This means that certain places can have a particular celebration on some particular day or period that may not be found or practiced in some other places. Same goes for some rites, per example in some Eastern Catholic churches that are, technically speaking, orthodox in rite but are in communion with the Pope and the Vatican, those may practice them rites in slightly different ways, like infant baptism, where in the roman rite the priest pours water three times on the head of the infant [usually with a shell], while in some of those other rites they may quickly submerge the infant fully in water. Stuff like that, but the Church allows it for in its divine wisdom it understand the necessity for local traditions too. I don't know how others feel but I would so pay for more video content about this. You do a great job for the primer and then then bring in the catholicism series to solidify those.
Beautifully done. I was raised Catholic and we hung out with the nuns (I carry the name of an incredible nun who was a friend of my mom). I experienced changes of Vatican II as a youngster; then came the Jesus Movement where I gave my life to Christ in a big way; then Protestant Bible College. Church history was taught, but the focus was more on the Reformation and who came after....not much on early church fathers (guess that was for grad students). In recent years, I listen to more Catholic teachers and pastors than I do Protestants, because I feel most evangelical churches have become too entwined politically. (I know...can of worms😮) But if I have a point in all this rambling, it is that God’s Love is unconditional and His faithfulness is forever. It is the power and working of the Holy Spirit throughout history; and He is certainly working in our day. I am so grateful to get a small peek at this in my short years. Hallelujah. My prayer for all believers, no matter which denomination they are in, is to keep seeking Jesus Christ and His Kingdom, and love one another. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul and all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31. By this, the world will know we are His disciples. Thank you Fr. Casey. 🙏🙏🙏

I was a cradle Christian. That is, I went to church with my parents and my siblings because that's just what people did on Sunday morning. I hadn't given a lot of hard thought to what I actually believed until I found a book by C.S. Lewis in a boot-camp library. That book was "Mere Christianity". As soon as I could, I bought my own copy. Since then, I've bought every book written by C.S. Lewis that I could find. He had a talent for defending Christian theology in clear and entertaining terms that made sense to me, and gave force to my faith; lending logic and reason to the prompting of my conscience. Then, though C.S. Lewis, I found the writing of G.K. Chesterton. His point of view added humor and emotion to my understanding of Christian theology. I still hunt for more copies of his works, whether in hard copy or digital, because I believe he still has more to teach me. Keep learning, brothers!

@@pasalasaga The following points are helpful to consider, proceeding step by step, steadily but without stress, relying firmly on the help of God, our loving Father, not on the own forces: 1. To get out of bed at the time planned before and to offer the work, joy, pain, family life, sports, recreation etc. of the new day to God, uniting them with the Sacrifice of the Lord, sacramentally made present in the Holy Mass. 2. At least 10 minutes of meditative prayer (mainly: meditating His Word and listening to Him) before eating breakfast or beginning to fulfil the duties of the day. 3. Working in service to God and men, with competence and the effort to fulfil a perfect work, with concentration, spirit of service, using the time well, accuracy, striving to practise the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity, prudence, justice, strength and temperance ... 4. Encounter with God and the Holy Mother of God at noon praying the Angelus. 5. If possible, to assist at the Holy Mass daily, not only on Sundays, receiving the Lord in the Holy Eucharist, if the requirements of the Catholic Church for the reception of this Sacrament in personal dignity are fulfilled, and to hold a time of thanksgiving after the Holy Communion (10 minutes are recommended) . 6. At least 10 minutes of meditative prayer in the afternoon or the early evening. 7. If possible, to pray daily the Holy Rosary. 8. To maintain the presence of God during the day, praying frequently to God with very short prayers, for example acts of thanksgiving. 9. To serve the others, especially our family members, our friends and colleagues, with joy and to try as a friend to lead them closer to God, respecting their freedom and their actual capacites/willingness to accept the Truth, and counting above all with God's grace. 10. To conclude the day with an examination of conscience, giving thanks to God for His help and begging His pardon for the committed faults, with a little, exact proposition to obey God more in a specific ascetic point. 11. To go frequently (for example weekly or monthly) to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Confession. 12. To seek and maintain a regular and sincere spiritual accompaniment with a experienced spiritual guide. - A good example is the life of Pedro Ballester, a student who died of cancer in the fame of sanctity. There exists a documentary about his life which is publicly accessible.
One of the better sum-ups of catholic history, but I think you glazed over the events of 1054. Considering this was a much larger church divide than the reformation it's a bit important to explain the reason for the divide.

