I love that iBDW is finally seeing tournament results that reflect his personal journey. The words he had to say right after the Leffen set were great to hear. His worth wasn't tied to his performance.

@@lucasvca iBDW was watching a tournament shortly before Summit on stream and someone in chat peer pressured him into betting between Hbox and someone else in a match; loser had to donate to Amouranth. Not only did iBDW lose the bet, but then that chat member donated to her as well to have her write iBDW's full name on her. His donation message has been a copypasta as well, he's got a video on his UA-cam channel that goes through it all.

There is an EXTREMELY high rate of abuse of drugs in the melee community and it’s almost encouraged tbh. Not by anyone of the top 100 but I know people in the top 100 who have abused ads.
It’s almost like baseball/football or ufc/bodybuilding.
Aaron Hernandez was being juiced up before every game so that the pain he felt from the hits wouldn’t hurt as badly. It was incredibly illegal iirc. Anyway, he was a kid and someone told him that this one thing might could make u better.

I love melee. And I love the smash community. I love trans people. I love gay people. I love anyone who loves melee. I don’t want to CAUSE conflict but I feel as though at times that I have to speak up about my feelings on these issues. Anyway merry Christmas.

I don’t know when smash summit happened, I’m actually not an expert on smash tournaments in particular. Just wanted to point out the fact that the thumbnail looks like 2 copies of the exact same character model from an AI, except one is statistically “average“ physical stats, while the other has “above average“ physical stats.

I have a lot of respect for Magi and she is really an incredible player. I dont want to generate hate, I want to say that first but I have an issue with saying she's the first woman to be in her position. Women and men's brains and body's are different and to say that shes the first woman to do so, doesn't that take away from the first non trans woman to accomplish the same feat or even make it harder? I love everyone all the same. This is not hate speech and I completely respect Magi and her accomplishments but I feel there should be a distinction just like men and women. It's ok to be who you are but that doesn't change biological factors that you can't control. Am I alone? I really don't want to offend anyone but I do think this is something that's important.

Also melee is a video game, which makes it extremely different from irl sports in terms of the skills you need for strength in-game. I think a cis woman would have done it by now if the community was more friendly to all genders instead of being creepy or sexist. Also magi is a woman, because trans women are women, and even the notion that biologically people’s brain structures are different based on sex is sexist.

why? This tournament had like 3/4 of the Top 10, a $50k prize pool, and every single player in attendance was at least a Top 100 level.
Eh. It had Mang0, Zain, iBDW, Wizzy, Leffen, Amsa, hbox, Kodorin, Magi... you can pull whatever official definition you want out of your ass, but it can't really contradict the reality of the attendees.
@@pac_rby It has a very small number of players there, so there's a far smaller element of "beating all the good players, bad matchups and wildcard performances on your side of the bracket". She had to beat good players, true, but qualifying is usually the hardest part of Summit (and being a trans woman could well have given her that popularity boost- it's easier to launch a campaign around being the first trans woman than one around being a decent Falco main).
Who cares, I'll cheer all the louder when the first woman to reach a Top 8 spot at a traditional supermajor. As for now, I'll say she is the first woman to reach the top 8 of a major (unless there's some other example, in which case feel free to correct me), and celebrate something that many authorities (e.g. Liquipedia) consider as having actually happened.

The main reason trans women are better in esports than cis women right now is because growing up in male-centric cultural spaces caused them to be more likely to develop the motivation and skills to compete. I will admit that for a game like melee there are biological factors like hand size and reaction time which could also make cis women less likely to be able to compete at top level, but I don't think these discrepancies are meaningful enough to rule out cis women from the top level of play, it will just make them more rare. That is to say, I don't think that Magi's success should be treated as a falsity just because she's trans. It's a great achievement, and it will hopefully inspire more women, trans and cis, to pick up the game. In a decade or two, the amount of top level female esports players is going to go up a lot, because it was only recently that women have started growing up in and or being introduced to video game dense cultural environments. A game like melee might be one that lags behind in this way because it's old, but generally I hope this will be the case in esports.
