Walrus Audio Julia Vs. JHS Emperor V2

- This is an A/B comparison of 2 of the best chorus pedals on the market.
I recorded a riff into my Boss DD-500 to loop it for the most accurate A/B comparison possible.
Both of these pedals are loaded with features, I wanted to keep the video under 5 minutes, so due to time restraints I was not able to cover every single feature and combination of each pedal in such a short video.
Some features of the Walrus Audio Julia include:
-2 waveform settings sine and triangle
-Lag control, this feature lets you set the center delay time the LFO effect modulates from
-A knob that lets you blend between dry/chorus and chorus/vibrato allowing you to get a mixture of both effects
Some features of the JHS Emperor V2 include:
- 3 waveform settings: sine, square and triangle.
- EQ control that acts as a tilt. Turning to the right raises the low end, while turning the left raises the highs.
-Tap tempo feature with flashing LED to indicate tempo, even when pedal is not active
-TRS jack with mini switch to go between Tap/Exp
-Toggle switch to go between chorus and vibrato effects
Check out the A/B comparison of the vibrato effect in the next video!
Comment below what pedal you prefer!
I dig them both but I prefer how unique the Julia sounds. The JHS sounds like a really great version of a chorus.
Can't go wrong with either one
I like the clarity of the Julia, it's easy enough to dial in a warmer tone with my tone knob or EQ than have a pedal that permanently adds it.
Thanks for making this review appreciate!
The triangle waveform from the JHS sound close to the Boss CE2, thats the sound I really like. My Boss broke, so i might give the JHS a try
You deserve more subs with this kind of work.
Both sound great to me. I like that the JHS has the volume knob and square wave but the Julia lag knob gives some unique sounds
I've been debating between these two and I think the warmth of the JHS sounds more pleasing overall.
I personally prefer the Julia as it sounds great with the Slö, but I’m a very dream pop and indie oriented type of guy which makes me pretty biased haha
@@GDCDGC definitely the Julia
@@GDCDGC The JHS was designed to recreate it and the Julia does a pretty good job too but if you want 80's than the JHS is definately the way to go
@@GDCDGC Good decision, are you happy with it? Thinking of buying one too
@justin sytsma Yeah I find both sound great... but keep getting back to the Boss CE-2w. So I might just get that one. Which one did you decide to go with?
I like the chorus sounds on the JHS better, but that lag knob on the Julia and the Square Wave on the Emperor make these kind of unique pedals. Probably would like the Julia chorus as much if the lag knob had been utilized in the demo more.
Sounds like Julia has a little more depth/dimension? I had the JHS, very nice too.
Listening to this again I think comparing the Julia to a Boss Dimension C makes sense as the Julia has that two separate chorus signal sound that the Dimension C
The Walrus is cool, but be aware that it changes the EQ of your base signal. It “thins” out the sound slightly, which gives the effect an ethereal, some might say a slightly more “hi fI”, quality, to the sound. It takes away some of the “meat” of the sound. At first I thought it was the chorusing effect, but it’s really the pedal overall. If you listen closely you may hear what I am talking about.
They both sound great. I guess it would depend on the best deal but I do think Julia has a slight edge in my humble opinion.
its normal that the Emperor V2 modifies the tone of the guitar too much?? i tried putting the EQ flat and speed and depth on 0, but i've noticed that when i turn on the pedal it looses a lot of high and low frequencys... Also tried moving the EQ to match the tone as much as i could with the clean signal but it always sound very medius... Is that normal or is my pedal??
Both pedals are amazing! I think Julia has warmer and more dimensional tones to it. I’m also surprised how transparent and color-less tones you get with the JHS. I would pick the JHS for the overall tonal capabilities. It’s like guitar wit chorus and not the way around which I prefer. Great demo!
Just bought the JHS Emperor v1 for $80. The Julia was the chorus one wanted tho. After this demo, im ok with my cheaper taffy colored pedal altho i still may get the julia. Time may tell
Go for the Julia V2
If Julia had tap tempo it would be a no brainer. That's the only thing that the Emperor has over Julia.
Alan Crapo Julia has a lag knob though. I’m thinking of the emperor v2 or the empress by red witch !! I can’t decide
Currently borrowing a Julia and seriously love it
@@originaldevelopment That Empress by Red Witch is a beautiful pedal.