It seems that there is debate about this. If you search "official religion of Rome" into Google, the first thing that comes up is an article from PBS saying Constantine did this in 325, followed by a few others corroborating this. I was taught this in my church history class, but other sites mention Theodosius. I'm guessing there were similar decrees in each time, the second one taking root.
I think Theodosius must have made Christianity the official religion. Constantine being a politician may not have made such a sweeping change even before the majority of the population had converted to Christianity. Some of the monuments constructed during the early phase of his reign had depicted the Roman gods. BTW, Constantine himself is supposed to have been baptised just before his death.
The word Catholic is derived from the Greek adjective, katholikos, meaning "universal," and from the adverbial phrase, kath' holou, meaning "on the whole." The first use of the term "Catholic Church" (literally meaning "universal church") was by the church father Saint Ignatius of Antioch in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans (c. 110 AD). Seeing the church was spreading in multiple nations He termed it Catholic-universal-church. The true church founded by Jesus Christ have Bishops and Deacons. Philippians 1:1 KJV Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the BISHOPS and DEACONS.
Great video. One correction. Emperor Theodosius established Christianity as the official religion of the empire in 380 AD, not Constantine. 325 AD was the year of the Council of Nicea.
OH BOY! Catholicism in Focus is back. (youtube failed to tell me). the video is largely hopeful in outlook. and also i'm hopeful for more videos like this. thanks.
Just for clarification, 325 is not when Christianity became the official state religion of the Roman Empire…. That happened in 380 with the promulgation of the Edict of Thessalonica…
You are correct. It was under Theodosius. He said. "It is more important to be a member of the Catholic Church than to be lord of the world. " Source - City of God (Agustine)

Thank you Casey for the church history. Is there a way for the TLM to return to every parish or have a future pope update the 1964 version of the TLM mass?
Most priests these days aren’t trained in TLM, they don’t even have training in Latin anymore. Furthermore, it makes no sense to do TLM without ad orientum and many newer churches are not built that way anymore. So short answer: it’s improbable, but nothing’s impossible. You never know right?
@@ntmn8444 not even "new churches" only medieval churches were build ad orientum. Since Gothic structures became dominant churches stopped being oriented. I mean some still could be, it also could be done on accident but if a church is any newer then c. 1400 its' rather not oriented.
I do think the crusades were skipped over & had a significance in church & world history deserving of more than a mention. I’m talking 1-2 minutes, I understand the need to keep this short. But that felt like avoidance. The reintroduction of Greek philosophy was part of the relationship with Islam. It’s an important era & since he doesn’t shy away from the mistakes of the church, I don’t know why it would be ignored. Otherwise, I really appreciate this video & how much he managed to include. It’s an exceptional introduction and an inspiration to further thought. Can’t really ask for more than that (except a few sentences about the crusades). A truly thorough summation. I can’t imagine it being done better, or much more being inserted within the time frame without it becoming confusing. I’m sharing this with a few people. Wonderful job.
Great video! I also wish more attention would have been given to the Protestant missionary activities of the 19th century which largely helped Christianity to become the one geographically worldwide religion
@@foodforthought8308 Oh.. I haven't heard of that. Could you please tell me more on that. There is no one Protestant Church but many denominations which never agreed among themselves. So, this could be is unlikely. 2 biggest empires Spanish and Portuguese (Both Catholic) which lasted from 14the century to 20th century spread Christianity to all parts of the world. People were evangelized by Catholic missionaries. They build Churches, did charitable works and brought the word of God to unknown people. America was discovered under Spanish empire and evangelized the new region.
Great video! Concise yet informative and done in an engaging style. Your content and delivery are much appreciated. One point on the Insitutional section: Lactantius in "On the Deaths of the Persecutors" (De Mortibus Persecutorum) and Eusebius in "Ecclesiastical History" (Historia Ecclesiastica) both detail the Edict of Milan in 313. Eusebius, in "Life of Constantine", emphasizes Constantine's role in calling for the Council of Nicaea in 325. I can find no source that makes the claim that Constantine made Christianity the official religion. The Theodosian Code (Codex Theodosianus) details that Theodocius I issued the Edict of Thessalonica in 380 which made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. If I have this twisted, please point me to a source that convinced you otherwise and that can set me straight. Again, thank you! I follow your Insta as well and I sincerely appreciate your content.
Other than that, we are all the exact same and profess the exact same dogmas and doctrines, as you well said. Universal, indeed!
@@dvdortiz9031 that not what "Catholic" refers to by the definition of Universal.

