We did rotational grazing on the dairy farm i grew up on. We switched to a geared reel for the larger paddock areas. Each crank of the handle turned the reel 3 turns and made setting up the next area go much faster
We have one that listens to the pulses....and GOES for it! She goes in and out this way. I think she just does it to show us she can. She comes to us like, “Hey, just wanted to show you I got out!”
Thanks! My sheep are staying in with poly wire, but the goats not so much. Going to try tape with the goats for more of a visual and put it as low as I can :) Loving your content!
I enjoy your content. Been playing with the idea of adding a few hundred sheep. After looking at your corner insulators I realized your a beginner giving out advice and you need help with building electric fence. Keep on working hard your doing great and killing it on UA-cam. I will make you a electric fence video.
Lol. Those definitely didn’t last long. I replaced them in this video: ua-cam.com/video/adDf7qZlEWM/v-deo.html Thanks for supporting my channel! -the Shepherdess
O’Brien posts are the best. I’ll have to try some polyTape. I’ve generally used PolyBraid or 14 ga. High tensile, Solid aluminum wire. The PolyBraid is easier to wind up. I now use the aluminum wire as a central pasture conduit to tether the PolyBraid for paddocks. (Credit to Perma-Pastures Farm for the tether concept)
I use a plastic reel to hold the tape. I pull it right and use a bungee cord to attach the reel to my existing perimeter fence. Space between posts is about 10ft. Thank you for commenting! -the Shepherdess
Do you ever have issues with dry/sandy soil not conducting well? How long of a grounding rod are you using for a certain length of tape? Have you ever experimented with 'pos/neg' wiring?
Get a good strong stafix charger. Then you are not worried about weed pressure as much during the growing season. Other than that it looks great. Timeless fence has good strong plastic posts I use a lot and Obien step ins. I like polybraid best with the multiple metals for strength and conductivity.
So I just adopted a ram I’ve never had farm animals. I’m just starting a homestead and the pasture that I have is Barbwire so I ended up dividing the pasture and using the poly tape on half of it thinking that that would work and the sheep looked at me, looked at the poly tape and went through the Barbwire fence and of course here I am chasing it for two hours trying to figure out how to catch up so now he’s in my woodshed because I don’t know if I can just do poly tape around the hole perimeter if that would work because if he gets out again, I don’t know if I’ll be able to catch him.
I've got 25 acres in Throckmorton Co. and it's got a lot of brush and weeds. I've cleared about half of that, but there's plenty of grazing. Your country looks so clean and weed free. I was contemplating cover crops vs dorper sheep, and I'm leaning towards the dorper sheep. This spring the place was covered in wild oats, and now tons of rag weed. Do they prefer weeds over grass?
dorpers will eat everything! Grass, shrubs, and weeds. They will take a lot more work than a cover crop, but they should do well at clearing your land. 😄 -the Shepherdess
Getting ready to begin with katahdin sheep. Was going to use Premier One netting to keep them in AND predators OUT. Does this type of fencing keep coyotes out? How do you deal with that? Help
I love your channel. I have 3 bred cows on 25 acres and I'm wondering if I can keep them, and have rotating traps for the sheep. Do I go from 3 to 5 strands?
I'm curious to ask if the plastics in the fencing will break down in freezing temperatures... like plastic wear from temperature changes, etc, cracking? Or will they hold out?
I have American Farm Works 5 mile charger, rated on the front for Sheep, pigs, cows and horse. It is .1 joules. It stops hogs in their tracks, I've seen (well HEARD) it zap them and they won't cross that line for anything. Hope it keeps the sheep in...
Thanks for sharing. How many acres are you using for 26 sheep I believe you said? It looks like you're using guinea hens behind the sheep? Has that helped with the worms?
Love watching your videos. Questions: How to splice tape? Where do I start the fence and end it? I have irregular paddocks. No one shows the connecting of the solar battery, where is the best place for it, and height? I saw your video of retraining your sheep to fencing, now I am trouble finding it. Could you state things covered under the heading please? It would be helpful when searching. I know it is extra work but would be so helpful for total beginners. Thanks and prayers for success!

As far as where to start the fence and end it: I always carry bungee cords with me so that I can hook the electric fence reel to trees, posts, anything to create an end point. 😅 Just be sure the poly tape isn’t touching the tree or it will ground out the power. Thank you so much!! -the Shepherdess
I've been considering getting some Boer goats and running them with some sheep. I'm curious if you have any thoughts on running them together? (good or bad idea?} I don't think I've seen guinnies in your videos before. You raise them too? Enjoying your channel. thanks
One thing that worries me with this type of fencing is predators. Our own dogs (German shepherds) are not trustworthy (yet) around the sheep and I know there are lots of coyotes, wolves, bears and big cats in the area l so I worry about them getting into the sheep corral. Does this electric fencing work against that as well?
@the Shepherdess, I was trying to thank you for posting it but the typos got me. And in addition to lovely sheep, I’ve watched some of your other videos and all the grasses who live on your property are gorgeous!
I WANT TO ESTAR FOR SAYING THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU PLEASE TO SEND ME THE LIST OF MATERIAL NECESARY FOR THE ELECTRY FENCE. THAT IS SOMETHING VERY NICE WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR US THE SMALL FARMS THAT WANT TO GROW SOME SHEEPS
Just a terminology issue. Aluminum wire is fine but it is not 'high tensile'. That term should be reserved for the 12.5 gauge VERY stiff galvanized wire available from most suppliers. It is very difficult (impossible) to handle without the proper 'Spinning Jenny' dispenser. Once you learn a few of the tricks to handle it you have a permanent very strong fence (I have some put up 30 years ago that is still rust free and working great. It is not suitable for temporary cross fencing however because of how difficult it is to move without the dispenser. I enjoy hearing from others about how they make fencing and always learn something. Well done.
It’s to create a powered spot to plug my poly tape into. This way I have a power point no matter what area of the pasture I am on... without moving my charger all over or sinking more than one ground rod. 👍🏻 -the Shepherdess 🐑🌱
Don’t know if you replaced plastic posts yet? Fiberglass does not break down under UV light or heat extremes. Permanent. They also have enough flexibility with rigidity to be.a great farm solution

Maybe it is just the video but in some of the clips it looks like the grass is touching the lowest strand on the Polytape. Does this not ground out the power? That was our biggest struggle when we tried electric fencing before. I want to give it another try but with tape instead of wire this time!
What about predators? We have bears and coyotes as biggest threat… I’ve been bringing them in at night which is .. work. Do you leave them out at night as well? Maybe I just need to be braver.
Girl, I am not an “active” Christian, but I can’t watch one of your video’s without tearing up with pure joy. Love the little scripture bits.

How do you stretch the tape? What holds it at the opposite end of the reels? Whats the spacing between plastic posts?

Have you ever experimented with 'pos/neg' wiring?
Yes! In such cases I will usually place three 6 foot ground rods in a row (5ft apart). I hope this helps!
What time of birds do you keep with your sheep, and are they an additional income stream for the farm?
FYI Also, polyrope with 9 conductor works really really well for me.

We have recently started temporary fencing , and noticed that deer are breaking some step in post , dont know what to do.
Graze the top 1/3 rd of the grass. More nutritious. Feeding high rather than low they will miss the pests