@@jonnymillerproductions i ended up getting the Empress ! Greaat pedal, has a slight buzz though :/ not horrible but am going to switch out for possibly Julianna
@@originaldevelopment I'd say that's a good decision. More control too.
Both are nice, but the Julia is more interesting and uniquely sounding in my eyes
The Julia is very different a little less subtle. I got the JHS Unicorn v2 and I'd probably be likely to get the Emperor as it has tap tempo too. Both sound good. I'm not a huge chorus guy
I WANT AN EMPEROR - separate volume control. For me avoiding that unwanted volume boost is important. just got a Blue Hippo which is great, EXCEPT For the very noticeable volume boost which I hate.
If you're stumped you might try an amp site like el34 world and go into their effects forum and ask or a site like tdpri and the same in the effects and present your problem if you're willing to do a little soldering, or you could also put it in a sidechain loop with a volume control.
@@LTJR. thanks for the suggestion!
hey man.... i never see that design on julia before is it a limited edition or what?????
Was pulling for the penguin but the other thingy had a but more pleasing modulation . . .
Jhs.... all day long
I would use JHS with my bright Vox and Julia with the 68 fender deluxe
No , no u would not.
@@ericramey6503 if you say so
Is JHS Emperor v2 a true stereo pedal (left and right side, true stereo) or are it's two outputs (TRS) actually 100% dry and 100% wet? Provided data is very confusing.
Expression pedal
I’ve heard you can use a trs cable to get stereo out
I like The Emperor
Just got JHS today but can’t compare as this is my first chorus pedal ever as I used multi effect boards only in past.
Overall I’m pleased to use single pedal effects.
Using it with EHX Holly Grail Plus with PRS ARCHON 50 tube combo amp and Gibson Les Paul Tribute and I’m falling in love more and mor every time I play.
Any refers for good Fuzz pedal .?
Ehx big muff russian is awesome for fuzz
If 6 was 9 fuzz, by solidgold pedals, has 3 option toggle switch for different tone, even treble booster, mad thing and not too expensive, works great with humbuckers too.
Julia has more 3-dimensional sound, more depth (more ¨chorus¨) and dry-chorus-vibrato knob is also an advantage. However, JHS although sounding ¨thinner¨ than Julia, has STEREO output, that puts it one full class above Julia - to me if it is not STEREO, it is not really an effective chorus. Also, JHS Emperor v.2 has TAP tempo, which is yet one more class above Julia - So, no brainer, JHS wins big time!
Well Said
Is tap tempo really that critical on a chorus though?
why would you want tap tempo on a chorus tough?
@@pierrem.7682 maybe because you want different tempo of your repeats? specially if you are using delay together etc, way more experimental with tap tempo
@@ArtyShat i like ramping stuff like the caroline somersault havoc button, or the Warped vinyl ramping button but tap temp just seems useless to me on a chorus. to each their own i guess :)
I think the jhs chorus is much warmer and is more mellow, the Julia is a bit more 'digital' and the sounds are generally more extreme.i s'pose you could call them trippier! The Julia has a different application-sick on some high gain arrpegios
Hmm, depth control on the Julia seems to do naff all!
Emperor only because you can get a really good Leslie sound.. you get a whole new sound without taking any real estate on the board.
my only criticism of how you did this would be to make their rate sound the same regardless of what the knobs say.
I want to know where that little tiny bit of music in the beginning goes...
Some Synthwave song, I've heard it before
It's an unreleased song from my band Sea of Tranquility
the eq please? :)
On the JHS I set the EQ so it would be a flat setting. The EQ feature on it acts like a shelf so if I turn it to the left it will raise the high frequencies and if I turn it to the right it will raise the low frequencies.
I bypassed the amp and just did a direct input to record the tracks. (I didn't want to color the tone any with an amp)
Thanks for the explanation
analog or digital?
Julia is far more “three dimensional” sounding. Sounds more layered and almost even stereo compared to the emperor. Julia all day
The JHS sounds much better. The Julia sounds very processed. Digital.
Yes and the Julia sounds super digital with drives! I love the 🐧 for the volume control and the versatility..the lag knob on the Julia just makes it
Sound even more digital to me.. I don’t really think it’s analog lien they say it is.. now the jhs has the bucket brigades
No real significant difference