I am a protestant, but I enjoy learning about differences in denominations. Thank you for what you do.
First time I heard the "power vacuum" explanation for the circumstances that led to the great schism, thank you for the information!
Yeah, it’s a fascinating topic!
I don't know how others feel but I would so pay for more video content about this. You do a great job for the primer and then then bring in the catholicism series to solidify those.
Fantastic overview of Church history! Thank God for the Catholic Faith!
Amazing accomplishment!! Keep Catholicism in Focus coming! Thank you so much, Fr. Casey!!
I support him
Beautifully done.
(I know...can of worms😮)
But if I have a point in all this rambling, it is that God’s Love is unconditional and His faithfulness is forever.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and all your soul and all your strength.
The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:30-31.
By this, the world will know we are His disciples. Thank you Fr. Casey. 🙏🙏🙏
And i guess you're cool with worshiping mary. PS not in the Bible.
@@ashbyt1 It is amazing that despite 1,7B people saying that they do not worship Mary but venerate her, protestant still cannot understand it. I mean I don't really expect protestant to be logical when you are either beliving in predestination, which is nonsense or follow Sola Scruptura which is unbiblical in itself. Etc.
Anyway, your heart is closed, so I won't try to convince you. Facts are that Catholics do not worship Mary, but venerate her as she was mother of Jesus. No1 calls her godess or something. That is why it isn't idolatry - as some protestant say, that are unable to read. Idolatry is a sin of worshiping other gods. Mary is not worshipped and she is not consider a god. Call it praising or venerating.
I know you will keep denying the truth because protestantism has it's foundation on strawmening other religions but you have a free will to do as you please. So have a nice day mate.

@@NothingSerious...2lad, there's a reason Protestantism shattered into 40,000 pieces. It's built on sand. The Bible changes meaning depending on what way a pastor interpreted it 1,600+ after the early church fathers.
Hi, Father
Thank for your well-balanced presentation. I'm a Secular Franciscan and I love church history, these short videos are ideal for keeping my curiosity at its peak. I am currently reading "What Happened at Vatican II" by John O'Malley. Great book that answers lots of questions. You see, as a lifelong Catholic, Vatican II was and still is confusing to me. Thank you for your clear, concise videos. They really make a difference. Keep them coming.

Dear Father Casey: I sincerely thank you for having reconsidered your initial decision regarding 'Catholicism in Focus'.
I label myself as an agnostic. I've been following your videos since a while, and I have to say I saddened when you told us you wanted to devote your content to more 'pastoral' concerns. I'm one of those who need 'food for Reason' before receiving your points of faith. So... It's really thoughtful from you to have resumed this dimension of your Ministry. God bless you.
God bless you ✝️
Thank you Fr. Casey. Enjoy watching and listening to our church history.
That really held my attention. Thank you, Father. More please.
I’m so glad this series is back! I use a lot of these videos for RCIA, and this topic happens to be one where I feel I need a little help presenting things in a concise way. Thank you Fr. Casey!
Thank you for your presentations, it truly has helped bring me back to my Catholic roots and made a lot of things I convinced myself about the Church were just ignorance and plain wrong. I'm finally beginning to get it. Keep up the good work please.
This is very simple, brief and inspiring Fr. Any new listener Catholic or non Catholic will quickly have the understanding of this point summary presentation. Thanks once again
This is the best way to take the Church teachings across. My request is this- Can you Fr please provide a similar summary talk on the history of the Bible in point presentation by year starting from the first year from which the Catholic Church began to compile and canonise the Bible until the last year when it was finally approved OT 46 books and NT 27 books please. God bless
I am so glad and excited that Catholicism in Focus is back. Please don't go away again.
Wonderful overview, Father. I sent it to a couple people I know who are struggling with their faith. I pray this helps them.

