Fecal Egg Counts: Collecting and Examining Sheep Manure
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- Our sheep breeder, Tess, teaches how to collect manure from sheep and how to examine the manure for parasite eggs. This results are known as the fecal egg count. The fecal egg count is an indicator of the parasite load of the sheep and is used to determine whether intervention is needed.
Oh my gosh! We've been wanting to do this ourselves instead of going to the vet but just didn't know where to start and there are not many "how to" videos on UA-cam that cover this topic. I predict this will become a very popular video for you! Nicely done!
Thanks Troy! Let me know if you guys give it a try. In fact, you should make a video about it!
Not sure if our microscope is good enough... it's the slide we need to get.
Great video. She should make like an apron to go around the sheep to catch the poop. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad you liked it Bob
Thank you. That was another great educational clip 👍
You're welcome :)
Did Daisy recognize you? We hand raised a lamb almost from birth (mother died of bloat) -- who became a prize winning ram. When a neighbor lost his small flock along with most of his other farm animals in a terrible barn fire, my Dad along with many other farmers "loaned" animals and feed/hay to the farmer since he did not have insurance. Dad sent over several pregnant ewes and later in the summer our ram. Our ram never come home again except to service our ewes but he would respond to his name -- Lamb Chop -- when we called him and ate out of our hands. He also walked on a leash without hesitation -- except in the fall lololol
She may have but she didn't seem to care. She was friendly but didn't seem interested. She wasn't with us quite long enough to to bond completely. That was nice of your dad to give Lamb Chop away :)
Great video! (Spent my whole career working in hospital laboratories.) Not sure I would bring my set-up into the kitchen though. Or work bare-handed. Years of training...
Tess did say "wear gloves". It's just sheep manure, though. Not so bad.
I have been researching this! We are definitely wanting to do this ourselves so we don't have to pay a vet to! Thank you for such an informative video! I missed the salt to water ratio for the solution?
Tess didn't mention that in the video...sorry. Here is the formula
1 LB sugar + 350 milliliters salt in 1 liter of water
Great info! I wondered about doing on farm egg counts, and this was great information.
Thanks Virginia. Yeah, it is interesting stuff
Amazing video so much information. Thank you
:) You're welcome!
I'm sure you can put the head gate on the water bowl and just walk away. Chickens aren't dumb when it comes to their needs, they simply tend to need to adjust with changes with their routine ...when they're thirsty enough they'll get over it and use it as intended.
I don't know if Tails can fit. He is huge. I want to make sure he can get his head in there before leaving it on there all the time
feed cedar leaves, it is very cheap deworm, the sheep really love it
Doesn't seem like the most fun job LOL. But it was very interesting. - Mike
I'm glad I didn't have to do the manual extraction
It may be sitting a bit ow on the bowl. They might need a little more head room. At least you have for future needs, glad they stop using it as a spa.
I think it is fine for all the normal sized birds. It's just Tails I'm not sure about. I will keep checking to see. Thanks again Billy!
Great videos but I the loud music is very annoying. Silence would be preferable. However, overall awesome and very helpful video!
Noted!
Wow, Dan! I just wrote a post for Art & Bri about parasites... in humans... check it out...
do you have a link?
So... what did YOU do today?
haha!
one of my goats had 20k count
