I lived on Madeira years ago for eight months. Their society has problems like any other, but I still think about my loved ones and friends there every single day.
At one time, Hawaii's population was about 20% Portuguese, and Madeira was one of the principal sources of Portuguese labor for the sugar plantations. They knew how to farm, they knew how to handle livestock, and they were Christian, so they were desired as immigrants.

I visited in 1986. Absolutely fantastic trip. Drank Madeira wine for the first time. Sitting at a restaurant with a beautiful woman I asked the waiter, “what is this?” And he said, “it is the drink of love.”
I was there in ‘86 as well. I don’t drink alcohol but for me you can say the same thing about “Brisa”, their passion fruit soda. I visited again in 2007 and at my first restaurant meal I ordered two and asked they bring them both out simultaneously. They thought I was crazy until I explained it had been 20 years since drinking my favorite beverage in the world, they then laughed and accommodated me.♥️
There is a region in Tibet where the weather is so uniquely temperate that banana trees grow there .. unbelievable ! A country synonymous with cold ,icy ,snowy weather for much of the year ,can grow fruit more favourable to hot , arid countries. Mother nature ...she is a powerful old girl ..isn't she ?
I visit Madeira on a cruise tour to Europe during a trip From Miami Fl where Madeira was the first European nation to reach. Loved it. I wouldn't mind moving there to live.
A wonderful informative and educational video, thanks for posting. I have been to Madeira five times and would love to return. Such a beautiful and interesting island.
Fascinating about the Levada's , in South Africa there is a similar word in Afrikaans - "leiwater" and I suppose it probably has a meaning to the Madeira Levada's meaning "to take the water"
omg this is brilliant. i loved it but one of the most bizarre experiences there ever. i feel like it’s a portal. we nearly crashed three times trying to land the plane. then a fire just set ablaze on a big building one night in the town and everyone was just walking on by. then we had another strange experience with a restaurant which i won’t go into. brilliant black sands, amazing fruit market (loved the banana pineapple thing and the passionfruit) and the ride up to the magical botanical gardens. but, it definitely has a unique vibration for sure🧚🏼☀️🙏🏼👁️

The islands of the Azores & the islands of Madeira to me are not the Hawaiian islands of the Atlantic but the other way around :) . If there is a paradise on Earth it is these Atlantic islands & they must be protected by all not just the Portuguese people.
They cut the "tree" down, and another shoot that's been growing produces the next stalk. They aren't "trees" as much as the stems and flowers of a giant lilly plant. There's no wood...
It doesn't. it's not a 'tree' but the base of a giant plant of the lilly family. The stalks of bananas develop out of shoots that grow out from the base. A shoot is a "tree". To harvest the banana stalk, they cut the shoot down, but others continue growing out of the same base.
Nice film. Thanks. Unfortunately those style of water canals split the landscape and make it difficult/impossible for many species of small mammals, reptile, amphibians and insects from moving across the terrain. Many will fall in and can’t escape, drowning as a result. Great for people, not so much for wildlife.

@@Susan.I It doesn't. The "tree" is a shoot from a large base in the ground. Other shoots are developing continuously.
Each banana stalk dies off after fruiting, it's not a result of harvest.
