Trying to FIX a SPLASH-PROOF SHOWER RADIO

  • Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a radio that can be used in the shower. I am thinking it might be WATER DAMAGED!!! Let's take it apart to see what the fault might be.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

I already had one "waterproof" shower radio with water damage. It was completely rotten inside. And I wanted to replace it with this exact model, which is also advertised as waterproof. Might have to look for another one. Thanks for your many videos :)

I wonder if they make a radio that the main unit is outside and has a external speaker you can mount in the shower? At least if the speaker does get ruined you could just buy a new speaker instead of the full unit.

Check the IP rating before you buy. This splash proof radio is advertised as IPX4. So it is rated to withstand splashes of water, but no protection against contact and ingress of objects. So general wear and tear will significantly reduce the water resistance.

    .... Well done Mate,
I think the external antenna is only for FM, and the DAB antenna was the printed circuit left side back pcb.
I'll stand corrected if anyone knows for sure.

I love that you don't focus on one particular item to repair and look for everything that seems like a challenge or could be fun and the big plus is you learn from the videos how certain things work. Watching you for a while and the videos have really grown on me. Keep up the good work and never stop being curious! :)

Hey Vince, awesome simple repair. It amazes me the things someone may let go of that with a little know how can be made operational again. I always find it interesting that Li based batteries are used in electronics that will be near water. Their safe, but if the cells are damaged and water gets into them Li reacts strongly with water.

Hy Vince! Try using a magnet over the plastic/lables so you could see if there are any hidden screws you've missed. I epect that on metal ones this will work.

The corroded screw looks like a mixture of cheap zinc plating and galling where two different types of metal react, e.g. cheap zinc or nickel plate against brass and add moisture and manky screw time all round.

Hey Vince, I use a product "Scotch 6042 Sticker & Marker Remover" to remove permanent marker. It comes in a form of a pen. I don't know if it would work on a rubberized surface or not, but in my opinion it's still a good product.

I think it looks better than even a John Lewis with a scribbled orange marker, shame the rubber coating has to be removed though. I think it is the manufacturer preventing fraud, by someoe buying a new radio, and taking the broken one back to the shop for a full refund, and probably a tell tale sign that it has been resold as spares or repair. It is a neat idea, but also puts people off just simply doing things like repairing broken technology because of the mark on the item, and being harder to get rid of the mark than repairing the item.

I'm fairly certain the point of failure for the waterproofing was the plastic flap covering the exterior of the switch (the part that would be in contact with the giant spring). If you were willing to try to take it apart again, you could glue that down a bit better.

Dry Erase markers are Whiteboard markers, and usually will let you clean permanent markers off some types of plastic. I suspect the permanent marker was absorbed into the rubberized coating much more than it would on most plastics.

We use permanent markers and dry wipe markers at work to rotate the dates for deli food when we open new food
It does work, but that has been on there for so long that it's likely stained on there now
And honestly I think it was the alcohol in the dry wipe that removes the permanent ink so if the IPA didn't work the dry wipe probably wouldn't have anyway

I guess this radio took a bath or was dropped into the tub but caught before it was submerged.

The reason a dry-erase/whiteboard marker can erase a permanent marker is because they include alcohol-based solvents; the solvent reactivates the cured marker, so it can be wiped off. Pretty sure IPA would work just as well, if not better.
