How do you get used to memorizing the fretboard enough to understand where a minor 3rd or 5th is from a note?

It's helpful to know a bit about intervals. Each fret is a half note up from the last. So a minor 3rd is 3 frets (aka half notes) from the root. A perfect fifth is 7 frets (half notes) from the root. And then it is super helpful also to know that the guitar is built in fourths, so each string on the fret is a fourth from the lower string.
I would really recommend learning the major scale and just practicing that, coming to an understanding of how it works. Learn songs you love, that will keep you interested and engaged.
