Que maravilla la huella que dejó España en América .
Construcciones bellas y funcionales para la gente sencilla.
Recuerdan a las de La Laguna, Islas canarias .

Greg.! if you don't mind my asking, what brought you to Guatemala? ( Antigua ) It looks very peaceful there, a little more crowded though, last time I was there was in 1982, still very pretty though.

@rayochapin - My wife is Guatemalan. I got married there in 1985 and have been visiting several times a year ever since. She finally talked me into building a vacation home in Antigua :)

In the 10 yrs since this was made there have been changes. MOre people can afford cars and motos so the streets are now MUCH more congested with traffic, built for horses and small carriages they were not made with heavy cars in mind. THe streets are now in constant repair... some closed everyday to reset the cobblestones. PArking is a huge problem. EVeryone who lives here has their own secret street ot spot off the beaten path to park and walk in town. Now a sticker to come into, the town and park costs 50. US dollars....more than the tax on our 10 hr old vehicle. There is a daily parking fee rate for casual parking. SAdly the traje...huipiles have been largely replaced with jeans and teeshirts on the young women so it looks less picturesque in terms of the Maya.
STill, it is heaven on earth..the spring climate, the flowers, the beauty...live just outside town bec the town center is all commercial property now rented out for businesses at very high rates. Most colonial houses in the center are never up for sale and cost upwards of one million US dollars if they do. People have thus moved out of the center of town to the outskirts which is where nearly all the locals and expats now live. Land is expensive in this part of Guatemala...Miami prices. There are fewer expats here than in places like San Miguel Allende MX and more of a local feel here..the weather is much better than SMA too. WE were down to those two choices of a retirement area...so glad we came here and got well established in our late 50s.
WE got to know and be friends with some very wealthy, some. middle class and professional, and some lower income Guatemalans. Like all people the world over there are many good people of all classes and some real stinkers, but most are in the middle, just like everywhere else. Guatemalans are more formally polite than other Latinos we have known in MX, the D.R. , PTO Rico....far more formally polite, which we love. But that can be a mask for bad character as well an an indication of good character...something foreigners have to learn.. who can you trust and who not so much. Still, it is a safe area, but you must have home security eg tall walls etc. WE love it or we wouldnt have been here for 20 yrs.
