloudy than madeira
@@leonardosanchez5442 The Canaries are much drier than Madeira. Most islands have an "almost" (or have indeed) a desert climate.

Leiria is a little too small for us but it's got all of the basics for sure. It seems to be a slower paced life and cheap than the larger cities in Portugal so your money could go far. Hi Jessie, the answer is maybe. It really depends on where you are. If you're up on the hillside you most likely won't be around great sidewalks.

The food prices may reflect the fact you were there during low- or shoulder-season, not high season.
Some of the prices we saw were printed on a menus and not just written on chalkboard but you might be right. - Josh & Kalie
Don't think restaurant prices will change during low a high season, since this s not a seasonal destination

we are considering living there for a months with a toddler and I would like to know what facilities for children they have? How are the restaurants accepting them? are there children playgrounds?

Funchal is more of a destination for people who want to retire. Usually younger generations don't move there unless it's for work in tourism.
There is some inaccurate information when it comes to gastronomy:
1-It's not common to eat filete de espada (the fish dish) with passion fruit sauce and a banana, that's a tourist thingy. Locals would never add passion fruit sauce on it, most probably would despise it and not call it traditional and also don't add banana to the dish.
2-The bread "bolo do caco", it's not typically eaten with meat or fish. It's usually eaten simple or with garlic butter that's what is traditional, whatever other version is just blasphemy to call it traditional.lolol
3-The drink "poncha" is done with aguardente and not rum.
