- Reporter Tina Wickliffe finds out what drives war historian Monty Soutar as he leads preparations for the opening of the memorial house commemorating the Tairāwhiti cowboys of the 28th Māori Battalion
So proud of all the men and women involved. Awesome respect to Kiwis and Maori. Thank you also to Peter Jackson this will always be remembered.
Monty Soutar is a national treasure.
They all deserve to march in front of us serving Defence members. Great work Monty, Rayner maa. Thank you for considering me for the recent march in Gisbourne.
Inspirational makes me proud
It makes a grown man weep. Rawe
Thank you for sharing this taonga in memory of our Te Hokowhitu a Tu & 28 Maori Battalion Soldiers who fought bravely on the battlefield in WW1 & WW2...
Had goosebumps & raw emotions watching this in 2021 Anzac Day.
Kia Timoti don't get much time to watch t.v.these days so would have missed this one. . Maybe i should slow down and smell the coffee. Thanks very much appreciated

Mean brothers that was fucking awesome... Mauri Ora koutou
As a white New Zealander, I am ashamed of the way we treated the Maori people. I am proud of the Maori people and love them.
We love our European brothers also
@@MrSicc274 Thanks, boss.
The price of citizenship.human life.
Once we're the true warriorrs proud to listen to what Maori battalion fought for and died for true worth of sacrifice of belief
🤠🥰😇 nga " tangata-whenua " o te tiriti... Ō nga ūri o porau-rangi aoteroa nui, taitai te maunga' ngāti-porau : kia ora koutou katoa kia tātau...
Please don’t forget the Pakeha Battalions: 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th…..
My father fought in the 20th battalion ……he had Great Respect for the 28th Battalion. The 20th suffered a 39.6% KIA. The 20th Battalion was a South Island Pakeha Battalion. I am proud of my Pakeha family history.
So the 28th Battalion was a small part of NZ’s participation in WW2; but a well deserved one! But Please don’t forget the other 10 Pakeha Battalions, it about respect.
What heck bro this is about the maori battalion on anzac day how many tv shows on main stream do they show about the maori battalion not many if any and i have watched alot of anzac day programs so leave it out know one forgets the others my pakeha uncles served in ww2 and one of my maori uncs is still on crete forvever
My father came home had 15 of us. Then fought to retain our whenua. Mat Rata defeated him.
Can’t believe how quick these young boys were to answer if war was to break out that they would go in a heartbeat. I don’t know whether to think how brave or stupid. That’s exactly what the pakeha would want, young Maori men they don’t have kids to go out there and possibly not come back to weaken their population for the future. No one gains anything from going to war except a few who make money out of it.
When the 28th Maori battalion returned home, they were made to jump from a moving train, while the white boys had parades.....citizenship lol
What Citizenship?
