Sharpening a Spade Bit
Вставка

- In this video, I go through the process of sharpening a spade bit (paddle bit) from very dull to very sharp. I examine the edge with a microscope to judge the sharpness, and highlight a grain direction issue that affects the use of spade bits.
I hope you learn a thing or two from it.

Love your attention to detail
Very helpful video. I bought a set of used spades and want them sharp as possible.
Very helpful explanation of tearout with great animation of the effect.
Nice work !👍
VERY useful, thanks for the tip! I've been looking for a good straightforward video on how to sharpen a spade bit and you've made it
You're welcome!
Geez. I've sharpened spade bits for years. Thought I knew how. Yeah, I got them ~sharper~ but you opened my eyes to what I was missing. Great info! Subscribed after seeing two short videos.
Thanks for the subscription! Glad it helped with sharpening.
Amazing video
This is great I was about throw away a few of these but now I will sharpen, I need these for my teardrop build
Great video. Your visuals really add to it. Thanks for posting.
Liked your video. I recently had to cut 40 one inch holes for a fence we're putting in our front yard. I noticed the tear out, but since the holes and dowels were inside where they couldn't be seen, I ignored them though i wondered. After seeing your video on sharpening spade bit. it made more sense to me. Unfortunately, I have two complete sets of spade bits that need sharpening.
The tearout on your bit is actually due to the knickers not cleanly severing the fibers before the rest of the cutter engages, but sharpening everything certainly handles it.
That's a good point!
thanks for advice. i like it
You're welcome!
Thanks for posting such a brilliant and informative video. Now I know why I'm getting so much tear out on my holes.
You're welcome. The animation took a while to make, but I think it was worth it for the explanation.

Outstanding work process, insight and explanation. It's those little quantum leaps on the road to enlightenment that make all the difference. Thank you!
Thanks! I'm glad it helped.

That was very well made and informative video, thank you for that. I have the feeling that spade bits are a bit underrated because when they are dull they are considered useless and hard to sharpen.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video.
Oh yeah New Sub here
But...I would get a small file instead of a wet slip stone
Nope, not worth the extra time
Thanks, but for me is much cheaper to buy new ones time vise .