Good video. Any chance you’ll break down each period and do a more in depth video on each of those? Big ask I know but it’s definitely some video content and we all need to learn more of our shared history.
So happy you are back. Great information.
This was so awesome Father Casey! I love our Church!
You idolize your church!
Absolutely excellent overview of major themes in Church history at lightning speed. Thanks so much! Plus, I can replay it at 0.75 speed to absorb it better.
Excellent initial considerations. Good summary and starting point. Vat2 was probably not bad in itself but the Concilium that came after it has been a major blow to catholicism in itself and has caused more damage than is often thought. Thx for the video.
Thank you for your videos. I'm on my way to becoming Catholic, and I find your channel very informative 👍
Nicely done Father! You managed nuance and balance in this overview without falling into partisanship. You indeed hit the highlights without ignoring the lowlights of church history. I love your channel and your style. Can you address some of the church controversies whee 19:13 there was clear evidence of the intervention of the Holy Spirit? I have a candidate in mind for your consideration.
Excellent effort to summarise Church history
Excellent! Thank you for creating a short video with definite depth. I’ll be using this with my middle school students. 🙏
You could probably do some on the Eastern Catholic Churches.

Great and informative video Father Casey! Hope to see you in Anaheim for the RECongress!!! Many blessings!
Thank you for this great introduction! It definitely gave me the starting point I needed to look further into the details of each era.
i love studying history and i am particularly fascinated by our church history. as you were reeling it out i was thinking about the next moment and you said it. i think you did a terrific job in capturing the high points of the growth of the church. the church is not static. it grows and has to grow or it will die. she is an organic encompassing expression of christianity and needs to be nurtured, and prodded but not scorned to trying the best to do the best. many blessings. thank you. fr. casey
That was a quick history as you said it would be. You are an articulate young man and this was very informative. Thank you.
One of your best videos Father! Thanks !

Great episode, Father Casey. You managed to summarize the history of the Church in a beautiful, eloquent and suscint manner! Than you so much for all the time and effort you put I to your ministry. It helps in the growth of faith not just in me but in my young adult sons.
There is no growth in faith. You either have it or you don't.
Would you be able to make a video on what should a Catholic Christian do everyday?. Like praying, worship and stuff like that?
Because I am confused on what to pray honestly. Like video with each day of the week.

@@loremipsum2989 what parts in concrete.
Excellent Introduction, keep it up please.

One of the better sum-ups of catholic history, but I think you glazed over the events of 1054. Considering this was a much larger church divide than the reformation it's a bit important to explain the reason for the divide.

I have a question about FUTURE Church affairs, if you don't mind terribly.
Have you heard anything about when all of the Franciscans in the U.S. will finally unite in one large Province and where the new Headquarters will be located?

Amazing overview. Thank you!
Great video Fr, however, it was Theodosius I who made Christianity the official religion in 380 AD :)
Constantine made it legal
Nicely done. Well said. So what is the responsibility of the Laity in the Church?
Brilliant and exactly what I was looking for to explain how we got from Jesus and the apostles to today. Thank you!!
Thank you.
May you be well.
That was amazing. It was so succinct and well presented.
Yes! I missed these types of videos.
Great video. One correction. Emperor Theodosius established Christianity as the official religion of the empire in 380 AD, not Constantine. 325 AD was the year of the Council of Nicea.
I love church history; studying it played a big part in my coming into the Catholic Church.

Father , I've got a question. It's to do with the infiltration of the evangelical movement into the Catholic Church. I truly don't believe it's entirely based on faith . Love to run some thoughts back and forth.
I like videos like this the history of the church is what got me more connected to my faith…fr Halloway has a very in depth look into history of the church
Hello father, i've been acatholic then agnostic for quite a while, I actually started to miss eucharist catholic mass. I've been to Christian churches because it's "faster". But recently I've started to miss the old church.. I've been raised a catholic and been to church ever since I could remember, was an altar boy and even read a passage. Now that I think back, it was all a blessing. please keep updating on the history both the good and bad, the church IS based on Christ but was run by man, and man is everything BUT perfect. Since watching your content I've start to miss the usual mass that we used to go to. Thanks so much for the content. God Bless
PS: The bible was translated so many times and there are "differences" in translation in the bible, how are we supposed to base our views on that? (sorry for my bad catechesis) I was baptised when I was a baby, and have just revisited catholicism, any reference books would be awesome
The Bible, NKJV. And steer clear of the catholic church. It is antithetical to what is in the Bible.
Very nice summary lesson on Church history.
But bullshit mostly.
Gives me a lot to ponder. Thank you
I do think the crusades were skipped over & had a significance in church & world history deserving of more than a mention.
@@foodforthought8308 Lol 🤣
