We have a Public Lands near us just NW of Atlanta (Kennesaw) that’s literally across the street from an REI and very close to a Contes Bike Shop that sponsors my Georgia Cycling Association team. I think it’s fine for Giant to bring their stuff here as we do not have a local dealer anyway.
Giant is pretty excellent to deal with for shops. We've been selling them for many years - always loved the product and the moves they make definitely appear to keep the local retailer in mind more than most of the moves made by other big brands.
Tho I’m 4100 miles away from Nort Carolina, I still find this interesting. Just dropping a comment to show my support and appreciation for your content. That guy from Oslo, Norway ✌️
Thanks for the video! Im fairly new to the sport, and need 2 new bikes for myself and daughter. Been considering used bikes or a dtc brand, but also want to support my lbs so might go with giant.
I don't shop there because the two here in town stop selling guns, ammo, and hunting clothes. If I want a bike I go to the guy down the street or the guy a couple miles down the street, or I may buy something off of eBay. Except I don't buy anymore guns for deer hunting, got all the ammo I will ever need in my lifetime, and enough blaze orange stuff to wear unless I get fat. I mean fatter LOL. I mostly go fishing now
why giant moved in I have no idea, but speaking as a dicks Sporting goods bike mechanic I can tell you that gt pulled out because of PON and Pacific cycle deciding that mongoose bikes are ultimately more profitable. PON owns a ton of bike brands, like gt, mongoose and Schwinn, and dicks has a contract with PON to sell their bikes and manufacturing of nishiki to be done by them
I'm old enough to remember when Giant wasn't well-known at all. Of course, they have become a huge brand name since then, maybe too huge. It will be interesting to see how much the brand name suffers, if at all, from this move.
Interesting - So have you been to small town America recently? Hardware stores have closed. Local grocers have pulled up stakes. WalMart is in town. Walmart sells name brand stuff in quantity at lower prices. Local shops close. If you were a big bike company that wanted to sell lots of bikes, wouldn't you take a look at this? Instead of dealing with all this myriad of small bike shops, might it not be easier to simply cut a deal with the big box stores and simplify your supply chain? I've been in bike shops many times where I am the only customer. I've been in Big Box stores with many customers. Big bike company bikes will be seen by many more people in the Big Box store. Do local bicycle shops really differ all that much from all these other mom and pop shops that no longer exist? Like Beau says, "It's just a thought."
Bike comps. Are getting to the point where the stores like dicks or target or Walmart. This way they can reach more people to get into bikes and bussiness smart you make it so more people see it. So why not promote it in a lot of other stores. Rei is good for Nikes they have a bike mechanic there. That makes Rei. Better. If you have higher end bikes you need a mechanic or bike shop in the store it helps people. Not like Walmart who have the regular smojoe building up the bike.
let's be real; Dick's Sporting Goods reports record Q3 (2023) net sales of $3.04 billion and Q4 is probably going to be higher...that's why. They are getting a lot more customer face-time in a store like that.
Just clarifying a few things you said. These “25” stores are not mostly on the west coast and not in North Carolina. That is completely FALSE. We are in Fayetteville, North Carolina. There is a Dick’s House of Sports less than 2 miles from us. You stated they were only going where there was no local representation. This is also COMPLETELY FALSE. We have carried the full line of Giant bicycles since the mid 1990s when they first entered the US market. We are a large Giant dealer. We represented the line extremely well. It was done by a mere stroke of a pen from Giant corporate with no consideration of their current partners they had and their lively hood. You stated they were not going places that directly competed against their network of independent bike dealers. Again, completely FALSE! They are now not only in direct competition with us, but the Giant area rep does not receive any commission from bikes sold in Dicks House of Sports so they are now taking away from their own employees too. Don’t believe what the letter initially stated. Their letter states it was only going to be kids, mid range mountain bikes and some e-bikes. It was confirmed by their south east rep in person to me that they will also carry road bikes like their Contend bikes. The Dick’s House of Sports has plans to open close to 100 dealers within the next year or two. Our local Dick’s was remodeled to become a House of Sports last year. If you are close to a Dicks, that may happen to you too. Don’t be fooled!
I have noticed recently that what Giant initially told me may not be true. I'm going to contact them, do some more research and do an update video as well. After some more research I'd love to ask you some questions about your shop and the relationship with Giant! What lines are you currently carrying?
I vowed not to buy a Giant after hearing how they screwed over Schwinn with backhanded business practices before other big brands. Now they are screwing over IBD’s. My sponsor shop picked up Giant after Specialized screwed them over with the online buying portal for bikes taking priority over their shop’s special order and inventory requests. Now they are gonna get screwed by Giant.
Good point. I bought a Schwinn many years ago that was built in Chicago. I just kind of wonder who Schwinn screwed over when they got Giant to build their bikes all those years ago. Maybe it was just business to both companies and nothing personal.
@@daniellarson3068 it wasn’t personal when Schwinn canceled their contract with Giant who was producing their frames. However, after that happened, Giant used the Schwinn designs and put their own name on them and started reaching out to Schwinn dealers to carry them.
I still miss the 90s when you could go to Sport Authority and buy all kind of quality bikes, shoes and every thing .... Dick's sucks. Cheap ass bikes ( Walmartlike ) and ugly shoes.
I have two Giant's good bikes but, I am bit leery how about how they do business let just say there was a small local dealer who's bill was paid and Giant dropped them a while back. The partnership could be good but, they could go down hill is what concerns me and probable many other.
What do you guys think about this recent partnership?
I don't like it personally as I think it devalues the brand and will detract people buying the higher end bikes.
This is going to have to be watched.
I ride a 2022 Giant Trance X3 27.5" .... I believe it when I see it.
About 5 years ago you could pick up a Cervelo at Costco in Japan. The world didn't end.
That’s a good argument.

I couldn't agree more. Out of the big brands to carry, Giant has always given us the most support.

My guess is that GIANT moved in, because GT moved out.

@@evanresek7865 That’s kind of what I figured. But, it’s still somewhat confusing.
Cam, I see where Giant released a new Anthem for $4500. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on it. I’m kinda interested in it. TIA.👍🏻
Scheels is like a REI. There are 34 stores.

Local bike stores are selling out to Trek, Specialized, and Giant.

@@letour32rrI guess that couldn't have lasted long. It seems like all the Schwinn dealers disappeared not too long after that. Thanks
My first bike my grandfather bought for me was a Schwinn in 1974 before I could even ride a bike I was like two years old
