I am a spouse of a 100% disabled veteran due to PTSD! He enjoys camping to help with his issues. I feel like we spouses get over looked, I have PTSD from my trauma of the separation of his tours, raising our 3 small boys alone while worrying about him. I paint to try to deal with my anxiety.

    Hello, Justin
As a veteran of Vietnam and having experienced the difficulties many veterans undergo, I wholeheartedly support your idea. There is definitely healing in the creative experience and I know many veterans will thank you for leading them into a path of wholeness. At one point, I headed a local outreach of Pointman Ministries reaching out to veterans experiencing PTSD and I know first hand that providing structure and a focus on something positive provides hope and a way out of the depths which doesn't require drugs.
I will anxiously watch to see the responses you receive. Great idea and the idea of vets helping vets is a sure winner!
    Be blessed, my brother!

Wow Justin you are so real. I believe I have posted before how much you are helping people/me with more than just how to paint lessons. You put yourself out there for all to see. The fact that you are so open about your battles with depression does a ton of good helping people like me. We can hear and tell by what you say how real your depression is. That makes you so easy to relate to. I can see that you know the suffering depression brings us every day and yet we can see how happy you are most of the time. Gives us hope to see someone that fights the same battles and is coming out ok. Let's me know it can be ok for me too. And I know I am not alone you are already helping a lot of people.
I really appreciated the time you posted when you were really feeling down about people putting you down and saying you were a Bob Ross copy or want to be a Bob Ross painter. I was like bs bothers him too. Not everyone can be so open to say when something upsets them and has them feeling down. Then I saw how telling us about it brought you a ton of support and you felt better in no time. Again you helped all of us that are hurting daily
We saw you in pain how you were open and talked about it and realized how I should be open and talk about my problems so I too talked openly and found lots of support and felt better sooner than I usually do when I'm down. You are helping more people than you know by example. I have sent a few other Vets to your UA-cam videos. I think starting to paint in oil last June saved my life. I was in a dark place I hope to never slide into again. I wish you were not so far away I would love to learn from you. But I live in Hampton Virginia 3 Blocks from the VA Hospital.
You can call the local VA in your area and ask to speak with the coordinator they will put you in touch with the people that can help you get in touch with local Vets in need. They have many different organizations that help Vets they will be able to get you in touch with the Veterans that would benefit from your help. I have tried many things through the VA. The only one that helped me was "Healing Waters" a local group that got me out on the water fishing in a kayak back in 2017 I now go kayak fishing a few times a month. Fishing and painting are the only things that brings me any happiness in my life. What you are trying to do for the Vets is a good thing. You may in up charging life's in ways you can't amagin. Keep it up my friend John B

I agree with the idea that painting helps depression. I was 62 old when I found art and painting and I have never been happier with living. It has healed me. I also want to say that your pine tree painting instruction was very helpful. What was also very helpful was the mess you made at the end of this video. Sometimes techniques or ideas don’t work out and it was helpful to see that even experienced artist like you mess up sometimes. Thanks!

Your a great tutor! I could just picture your idea with helping our Vets go the distance... I hear painters always say not to quit a painting and not to get frustrated and give up on it... so take that advice yourself with your idea!! You are the power of one!!

I recently took up painting. I have been so hard on myself when I have to re-do a canvas, especially when making trees. I'm working on an area for the third time. I've looked at many videos of trees for something I can follow. Today's search brought me to this video. I had a eureka moment when I realized this is it. This is the best I've found - for so very many reasons.
Your words...you had me in tears. I now have a whole new reason to keep on painting.
This video meant more than trees, for sure. I didn't serve - knew some who did (Vietnam). I have PTSD from different trauma - related, but not the same.
I won't give up and I won't quit. And now I will take joy from smearing paint! Thank you from the heart for that.
I hope you have found your joy. You have a great heart, you're so talented, and your words have power. I want to donate. I hope I can figure it out.

I suffer from PTSD, and major depressive disorder and art saved me too! I was 45 before I ever truly tried art of any kind. I believed I didn’t have a creative bone in my body. Then my girls got me 8 art lesson for Christmas. I’ve not stopped since then. I wish I could open they same kind of studio you are talking about for veterans, abuse survivors, any traumatic survivors and recovering from any form of addiction. Keep up the dream and thanks for teaching me a way to paint trees without painting over it 100 times

I loved the last action, tapping playfully on the tree to make branches.

Thank you very much for these tips.
I do hope that you were able to do what you wanted to for the veterans. You're so right about painting and art helping with depression.
I enjoy art so much myself and if I'm anxious it helps calm me a lot.
